Guideline and policy news
- An RfC proposing an off-wiki LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the Community health initiative's successful grant proposal.
- Some clarifications have been made to the community banning and unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at WP:AN or WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully appealed the sanction to the community.
- An RfC regarding the bot policy has closed with changes to the section describing restrictions on cosmetic changes.
Technical news
- Users will soon be able to blacklist specific users from sending them notifications.
Miscellaneous
- Following the 2017 elections, the new members of the Board of Trustees include Raystorm, Pundit and Doc James. They will serve three-year terms.

- The RFC discussion regarding WP:OUTING and WMF essay about paid editing and outing (see more at the ArbCom noticeboard archives) is now archived. Milieus #3 and #4 received support; so did concrete proposal #1.
Technical news
- Fuzzy search will soon be added to Special:Undelete, allowing administrators to search for deleted page titles with results similar to the search query. You can test this by adding
?fuzzy=1to the URL, as with Special:Undelete?fuzzy=1. Currently the search only finds pages that exactly match the search term. - A new bot will automatically revision delete unused file versions from files in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old.

- A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.
- A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Wikipedia, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
- Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

- It's pretty simple. Someone added the article Michael Yeabsley to Category:Alumni of Queen's College, Cambridge. That category is, and has been since 2010, a redirect to Category:Alumni of Queens' College, Cambridge, so the bot changed the category link to put the article in the correctly spelled category. For reasons of which I am unaware, you then changed it back to the incorrectly spelled category, and so the bot fixed it again. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:04, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

- The issue is that Category:Roman Catholic education was made a redirect to Category:Catholic education. This was done about 9 weeks ago, in this edit by User:Chicbyaccident. As a result, it no longer exists as a separate category. This was not done by the bot. Guideline and policy news
- Following a series of discussions around new pages patrol, the WMF is helping implement a controlled autoconfirmed article creation trial as a research experiment, similar to the one proposed in 2011. You can learn more about the research plan at meta:Research:Autoconfirmed article creation trial. The exact start date of the experiment has yet to be determined.
- A new speedy deletion criterion, regarding articles created as a result undisclosed paid editing, is currently being discussed (permalink).
- An RfC (permalink) is currently open that proposes expanding WP:G13 to include all drafts, even if they weren't submitted through Articles for Creation.
Technical news
- LoginNotify should soon be deployed to the English Wikipedia. This will notify users when there are suspicious login attempts on their account.
- The new version of XTools is nearing an official release. This suite of tools includes administrator statistics, an improved edit counter, among other tools that may benefit administrators. You can report issues on Phabricator and provide general feedback at mw:Talk:XTools.

Disambiguation
When I do categorization tagging, it consists of a batch run in AWB through an autogenerated list of between 600 and 1,500 pages with categorization problems. AWB doesn't offer any way to evaluate a page's edit history at all — in most cases it's simply not possible to assess "there used to be a dab template here but somebody's removed it", except very occasionally in the case of sloppy vandals who left marks right in the body text (e.g. people who substituted a new dab entry into the template brackets, so that the page says {{Zinj, a website that sells mustard}} at the bottom instead of {{dab}}.) If they've removed a dab template without being sloppy about it, however, then it's completely impossible for me to have any way of knowing that or finding it out within AWB — AWB only allows me to evaluate what's in the existing body text, not what was or wasn't there yesterday. - ACTRIAL, a research experiment that restricts article creation to autoconfirmed users, will begin on September 7. It will run for six months. You can learn more about the research specifics at meta:Research:Autoconfirmed article creation trial, while Wikipedia talk:Autoconfirmed article creation trial is probably the best venue for general discussion.
- Following an RfC, WP:G13 speedy deletion criterion now applies to any page in the draftspace that has not been edited in six months. There is a bot-generated report, updated daily, to help identify potentially qualifying drafts that have not been submitted through articles for creation.
Technical news
- You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
- Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
- In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.
Arbitration
- Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.

I completely fixed all links to the "Environment" Disamb page and am wondering why you had to undo my revision
I then looked at your most recent edit to the page and found that you ADDED environment back to the Done page.
Are you trying to steal credit? I see you have a lot of barnstars and appreciation but stealing credit is not the ethical thing to do.
If that is not the case, please respond why you undid my revision and simply did the exact same thing but with your name on it.

- Hello, AmericanAir88. In this edit, you added "Environment (disambiguation)" to the "Done" section, but forgot to remove it from the "To do" section. The script that I use to maintain the list alerts me if the total number of pages on the two lists deviates from 1,000. The simplest way to correct the problem was to undo the erroneous edit. Hi,
Someone recently changed the DVD region redirect pages at Region 1 etc. into disambig pages. As a result, your RussBot is making many edits like this one where it's having all the DVD Region 1, Region 2, redirects point to the same page i.e. the anchor info previously present at the now-disambig pages, i.e. like this is being lost. Can you update RussBot to deal with redirects to page sections so that info isn't lost? And rerun it on any affected pages? —Joeyconnick (talk) 18:52, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

- Following a successful proposal to create it, a new user right called "edit filter helper" is now assignable and revocable by administrators. The right allows non-administrators to view the details of private edit filters, but not to edit them.
- Following a discussion about mass-application of ECP and how the need for logging and other details of an evolving consensus may have been missed by some administrators, a rough guide to extended confirmed protection has been written. This information page describes how the extended-confirmed aspects of the protection policy are currently being applied by administrators.

- You can now search for IP ranges at Special:Contributions. Some log pages and Special:DeletedContributions are not yet supported. Wildcards (e.g. 192.168.0.*) are also not supported, but the popular contribsrange gadget will continue to work.

- Community consultation on the 2017 candidates for CheckUser and Oversight has concluded. The Arbitration Committee will appoint successful candidates by October 11.

About a glitch of your bot
Hi, Russ: in special:diff/804228332 and special:diff/804230113 and the diffs right before these, your bot insists on making a correction that I think unnecessary. - I think that page is extremely clear: "link to the title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that is a redirect." With the emphasis in the original. Why? Because it is very helpful to those editors who are trying to find and fix unintended links to disambiguation pages. - Links to disambiguation pages are of two types. Some, like these hatnotes, are deliberate and correct. The rest appear when an editor intends to link to a specific article such as Ummendorf, Baden-Württemberg but accidentally links to Ummendorf instead. Many of us find and fix such errors. To avoid repeatedly checking the correct links, we mark them by linking through a redirect such as Ummendorf (disambiguation). Ideally, that link should be piped to show the reader the actual title of the disambiguation page: Ummendorf. Because we can't use the | symbol within a template parameter, it has to be entered as Ummendorf (disambiguation){{!}}Ummendorf here. Certes (talk) 10:20, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team is creating an "Interaction Timeline" tool that intends to assist administrators in resolving user conduct disputes. Feedback on the concept may be posted on the talk page.
- A new function is now available to edit filter managers that will make it easier to look for multiple strings containing spoofed text.
Arbitration
- Eligible editors will be invited to submit candidate statements for the 2017 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 12 until November 21. Voting will begin on November 27 and last until December 10.
- Following a request for comment, Ritchie333, Yunshui and Ymblanter will serve as the Electoral Commission for the 2017 ArbCom Elections.
Obituaries
- The Wikipedia community has recently learned that Allen3 (William Allen Peckham) passed away on December 30, 2016, the same day as JohnCD. Allen began editing in 2005 and became an administrator that same year.

A WP:DPL bot idea for the future
As of today, 26 November 2017, WP:TDD Table 1 Column 2 reports 19,493 bad links, and Category:Articles with links needing disambiguation reports 5,939 pages with {{dn}} tags (OC some of those are pages with multiple tags of different dates). The headline numbers in WP:TDD have been taking a serious hammering in the last month or two, and those two numbers are getting closer together. This idea is no way needed yet - but a version of Disambiguation pages with links which excludes pages with dn tags might someday be useful. As I work through Disambiguation pages with links for the 2nd time, I keep coming across dn tags which I had no idea how to resolve the last time round (including some of my own, some with my own hidden puzzlement note) and still don't. If those two headline numbers ever get within 10k of each other, then a WP:DPL bot report such as the one I suggest could save some routine effort.
(When DPL bot was down a month ago, I went back to Articles with links needing disambiguation from 2013, and nailed around 40 of them. A day's work, but worth the effort, even though it didn't exactly dent the headline numbers.) Narky Blert (talk) 03:00, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
- I would actually like to propose that with under 20,000 disambiguation links, we should just {{dn}} tag every disambiguation link in the encyclopedia, or perhaps every disambiguation link that has been there for more than some period of weeks. - @BD2412: has made an interesting suggestion. I'm not sure that I completely agree with it, but I do agree that the Heroic phase of WP:DPL (which was before my time) may be coming to an end. It is worth thinking about, and discussing, the best way to manage a swamp which has been largely but which will never fully be drained. One of my thoughts: add a |failed= numerical parameter to {{dn}} to allow editors to highlight the worst horrors (up it by one if you've given it your best shot and failed). There would obviously need to be safeguards against multiple voting.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, R'n'B. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Guideline and policy news
- Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.
Technical news
- Wikimedians are now invited to vote on the proposals in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey on Meta Wiki until 10 December 2017. In particular, there is a section of the survey regarding new tools for administrators and for anti-harassment.
- A new function is available to edit filter managers which can be used to store matches from regular expressions.
Arbitration
- Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is open until Sunday 23:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC). There are 12 candidates running for 8 vacant seats.
Miscellaneous
- Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
- The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

- The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey results have been posted. The Community Tech team will investigate and address the top ten results.
- The Anti-Harassment Tools team is inviting comments on new blocking tools and improvements to existing blocking tools for development in early 2018. Feedback can be left on the discussion page or by email.

- The approved description of the function is "The bot will identify all category pages that have {{category redirect}} transcluded onto them (source categories). It will determine the target category identified in the template parameter (target category). It will then try to move all pages from the source category to the target category, using the existing Pywikipedia bot category.py." It says "all pages", not "all pages except userpages". I take it that you want your userpage to be in a category that is redirected to a different title for some reason? Made a change to Eric Wood's wiki page in support of him and his family, and it was deleted because it 'lacked substance'. I completely regret my donation to a site that is against family matters
