About Normans... edit

Hi Qualcomm250, concerning the article about Normans, I see you reverted the edits of a sockpuppet and I have no objections about that, but as far as I know Normans are actually considered a people of Germanic origins, please check this for example, wher it says: "The term Normans (latin Normanni) in Middle Ages used for members of Germanic tribes that coming from the “north” especially from Scandinavia...". Cheers and happy editing, --DoebLoggs (talk) 11:30, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @DoebLoggs, and thanks for taking the time to publish this on my talk page.
The source you sent me indeed refers to the "Normans" as Germanic. However, seeing as it also refers to Scandinavians and Varangians as Normans, it would appear that they are using the word Normans to mean Norsemen. Indeed, the two words are etymological twins, however their meanings are rarely synonymous anymore. In most cases, Norman will either refer to an inhabitant of Normandy, or a member of the ethnos that conquered England in 1066, so the amalgamation with the term Norseman is actually quite counterintuitive seeing as Norsemen already have a Wikipedia article.
Going from there, one of the principal sources of the Normans article actually disproves the notion that the Normans should be defined as a Germanic ethnos. "The Normans" by Marjorie Chibnall refers to the Norman people as an "extremely mixed-blooded" group, one that arose from contact between various Germanic and non-Germanic ethne. Add to this the fact that their language belongs to the Romance family of languages, and it becomes absurd to call them a purely Germanic group, because there is no linguistic element. Of course, the Normans are descended from conquering Vikings and this fact should be highlighted, but it shouldn't be overstated because they also are the offsprings of Franks, Gallo-Romans, and Bretons who outnumbered the invading Norsemen from their very arrival. Essentially, the Normans can't be limited to one single ethnolinguistic family, so we should be content with listing their various ancestries without confining them to this one group(which would mean going against the scholarly sources that were used to create the article, anyway).
Cheers, and happy editing to you too. Qualcomm250 (talk) 12:20, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
I got it! Thanks for the explanation. Cheers. --DoebLoggs (talk) 12:40, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
