Sorry, I'm new at editing Wikipedia. But it does say "Some people add information about themselves as well, possibly including contact information (email, instant messaging, etc), a photograph, their real name, their location, information about their areas of expertise and interest, likes and dislikes, homepages, and so forth." under the "What may I have on my user page?" section at [1]. You are quite right. There is no complete consensus in Wikipedia as to just how far users should be allowed to go in providing information about themselves which does not relate directly to Wikipedia. However, I think there is a pretty strong consensus that it is not acceptable to use Wikipedia only for contact purposes, which, at the time when I posted the above comment, was largely the case. Certainly if you go on to become an active Wikipedia editor with significant contributions it is unlikely that anyone will object to including a few personal details on your user page.
