Your questions about copyright edit

Hi! I saw your helpdesk post, where you had many questions about copyright and about reusing content you have found on Wikipedia. First, I would encourage you to read the page I linked in the last sentence as it gives you a LOT of helpful information about reusing content you find here.

  • You addressed your helpdesk post to "you guys that are the founders/co-founders or workers of Wikipedia". I'm not sure if you know this, but Wikipedia is a volunteer-run encyclopedia. So anyone who will be responding to your help desk post is a volunteer. The founder of Wikipedia is Jimbo Wales, but he has no special authority over content reuse.
  • Our text is all licensed under the Wikipedia:Text of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, so as long as you comply with the terms of that license, feel free to reuse the text with no special permission.
  • Many of our images are also available under that same copyright license, but not all. Some are old enough that they are public domain, while others are fully copyrighted and used here under a claim of Fair Use. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information about when and how we use non-free content.
    • In order to determine the copyright status of an image, click on the image, and then click on the button at the bottom to visit its image description page. That page will tell you what copyright license it is being used under and how to reuse it while remaining in compliance. There will be some links at the top of the page that you can click on to see how to reuse it both on Wikipedia and on external websites. Again, so long as you comply with the terms you don't need any special permission.
    • Most of the images you specifically linked and asked about are being used here under a claim of fair use, so Wikipedia does not the authority to grant you permission to reuse them. We can get away with a limited amount of fair use due to our educational purpose. However, as a reuser your ability to reuse that content would depend on the purpose you put it towards and if your use was transformitive in nature. I would recommend you contact a lawyer to help you evaluate your intended use, or reach out to the actual copyright holders.
  • Next, you made some specific suggestions for articles and images you would like to see added. Might I suggest you reach out to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga with your suggestions? They are a group of people interested in improving articles about anime and manga.
  • Lastly, you asked about contacting us on e-mail. There is a volunteer response team that monitors and responds to requests sent to several e-mail addresses.
    • permissions-en@wikimedia.org – handles authorizations to post copyrighted material.
    • info-en-c@wikimedia.org – handles reports that Wikipedia is violating your or someone else's copyright
    • info-en@wikimedia.org – handles all other general inquiries sent in the English language

I hope this has been helpful. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:52, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
