I completely agree. Most people are used to the list article, so it should be very prominent - as you said right near the lede. I don't know the template, so you could change it back. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:44, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: MFR data edit

I really can't figure out that Meteo-France data. I'd guess it would be m/s. MF has the storm type in the data, which goes only up to 4, and 4 is a tropical cyclone (64+ kts). Not sure though. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

So are you thinking the values are in m/s as well as 10-min sustained? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:49, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ugh, I wish I could help more. I don't write in the SHEM too much, and for precisely this reason of difficulties in data. My only thought would be to compare the MF data to what Gary Padgett has - he is a tropical cyclone writer and is reliable enough for us to use (NOAA uses his research). He has reports back to late 1997, but I don't know how much they would help. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:10, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
We don't really have anyone who has worked significantly on SHEM articles. When you say the values seem a bit too high, is that in 10-min? 1-min? Compared to JTWC? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
For some reason I get a vibe that the site used operational data, and perhaps the pressure was revised in post-analysis. The site doesn't look official at all. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:48, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
So does the WMO page confirm the wind speed is in 10-min and in m/s? ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

RSMC Nadi + Tropical Disturbances edit

I thought this might help you i saw it in the Austrlain/Spac Tropical cyclone operational plan a few nights ago about wat a Tropical Disturbance is defined as by Nadi

A Tropical Disturbance is a nonfrontal system of synoptic scale originating over the tropics with persistent enhanced convection and/or some indications of cyclonic wind circulation. Where as a Tropical Depression is defined as a tropical disturbance with a clearly defined cyclonic wind circulation in which the central position can be estimated, and the maximum 10minute average wind speed is less than 34 knots (63 km per hour ie gale force) near the centre. There may be gale force or stronger winds in one or more quadrants but not near the centre.

Hope This helps Jason Rees (talk) 02:01, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Season articles edit

I'm really not sure. I would guess they would have to be done manually. I'm pretty brain-dead when it comes to bots, but I don't think there would be an easy way. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:38, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: EPAC edit

The NHC archives for EPAC go back to 1988, and the first depression in the season was called TD 1E. The 1986 MWR called the second depression TD 2, without the suffix, and I should note that was the EPHC, not the NHC. So I'd guess the letter was added when the NHC took over the EPAC. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:05, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'd guess the CPHC wasn't accurate about that. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:33, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps it'd be best to ask our resident hurricane expert, User:thegreatdr, as he is an actual meteorologist. The reason I bring him up is because he makes those tropical cyclone rainfall maps, and he has a report on ]http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/tropical/rain//td2e1986.html TD 2E from 1986]. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:45, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Order of hatnotes edit

I realize that, and it does add whitespace as a side effect. However, we've gotten yelled at for this in recent FACs, as screen readers begin reading the infobox when ideally they should be reading the hatnote first. (By reading the hatnote, a blind user can hear that there is an article that deals with that particular storm in more detail, so he has the chance to go read it instead of having to hear the infobox and then realizing that he didn't have to hear all of that.) Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 05:10, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

And also on Sandy's talk page when I asked for clarification. The guideline page is rather clear that {{main}}, {{seealso}} and all variants of hatnotes should go before cleanup templates, then infoboxes or images, then the main text of the section. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 05:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, that rule has been there since forever, we just pretty much didn't care about it. The left-and-right thing is for images, which there's no point in doing (as then, having an image underneath a level-3 headline would trigger other accessibility checks, and more headaches.) You can also raise the issue at Wikipedia talk:Accessibility and see what they say there. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 05:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I actually saw that earlier and wonder how I would Webcite that. I tried WebCiting it earlier, but then the site wouldn't load. I tried again just now; if it works it will appear here. The report is large (18.9 MB), and the IMD server is very slow (~5 KB/sec) so it may take a long time. -- RattleMan 21:50, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

1970 hurricane season edit

I tried to use numbers assigned in real-time in the database I have online. I have never thought we should use HURRICANE TEN in the wikipedia articles, because NHC never numbered them either in real-time or after the fact. I feel differently about TD numbers, but they're tricky in the 1970s and 1980s, since they were reassigned after the fact. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:34, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Best track edit

Yea, I think would be a good idea. I did email the agency, and they confirmed all of the winds of the best track were in 1-min, but they might change it to 10-min (since they said on the FAQ that all of the data should be in 10-min). That reminds me - did you assume that data was 1-min or 10-min? Aren't SHEM track maps usually 10-min? We can probably go ahead and make some changes, but we should do a bit of thinking first. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:05, 20 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, the site says the data should be in 10-min, in which case all of the data would change. Apparently, we use JTWC for the track maps, meaning 1-min and it's unofficial. Given that (and I know that someone in the project webcited the 1-min winds), I think it'd be fine to go ahead. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:38, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Non-developing databases edit

The version I threw on the season talk pages were straight from NHC, but they were not sure of the quality of the information. The version on the HPC page has had some quality control. That's what I mean. Thegreatdr (talk) 12:13, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

There were some notable changes with the Atlantic systems, such as with TD8 of 1981, TD1 of 1979, TD12 of 1975, TD8 of 1971, and TD32 of 1969 (there are other changes as well.) Their former tracks took them to the coast, and ended. Most of the changes I made were to include/correct ROCI information for systems within the database for use within the TC rainfall climo, and extend their tracks inland (if possible.) For the years of 1975-1980, I have not yet had a chance to check the map archives either at NHC or the main NOAA library in Maryland to find all the operational TD numbers. There are cases where the operational numbers were not included within the Atlantic reanalysis spreadsheet, so additional searching is required. The operational numbering should lie in the name of the 1968-current "name" slot, if known. Most of the "UNNAMED" TDs were systems they either thought were TDs after the fact (through 1980) or systems whose phase (tropical/subtropical/extratropical) was unclear (1981-1987). The list does not extend past 1987, because all the TDs are already in ATCF or written up as articles online, either individually, or in the Atlantic systems articles from 1989 through 2002. As far as I know, few operational TDs were eliminated after the fact, with none eliminated from 1984 onward. Keep in mind NHC has not focused on maintaining a TD database over the years, which is why there are multiple databases/numbering systems for TDs of years prior to 1988. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:15, 21 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I used TPC surface analyses to extend the track. If you want, you can use their online surface analysis archive as the source, if you're uncomfortable using the HPC track. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:46, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
