Speedy deletion nomination of HiSilicon edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on HiSilicon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. -- Patchy1 00:42, 1 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

CPU cores used in Rockchip RK3288 edit

Hello Popolon. I noticed you deleted all specifications about the RK3288 possibly containing Cortex-A12 cores, and changed everything to Cortex-A17. Thankfully, you did not delete the paragraph about the confusion about which core is used in the RK3288.

I know Rockchip officially claims that the RK3288 contains Cortex-A17 cores, but that does not mean it is actually the truth. In the past, other companies have supplied incorrect information about CPU cores used in a SoC, such as the Actions Semiconductors ATM7029, which contains Cortex-A5 cores, and not Cortex-A9 cores as claimed. So it is not exactly out of the question that Rockchip would not provide completely correct information. In fact, if you read the references in my Rockchip#Inconsistent_information_about_CPU_cores_used_in_RK3288 section carefully, I think it is clear that is not as simple as that it must be a Cortex-A17 just because Rockchip says so in marketing materials. Although the two cores (Cortex-A12 and Cortex-A17) are fairly similar in terms of performance, I think it should still be listed correctly.

In fact, as you can read in the references provided in the section about the CPU core confusion for the RK3288, Rockchip themselves have sometimes admitted or indicated that the core is not a Cortex-A17 or actually a Cortex-A12, but has decided to list Cortex-A17 in the specifications. Cortex-A12 is also a CPU core that is closely tied to Rockchip's chip foundry GlobalFoundries, which is the first foundry to produce the core. In fact, other foundries such as TSMC seem to have virtually skipped the core in favour of Cortex-A17. This provides more evidence that the core is Cortex-A12.

The reference you provided to verify that the RK3288 contains Cortex-A17 cores in fact contains the following text:

CPU-Z has apparently not yet heard about Rockchip RK3288, as it reports a Rockchip RK3066 processor. The CPU architecture is 0xc0d, which stands for ARM Cortex A12, whereas Cortex A17 should be 0xc0e, according to this. So finally Rockchip RK3288 might be a Cortex A12, at least for the first versions.

Clearly, the reference you provided does not verify that the RK3288 contains Cortex-A17 cores, in fact it actually provides evidence that it does contain Cortex-A12 cores.

In conclusion, I don't think it is correct to remove Cortex-A12 as a possible core specification for the RK3288. The possibility of Cortex-A12 should be mentioned (probably as the most likely option, as how it was listed before your modifications).

Thanks. Calamites (talk) 18:33, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I know, I wrote about this at this time, but that was for sure an error, this is definitivly an A17. Rockchip doesn't does SPU but SoC, they mainly integrate some units of ARM, with liberty on SoC part to assemble what ARM gives to their customers. If there is someone to blame for this error, that's ARM. They clearly said that A17 replace the A12, and as that's really more efficient, A12 will never goes out. After most bench, RK3288 outperforms A15 architectures, A12 was less powerfull and more limited in frequency. As far I know Rockchip play fairly in the game, they also make effort for integration in Linux kernel. Only people at the exhibition changed it to A12 after lot oe question, pressure, and before ARM publish A17 specification to public (that don't have NDA). That's not technical staff of Rockchip that said that. Atmel is not Rockchip and Rockchip is not Atmel. Intel lie a lot too, and you could say Intel lie so Rockchip probably lie too, because they work together, that's a totally nonsense.Popolon (talk) 20:03, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the update. However, I think the situation is not exactly the way you portray it. ARM only stopped using the name Cortex-A12 on October 1, 2014. Before that, the proper name for the core was still Cortex-A12, while Rockchip has already used Cortex-A17 in marketing materials since the beginning of 2014 for what actually was a Cortex-A12. It looks like the RK3288 does contain Cortex-A12 cores however the latest revisions of the core now perform close to the level of Cortex-A17 and ARM has decided use the name Cortex-A17 for Cortex-A12. In that sense, it now seems correct that the CPU core for the RK3288 is listed as Cortex-A17 (following ARM).
However, it is still possible that the RK3288 contains not the "latest maintenance version for production" of Cortex-A12, but an earlier version, that possibly does not quite match the performance characteristics of a Cortex-A17. You can't just change a SoC design with the latest version of a core, it normally takes redesign and a fair amount of time.
I will perform a minor clarification of your changes, keeping it largely intact and correcting the grammar. Calamites (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
They advertized A17 because that was in fact A17, ARM only adevertized about A17 few weeks after the show where Rockchip spoken about A17 (and they spoken about A17 in announce before the show). In fact, Nobody made A12 or A17 but Rockchip and Mediatek, both stated to do A12 One year ago and change to A17 at begining of the year... They have to redesign if the interface change, this is probably not the case here, as this is the same core with internal optimizations.Popolon (talk) 19:44, 8 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
