The Chronicles of Narnia copy edit

Hi there - many thanks for taking this on! I realise it's a big article and will take some effort - hopefully it's not too bad to start with. Please do drop me a line if you have any questions. Thanks again! Cheers. -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 22:41, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

No problem. It's an interesting article and I remember enjoying the books as a child. I have done the lead - see what you think. Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 22:52, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Looks good so far. I suppose the old version was a tad link-happy :) My only question is whether we really need to include the dates for "Second World War (1939–1945)" .... is that a generally accepted style point? -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 23:03, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I did that because Wikipedia will be around for ever - in a few hundred years not everyone will know about it. I don't really mind if it comes out. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 23:14, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi again. I noticed that you tagged "or scripts other than English" as an inference .... in fact that comes from one of the citations linked to that statement ... it refers to the fact that the English version is available in braille. Any suggestions on how to fix that up? Thanks. -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 00:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

have a look now ► Philg88 ◄  talk 00:37, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
Looks good! -- Jake fuersturm (talk)

FYI - despite the girlish-sounding name, the character of Eustace Scrubb is a boy :) No worries, I was wondering that the first time I saw the name as well :P -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 00:57, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Oops! ► Philg88 ◄  talk 01:00, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

BTW - in case it comes up again, I've seen that you've made a few edits referencing Narnia as a kingdom. While this is technically true (of the Kingdom of Narnia), the name Narnia also refers to the world in which the stories are set, and there is a subtle but important distinction depending on the specific usage. Thanks! -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 01:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I'll leave it to you to sort that one out when I've finished. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 01:25, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
That's cool. I just wanted you to be aware of it just in case you see that again later on. -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 01:28, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi again. Sorry to keep bugging you, but I didn't want to forget to ask. I just wanted to understand the rationale for using blockquote rather than cquote? Thanks. -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 02:41, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

I prefer cquote as it adds a slight touch of color and spaces things nicely. No problem if you want to revert to blockquote - having just checked that's what the WP:MOS recommends too. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 03:08, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Moved the above conversation to the article's talk page . -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 19:14, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

2010 Copiapó mining accident copy edit

Hi, I wanted to let you know that I left a small thank you note at Talk:2010 Copiapó mining accident#Guild of Copyeditors Review. It was a lengthy task as I watched quietly most of the time but did not want to interrupt or distract you. I think you did a great job. Take care and I hope to see you around the article in the future if you find free time on your hands. Cheers, Veriss (talk) 03:44, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. It was an enjoyable copyedit although it took a while. Let me know if you need help with anything else. Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 03:58, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

RE: Nikolai Ryzhkov

You could begin copyediting the lead, early life and career section, premiership and the recognition section if you want. I'll let you know when I'm finished with the Post-premiership section. Is this acceptable? --TIAYN (talk) 15:26, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm finished... Anyhow, just so you know, I greatly appreciate you copyediting many of my articles, you've done a splendid job! :) --TIAYN (talk) 19:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
I'll start ASAP - I need to finish The Chronicles of Narniafirst - shouldn't be too long now. All the best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 20:35, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Peer Review Requst

Could you please take a look at this article I've been working on and give feed back. I fear that I've been looking at it so long that I'm no longer seeing any errors or style weaknesses.

Hi, if you want a peer review then you need to follow the procedure detailed at WP:PR. I will take a quick look at the article later and leave my comments on your talk page]]. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 07:44, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks

Hi, Philg88. We haven't actually met; I am Dianna, and am one of the coordinators of the GOCE wikiproject. I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much I appreciate your helping with the articles listed on our Requests page. March was the busiest month ever for requests, and your high quality high volume work is certainly appreciated. Thank you very much. See you around! --Diannaa (Talk) 03:25, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

A pleasure to meet you Diannaa and thank you for your kind words. Having been around Wikipedia for a while now, my focus has shifted slightly towards improving the quality of what we already have. Copyediting is a good way to do that and as a published author, I've been doing it for a while outside Wikipedia. If there is anything else I can do to help out with the GOCE, please set me know. See you in cyberspace! All the best ► Philg88 ◄  talk 03:36, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Re: Ibn Battuta

Should I submit it to GA/FA review? I've only done one edit to the article. I mean, I could probably reference the unreferenced information, after you've done you're copyedit, and expan the article a little further.. But that will have to wait, I'll have to find my books first. At the moment, the only books I have any clue were is are the Soviet topics ones.. But, OK, I can help improve the article. Regards. --TIAYN (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Please don't submit it yet, there is a lot of work to do before the article is ready. I've found lots of web sources for expansion/referencing and if you have some books on the subject that's fantastic! Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 19:53, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do. --TIAYN (talk) 17:48, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm impressed with your recent efforts on this article - turning some of my clunky English into flowing text. It is a big improvement.
Although there is some information on the web, much is of low quality. I have a copy of Dunn's book, which I think is excellent, but have to visit a library to access the four volumes of Gibb's translation published by the Hakluyt Society. I've noticed that Gibb's earlier translation (available on the web) missed out random sentences. In the article I've often cited both Dunn and Gibb – to avoid being accused of relying only on primary sources.
I question whether the picture that you've added strengthens the article. We have no idea what Ibn Battuta looked like – there are no portraits. A naive reader may not realise this and believe that the portrait that you have added is actually of Battuta.
I've always felt that it would be an improvement to have separate maps adjacent to each section showing Battuta's route (as in Dudd) but I'm not familiar with map making software and would need to acquired new skills.
I agree that the article is far from the level required for FAC. The standards have become much higher than they once were. Aa77zz (talk) 08:05, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm glad you're pleased with progress on the article. Yes, the picture is a bit naff but most bios have a pic and it looks odd without one in the infobox but can it if you feel so inclined. As for references, as I'm in China I cannot get hold of relevant texts without paying through the nose for freight. Unfortunately that means that I only have access to the lower quality resources on the web. I can do the required map stuff but I'm not quite sure what you want - let me know and I'll cook up the requisite graphic in Photoshop/Illustrator.

Wuzhi sat map

Hello. These coords show Wuzhi City. I am looking for the mountain. Maps for free snapshots (see camera image top left) are usable on wikipedia. I think a good sat or topo map would be an asset. Can you help locate the damn pile or rocks? I can't. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:45, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I emailed you a snapshot of that pile of rocks known as Mount Wuzhi :). Best ► Philg88 ◄  talk 13:54, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Got it and replied. Please take a look at the Hainan article before other members of the public actually read it. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:59, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox reservoir

Hi, thanks for the reservoir infobox, but some of the information are not showing on the infobox. Proof is the example template. Thanks. - Briarfallen (talk) 16:08, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Hm, that's strange. I tested it quite thoroughly and it works OK at Huating Lake. Can you be a bit more specific about what's not showing? ► Philg88 ◄  talk 20:18, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I forgot to leave a link for the Template:Infobox reservoir. If you check the Huating Lake, it does not show some information - location of the reservoir, location of the dam, type of dam, dimensions of the dam, etc. - on the Infobox of Huating Lake but they are on the edit list. - Briarfallen (talk) 17:42, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
OK, I fixed the template. Thanks for spotting the problem. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 07:08, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Request for re-check on the lead at SS Edmund Fitzgerald

I think that the only area where we have changed text is in the lead, and would like to request that you recheck the lead. Thank you again for your help and expertise. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 17:26, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Your recent copy editing of "economy of Iran" - Kind reminder

This is a KIND reminder that your army knife is awaiting an address for the delivery! I think you must be MI6, thus your reluctance to share your physical address. But we will find you! alternatively you can give me the address of your third cousin in the Common Wealth (or just a post office) who will forward it to you after verifying it has no microphone incorporated :D —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.79.125.174 (talk) 17:41, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

He He ... MI6 eh? Nothing of the sort! The problem is that I live in China and they do not allow the import of knives and guns even for personal use. So we're stuck but thanks for the kind offer. All the best. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 20:36, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
OK, as you wish. I'll ask my neighbor in the US who is CIA (I think) or my brother-in-law (who is Swiss secret service) to trace you through Wikipedia (In exchange for me to remain silent about them.)

New stubs and images

Stubs

Hello. Could you please check the names of:

Also, if you have photos from your travels, that would be great.

Leiqiong Global Geopak
Dazhou Island   - More commonly referred to as "Grand Island"
Wuzhizhou Island

Uploads

I now seem to be able to upload to commons. This way saves time otherwise wasted when filling in forms and then getting blocked, plus, it might somehow skirt the great firewall.

  1. Copy the image to a low quality version (around 50kb).
  2. Upload the 50kb version.
  3. Fill in the fields with a bunch of junk characters.
  4. Click upload.
  5. Edit the summary by pasting in the correct info (swiped from a previous upload, etc.).
  6. Save.
  7. Upload full-resolution image as "newer version". (I think I can do images up to 1.5 MB now.)

I am batting 100% using this. Also, not sure if this helps, but I stop all but a little traffic during this. I find that if I am downloading torrents at high kbps rate, the image upload takes too long and the firewall spots it. And, if I'm downloading nothing at the time, the firewall seems to get a clear picture of what I'm doing. It might be that the firewall gets confused by multiple packets going through the line simultaneously, and requires more time to figure out whether or not to block. This is just a guess, but there seems to be a correlation.

Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:03, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the info - very useful. With all the other stuff I'm doing right now I haven't had any dealings with images for a while. Firewalls don't get confused by multiple packets - its what they do best, I'm not sure how the GFC works as unfortunately it's not documented anywhere :) Best, ► Philg88 ◄  talk 03:14, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Sorry bout that section deleting. There are certain blurbs that should be kept and I didn't proofread it thoroughly before making a hasty decision.205.206.8.197 (talk) 07:53, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
