Is this the one? the quarry?

Section Paris - ref? Hafspajen (talk) 15:00, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
I formed that impression but can't find the source now. I will reinstate the section when I have the material to back it up. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:11, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

_--------------------------------- Second thought - Compensation was paid later to the Städel Museum for the Van Gogh and the Folkwang Museum for the Cézanne but at a fraction of the paintings true worth. - Was that the German state or Angerer who payed that compensation? Hafspajen (talk) 21:22, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

My reading of Lindsay is that he paid it personally, if that means anything in reality. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:14, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

OK, I think all looks good. Hafspajen (talk) 23:32, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

I am trying to work out which Daubigny's Garden it was. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:18, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
No luck, it's not clear which one it is. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:36, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
How's the quarry, is it this one? Hafspajen (talk) 01:49, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
I can't be sure about that one either. Cezanne was inclined to paint the same thing over and over again (as I am sure you know). Philafrenzy (talk) 01:53, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
That is very true, I mean he was just crazy about apples and stuff - same apples all the time ...  . Hafspajen (talk) 02:05, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Same mountain all the time! Philafrenzy (talk) 02:13, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Slight lack of fantasy? Or he could't think of turning that easel the other way ... OK, just joking - there was some scientific explanation to go with it - but since he is not my real favorite, don't remember. No, not easy to know which mountain that was ...   Hafspajen (talk) 02:20, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
His easel got stuck in the mud. Then there is this. Philafrenzy (talk) 02:24, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, he is as I remembered him, same mountain and apples, but this girl is a bit of a surprise, not bad, that one, eh? Nah, Monet can paint the same thing over and over and still he is not boring. Hafspajen (talk) 02:28, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Is that a Rubens? Philafrenzy (talk) 02:40, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
A Cezanne... surprise! Hafspajen (talk) 02:41, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Just as well, as I never sent you anything for Christmas. However, I shall have words with the Royal Mail about a special issue to commemorate your 1000th new article. After all, they're doing a whole series for the 175th anniversary of the Penny Black. Edwardx (talk) 21:21, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
They never feature living individuals unfortunately (I have already petitioned them on the matter) unless they are royals or part of a team. Football or, apparently, comedy teams like The Two Ronnies next year according to my paper. That seems to exclude me, I don't know about you. Two to go

998. Still pondering what will be #1000. And I've done my first DYK nom for some time. Of course, all this unpaid work on billionaires means that any chance I might have had of joining them gets ever slimmer. Edwardx (talk) 22:36, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

You still had hopes? I noticed the count. Don't stress it, the count is off anyway so 1000 is probably 998 or 1002. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:43, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I'm quite hopeless. I've probably missed some (it's hard to spot those that one has created in place of redirects) and one of the 998 has been deleted. I've reached as far as #253 in filling in the gaps in the billionaires. What a strange bunch they are. Edwardx (talk) 23:06, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Does money allow billionaires to be strange, or are they billionaires because they are strange? Discuss. I would review your nom but since such things tend to get fractious it may be better not to. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:09, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Chicken and egg, I'd say. Best not review it - hook could be viewed as contentious anyway, especially as it's a BLP. Edwardx (talk) 23:16, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Savile Row

Hi. Thanks for your recent edits; however, per Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, as you have been a little too bold on a stable Good Article, I'm reverting you. The next stage is to discuss your concerns on the talkpage. If you revert back rather than discuss, that may be taken as confrontational editing, so discussion is going to be the most production approach. If we are unable to agree on a solution we can ask for other opinions. I am attempting to take the article to FA. That was stopped last time when your editing made the article unstable. It has been stable since August. I now make some edits in line with advice I have recently received, and you immediately return to the article, and make edits which take it away from guidelines and accepted notions of what make a good article. You have introduced a series of short sub-sections which break up flow. Your contention that the section on tailoring is disproportionate is interesting, and we can talk about that on the talkpage if you like. SilkTork ✔Tea time 11:27, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Replied there. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:45, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
Have also added my views and opinions on that talk page. The SR Tailoring article could be more sectioned, but at the same time it shouldn't advertise any particular business. Thanks for your editing to it, as such.Richard Nowell (talk) 12:26, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, but there is nothing left of my editing! Philafrenzy (talk) 12:45, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure how the article could be divided up. I've started using 'bullet points' next to each name so there is some sense of division- is this what you mean? It's not a very elegant solution.Richard Nowell (talk) 11:22, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Category: Art crime

I added De Benzion to the 'Art crime' category, though I know it is imperfect. What would you call a more appropriate category? 'Victims of Nazi art theft' 'Subjects of Nazi art appropriations'? Help! We need to group your astonishing and vital articles together. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 14:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

As those seeking restitution have discovered, it is all rather murky. Some cases are clear cut expropriation like Benzion, but other collectors sold willingly or were even complicit in the trade. There is every graduation in between. I think art crime should be reserved for cat-burglars, but "Subjects of Nazi art appropriations" sounds good to me. Please create it. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Would the higher cat be art crime? The effects of the Nazis on culture in general are strewn all over Wikipedia. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 16:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Parisiennes in Algerian Costume

Hi again, Philafrenzy. I spotted your new article. This is a very good picture that you were using. The File:Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Parisiennes in Algerian Costume or Harem - Google Art Project.jpg . I think with this excellent article, and the picture has a very good chance for a Wikipedia:Featured picture... I don't want to pinch it because you made all the work, so I noticed the picture, made a nomination and I also put you up as a co-nom. If you want, just Sign:Philafrenzy where it say Philafrenzy and there we go. Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/File:Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Parisiennes in Algerian Costume or Harem - Google Art Project.jpg And if God so will, it will be a featured picture... Hafspajen (talk) 21:05, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, I added my support. I regret that I have not seen the original (in Tokyo!) so I can't speak for the accuracy but it seems a good quality image. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:54, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
It is a Google Art Project file. Should work... most of the time. Here is a rather good explanation in this (video the last part) of what a google file is. Hafspajen (talk) 22:07, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I watched that but I am not sure this file is as high res as suggested by the video. Where are the rules for what should be in the caption? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:34, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
NO rules, just to provide a kind of a description. If you want to change anything, go ahead... it is your nom too. By the way, I think that the jewelry in her hand could be some kind of mascara.  ...Hafspajen (talk) 23:06, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes, probably that or something similar out of a bottle. This is where a really high res image would be useful. I think it was in one of the books I used but I have returned them to the library now. I may get a chance to check. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:22, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
I edited the article accordingly. Interestingly, nobody else mentioned this (probable) error in the article despite the thousands of views it will have had. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:27, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Oh, well, it's probably not in the MOS. Hafspajen (talk) 08:28, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Achille Boitel

Is it wrong to say he was a "French businessman and art looter"? We could remove the latter part from his short description at Achille and Boitel. I may also want to expand his page if you work on it a bit more.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:09, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

I would say he was principally known as a collaborator rather than a looter, as his activities on behalf of the Germans extended into several areas. Also, he was French which is another reason why collaborator seems a better term than looter. I am about to expand it. Anything you can add would be welcome. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:56, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
OK. Did he support Vichy or the Nazis though? It's not the same thing. It sounds like he supported the barbaric Nazi invaders, from reading your article. Yet businessmen often supported Petain as he was seen as a WWI hero and a shield against the communists. I think we would need to have a section about his early life (where was he born/educated), business career (very important I think), perhaps personal life (wife/children), etc. The encyclopedic article needs to recount this man's entire biography. The Lost Masters sounds like an interesting book btw.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:59, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Nazis definitely. I am adding what I have now. Lost Masters is good, and very cheap on Amazon though you do need other sources too in order to do a proper job. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:06, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
OK. Btw, there is another Boitel who was a painter. I wonder if they were related.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:22, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I find it not very encyclopedic when it says, "he is believed to have...". It makes it sound like gossip. Is there a way to rephrase this? Do the sources suggest he might not have done it?Zigzig20s (talk) 21:56, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I have done enough for a DYK nomination and have more to add about specific works of art. Please add anything further that you can. French sources may have more. There is definitely more about aircraft. I have a lead on that already. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:58, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
We have only Wendland's opinion that he worked for the Gestapo. I left it in but removed it from the lead. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:00, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I can't find very much about that bizarre fellow in French, at least not on Google. I tend to shy away from editing controversial topics in general.Zigzig20s (talk) 11:03, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
I wouldn't say he was particularly controversial. If you can add anything at all about his pre WW2 life, it would help. What about Google Books in French? Philafrenzy (talk) 11:13, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
I looked and aside from the extra English reference which I think we should keep, there isn't much in French. Frankly, it is probably censored. It is still very controversial to talk about those topics in France.Zigzig20s (talk) 13:21, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
OK, but he wasn't a collaborator before the war was he? There should be early life and aero industry material out there. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:47, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Ways to improve RMS Duchess of Atholl

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Hi. This could be a good article, but it needs vastly expanding.
