DYK

Is this dyk'able? If so...can you advise and hook it? Whispyhistory (talk) 18:57, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Your current editing worries me. Should I be heading for my secret bunker in New Zealand where I have a year's supply of canned food?
Yes, assuming you expect any survivors. If not, don't bother. 5x from 29th.

Oh...nothing soap and water can't handle. Can you check Anand's book and typhoid in Croydon? Am I requesting too much?Whispyhistory (talk) 20:05, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Have you told the Chinese about this simple remedy? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:07, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Lets say the story is complex... There is a lot more to Lucey...but I have to refrain. Do you remember the Pickles story and the love affair...or snow...all boils down to traditional epidemiology. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:15, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Are you saying it is spread by kissing? Bad news for Chinese romantics. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:22, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
NO...I am pointing out mapping of the disease....but Pickles was a good example...as is the typhoid outbreak of Croydon. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:50, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Susan Sweney

Hi....I was reading O'Donaghue. ref 3 says p 211, but I make it p. 116. Is yours different? Whispyhistory (talk) 14:25, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Which instance of ref 3? Are you reading the dissertation (1995) or the book (2014)? Ref 3 refers to the book. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:53, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
I see...Are they very different? The dissertation is interesting Whispyhistory (talk) 15:02, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
I have only compared as far as Sweney is concerned where the book extends the story a little with new material. The book can be purchased for a few pounds on Amazon (£3.54 plus postage). It is full of good article subjects although I particularly like Sweney because she looks so innocent in the photo and has a great haircut. None of the others are as photogenic. He actually could have gone further on her as since the dissertation her secret file has been released. It is about 130 pages of documents - £3.50 from the National Archives. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:23, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the price list.Whispyhistory (talk) 16:25, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
I thought you had blown all your money here. See p. 215 for the Indian station associated with Bose. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:10, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
P. 215 of the book or the dissertation? Whispyhistory (talk) 19:57, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Dissertation. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:01, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
?...some of this stuff is in Anand's book. However, I am a little tied with learning about water supplies/wells and reservoirs. Whispyhistory (talk) 20:07, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

London medical students

Sorry...been busy and had other things on mind. I think the London students could be a list in another article and I will investigate what happened to them. I don't mind if you move it...but if you want me to...can you watch?

To change topic for a break...can this medical related topic be an article? Whispyhistory (talk) 21:31, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Do you propose to move the table to a separate list article? If so I would be inclined to leave as it won't get any longer? Or will it?
No. Cute animal pairings aren't valid article subjects in their own right unless you have masses of coverage. There may be some sort of zoological article about the phenomenon I suppose. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:43, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Will check coverage...I came across when reading about Karen. The table has 95 names. I'll add to it and see what it looks like. Regarding the category of London medical students who assisted at Belsen, there are a number of other articles that should be linked eg Meiklejohn and Brigadier Glynn-Hughes and others. Does that need another category? Whispyhistory (talk) 07:29, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
See WP:CATV. If you create the category you would need to add that information with a cite to each biography. I created the list. Please fix the cite errors. Philafrenzy (talk) 08:37, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you...I didn't understand the eponymous category, but I'll re-read it. Whispyhistory (talk) 09:13, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
Bit tired of this, although there is so much more to him. Yellow fever, malaria etc need tackling, but maybe enough for now...Can you check please? Whispyhistory (talk) 14:55, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Is there only one of these? Whispyhistory (talk) 16:17, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Sources credit Ulrich Mohr, director of the Institute of Experimental Pathology at Hannover Medical School, as the author of the book on Atlantis but I agree that would make him very long lived and working to a great age. I am going to restrict it to the war part pending more sources. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:30, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
This is great if you have time. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:27, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Should that hook be "in China"? Also, reported by whom? The name seems clunky. Isn't there a new name now? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:24, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Changed to China, thanks. He generally says its global though Prof Neil Ferguson, infectious disease expert from Imperial College London, told the BBC ... "I think we're in the early phases of a global pandemic at the moment," he said. Prof Ferguson added it was likely that only one in three cases coming into the UK was being picked up. [1]. The name appears to have caused a significant debate on W. BTW...what is clunky? Whispyhistory (talk) 08:00, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you Philafrenzy for that very interesting article, and the George W. Christians one too. I actually read quite a bit about the 1930s far-right in the US after that and created a short article for the National Gentile League. It is interesting that these organizations, at that time, had wide national notoriety but they have been forgotten in the Internet. It is nice to see someone scraping some neglected topic areas. One thing that I noticed in most sources was an anti-fascist organization called the Friends of Democracy headed by Leon Milton Birkhead (a stub exists). That was a very high-profile organization that also campaigned against Charles Lindbergh. Sadly, that is redlinked and a modern PAC by Every Voice also uses the FoD name. --Pudeo (talk) 22:07, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you @Pudeo:, there are many interesting articles in this area. Pfaus came from Christians who was on a slide in a lecture I heard. I went through everyone mentioned and he was the only one missing. Both were the same in starting with little more than a name and seeing what you can do with it. I nearly gave up on Pfaus until I realised he had anglicised his name. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:22, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Does a gallery have to be at the bottom of a page or can it be at bottom of section? Whispyhistory (talk) 19:13, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
It can be at the bottom of a section. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:06, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
But please consider WP:IG. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:40, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

For your protection

I tried from above, sideways and at an angle [3]. Whispyhistory (talk) 16:46, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. That hardly seems adequate. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:46, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
But the same as I saw today. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:17, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I made it look as good as possible. It is official [4], [5]. It is to do with whether the official transmission is airborne or by droplet, that is....by simply breathing or by coughing. Another problem is that if it is declared as airborne, everyone will go and buy all the respirator masks and healthcare workers might not get them. It's complex. Whispyhistory (talk) 21:26, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I meant that the equipment didn't seem adequate. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:29, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

How can they think that flimsy material is enough? Philafrenzy (talk) 04:56, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
What is needed is an image of someone in your surgery wearing it. Philafrenzy (talk) 04:58, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Skeleton staff, school closures and childcare, illness, close contacts and isolation.....not many around. Whispyhistory (talk) 05:01, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
There is a bit of a contradiction between all the reasons they think people should stay at home and all the things they think will continue to function - NHS, banks, postal system etc. Philafrenzy (talk) 05:05, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes...confusing...just stay home if can...VERY IMPORTANT....while you are home, can you look at social distancing; the images I added may need tidying. Whispyhistory (talk) 19:44, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, I am. But you can't. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:09, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Albert Flynn

I had occasion yesterday to seek information on the twentieth-century writer Owen Oliver, and came across Albert Flynn, which you single-handedly created in December. It provided extremely helpful background on him and is clearly the most useful piece of writing on him to be found online, so I wanted to thank you for your efforts in creating and writing it. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 13:55, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you @Newyorkbrad: - these forgotten people make some of the most rewarding articles. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:10, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Suzette Davenport

Hey, I noticed you removed the "174 years" bit from the article about Suzette Davenport. Would you consider restoring it? I know it's true that for most of those 174 years it couldn't have happened, but it is still true, and a common fact cited when women are appointed to long-standing roles for the first time. I wouldn't normally ask—it's not that important, after all—except that line is part of my nomination for the page to appear at WP:DYK, and it can't appear there if it's not in the article... Thanks. I replied at DYK. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:23, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Coughs and sneezes

Hi...All ok with you I hope. Thank you for your edits over last few days. I haven't managed to put my mind here, a lot going on. History section of social distancing needs attention when I get round to it. Have had stories like this on my mind. BTW...I noticed this and would have intervened to get it to dyk but no time (last day for nom. today). 1 April dyk's look good...particularly Volkswagen. Stay safe Whispyhistory (talk) 07:29, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

I could do with a plate of that VW product right now. We won't beat this thing with quiche. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:14, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks... will have a look soon. Whispyhistory (talk) 11:59, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

It had some pretty silly editing on the day but she survived. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:48, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Dr John Ellis

Hi, I am trying to create a page for Dr John Ellis (Cambridge Physicist) , director of studies for natural sciences at Gonville and Caius college Cambridge, It is currently pending approval, after being rejected once.

I noticed you created a page for Eugene Terentjev, queen's college director of studies, they are both of a similar standing in the Cambridge physics community, could you please help me get this page approved or give me some advice about this, Thanks, Cambridge tide (talk) 05:20, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

It's a bit out of my area but you need something more to demonstrate that he matters - awards - a very highly cited paper - invented a new technique etc. And that needs to be demonstrated in independent reliable sources. Leave out the anecdotal stuff too. Good luck. Philafrenzy (talk) 07:02, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Much appreciated — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cambridge tide (talkcontribs) 13:49, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

house keeping

The dyk list on my user page is long... Can you or @Redrose64: help?.....Also..not sure where to go with Sheldon. Cuckooing and county lines is something I have been involved with. I find it difficult to engage with those articles without feeling horrified. However, there is a potential to bring it to attention. ?dyk. Whispyhistory (talk) 17:37, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Do you mean the boxes on the right? You can delete them or some of them if you wish. They are entirely optional. I have my doubts about Sheldon, partly based on the tone of this. What about expanding cuckooing 5x if you can face it. It has obvious DYK potential. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:40, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
reasonable...will look. I have been watching cuckooing for a while...the events I go to are frightening. It's very common in South London. PPE is also an issue..did you see the image I posted on commons?Whispyhistory (talk) 20:51, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes 2016 changed to 2021. But aren't they the sort of thing that doesn't degrade very fast? The Americans released millions of out of date ones from their stockpile that had been tested and found to be fine. Isn't the bigger question whether there is enough of it and whether it is adequate protection? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:19, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes...just to think someone relabelled them all. It's not adequate and unlike in the news, it is not wasted. It's an effort to put on and even more effort to take off. lets see. Whispyhistory (talk) 05:43, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
So you are the subject in an experiment in PPE? While I cross the road on seeing another human being. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
We can do several things about the DYK list... you won't like them all.
  1. Make the list collapsed
  2. Move the list from the right-hand side to a section of its own, perhaps between the "DYK reviews" and "Awards" sections. Here, they may be displayed as multiple columns, or side by side (wrapping at the edge of the window)
  3. Move the list to a separate page, called something like User:Whispyhistory/DYKs. Here, they may be displayed as a single column, as multiple columns, or side by side
  4. Reduce the list to the more significant ones - for example, just those with a high pageview count; or just those where you created the page (eliminating those where you expanded somebody else's page)
  5. You stop making DYKs so that the list doesn't grow any more.
--Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:32, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks @Redrose64:...option 1 or 2 sound ok. Definitely not 5. Whispyhistory (talk) 05:43, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
