A question from a newcomer about deletion

Hey Phantomsteve

I recently created a page for Voxnorth that I can see you chose to delete with the argument not notable music group or something like that.

Could you please let me know why you chose to do so, so I can change the article and make sure it won't happen again?

I'm new to this Wikipedia thing, so please tell me if there are any more things I need to be aware of.

I initially deleted it as not notable by mistake, then restored it and correctly deleted it as an expired Proposal for deletion, as there had been no objections to the proposal in 7 days. As I am on my mobile phone, I am logged in using my alternative account so I can't do much (I'll look at this in more detail next week) but you need to show that the band meets the notability guidelines and especially the notability guidelines for bands. The main thing needed is significant coverage in reliable and independent sources, which I didn't find. I'll look at this again next week when I'm back on my own computer rather than my mobile phone, I hope that's OK -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\^{[alternate account of Phantomsteve]} 06:13, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Re-ordering of entries for "Singapore International Energy Week" Wiki entry

Hi Steve, Thanks so much for your help on the "Singapore International Energy Week" Wiki entry over the past couple of months.

I was reading through the web page and was wondering if it would be possible to re-order the entries and place the 2010 write-up as the first one after the main intro paragraph of the Singapore International Energy Week. (i.e it will go 2010 -> 2009-> 2008)

Thought I'd get your thoughts on this before re-ordering the entries in the "edit" page. :)

I think as a rule, there kind of things are listed from earliest to latest - if a reader wants to look at the latest event, they can jump straight to it by using the Table of Contents. As I'm away from my computer until Monday, and am using my mobile phone, I'm limited in what I can do. As a postscript, I can't think of a reason to list the events in the order you suggest. If this was an advert for the event, you'd list it in your order, but Wikipedia isn't an advertising venue! Sekute

Thanks for contacting me. Firstly, the text on the deleted Sekute appeared to be a direct copy (with a few minor alterations) from that blog (the entry for 16 October 2009, to be precise). The blog clearly states "© KORPORATE KUTIE 2009. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED." - which was the reason for the deletion, as Wikipedia cannot use copyrighted material.

It is a neologism, as the only people who use the phrase is the company themselves - I can't find any mention of the word "sekute" in connection with this topic - so there is no indication that the phrase is in common use.

From your user name, you would appear to be using an account on behalf of the company - which is against policy, as each account should be for one individual only. Also, Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion. Although many companies and organisations have articles on Wikipedia, they meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines (and Wikipedia's notability guidelines for companies and organisations) - and this is demonstrated by the use of reliable and independent sources verifying the information. I can see no indication that Korporate Kutie meet the notability guidelines, nor does 'Sekute'. Danny Eason

The reason for deleting the article was that it had been proposed for deletion for 7 days without objection. The reason for the proposed deletion was I can find no evidence that the article's subject meets WP:BIO inclusion criteria. - basically, the proposer did not find significant coverage of Eason in reliable and independent sources, and so the article did not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for biographies (WP:BIO). While the work which Eason does may be noble, that does not always equate as notable according to Wikipedia's guidelines! There is also the fact that the article has been unreferenced since 2007 - and in the case of biographical articles, we try even harder to make sure that they are referenced, as it's the only way in which the information can be verified by other people. I did a search for information in independent sources, and didn't find any - apart from a mention in the NYT in a long list of people performing at festivals (9 May 1999) - in this case, Karen Clark-Sheard, Danny Eason and the Abundant Life Youth Choir (July 24) is the entire mention, which would not count as 'significant coverage', as I'm sure you'll agree - and in Newsday (23 May 1999), similarly a minor mention, as well as other similar mentions. I could not find anything which said more than the mention of the choir appearing at a festival (one in 1999, one in 2007, one in 2008).

Without significant coverage of Eason, he does not meet the criteria for inclusion in Wikipedia at this time. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 20:28, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Alpha Data Parallel Systems deletion

There are obviously many more articles than those I listed – for example searching for “Alpha Data” + FPGA in Google Scholar returns 333 hits.

I have to say that I disagree that Alpha Data is not a notable company, they are preeminent in the field of FPGA computing and have been pivotal in the development of three of the world’s largest FPGA computers (Maxwell, Hydra and Imperial College’s Ariel). With Moore's Law no longer applicable for von-Neuman processors, new architectures and in particular FPGAs are expected to fill the void. Alpha Data have a significant track record in this field with a number of high profile projects and has twice been named to The Sunday Times Tech Track 100.

I wanted to create the account, I just wanted to tell the user that there might be "mistaken identity" issues in the future. That they might want to choose a different name. In that case, it's easiest just to use the standard message! However, in this particular case, the guidelines (see Wikipedia:Request an account/Guide#If the account is too similar ("Flagged user needed")) say that it could be created. It's one of the hardest aspects of ACC to get used to - my first two creations/denial of creations were wrong, and they were both over the "similar" issue! I'm toying with undoing Realworld's edits and then full protection while they discuss it further on the talk page - Realworld doesn't seem to be in accordance with the concensus.
