WikiProject Jewish culture

Hi ParkerHiggins/Archive 1, I was wondering whether you were interested in joining and developing a new WikiProject. While the more-established WikiProject Judaism focuses on relgious aspects of Judaism, this project intends to look at Jewish literature, music, theater, language and history, among other aspects of culture. If you are interested in helping to edit and review these articles, please join! jnothman talk 06:06, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello again

Just a note. You just fixed my botched entry on polyphonic songs. Thanks again. I see you put up something on Bruce Fowler. Great trombone player. I play(ed) trombone and have put up something on the Swedish jazz trombonist Eje Thelin. I played in his band for a few years. I am from Los Angeles and went to Venice High School. Jeffmatt

musical mark-up

Hello, again. I notice on the page dedicated to musical mark-up, they have--in reference to the current state of affairs in muscal notation for Wikipedia:

"Where used, a score fragment is prepared using one or another of the tools (Sibelius and Lilypond being most common among Wikipedians). The tool is used to generate a PNG file, which is uploaded to Wikipedia and embedded in the article."

Well, I am playing with LilyPond, but I can already generate PNG files from a screen save. I can layout the music in an easy to use graphic user interface program such as PrintMusic, screen-save, and save as .jpg or PNG. Is there anything wrong with that--other than that it is much heavier than LilyPond? Jeffmatt

it worked!

see Play a Simple Melody

The procedure is pretty straightforward. Unless Wikipedia starts insisting on LilyPond-like keyboard entries (which are great if you take the time to learn them), I think uploading PNG files is fine. Do the music in any program such as Print Music---I'm sure you know more about this than I do (when I was young, we chiseled music onto cave walls--the beginnings of Rock!); then do a screen-save; open that file in a photo editor such as Photo Shop (not even necessary--even the scaled down Home Super Friendly Idiot Proof version will do); cut it to about 500 pixels wide; save it as PNG, then upload that via the standard Wiki ritual for uploading a graphic file. It's a small file, too. 14 K.

It doesn't look half-bad. The disadvantage is that it can't be changed without going through the whole routine again. With LilyPond, you could just edit the text that is behind the display.

Maybe I'll try that other tune today or tomorrow.

(Later. I just did the other one. Looks ok. See You're Just in Love.

Thanks for letting me know, there are so many articles up for speedy right now, that checking for a talkpage occasionally slips my mind. Thank again! -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 08:55, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you

Hi there! You are the first Wikipedian in ages to help archive the reference desk! Here's a nice WikiThanks for your efforts. I could not figure out where you placed the December 10-12 questions, so I went back into the history to rearchive them. The questions are no longer being sorted because there are simply too many of them. See you around :-) --HappyCamper 23:38, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I've been looking after the reference desk since May 2005 and it's perhaps the most relaxing maintenance thing one can do on Wikipedia. I love the reference desk - it's the one place on Wikipedia where the atmosphere is always relaxed, the page is rarely vandalised, and there is very little WikiPolitics to have to manage or worry about. It's sort of funny...there used to be such a ruckus when 50+ questions in total are active - now, we regularly have at least 8 times that quantity!
There were a few times where I couldn't save the archives as well, so not to worry. The archives are not monitored very closely. As a general rule, just archive whenever you feel like it - I usually do it whenever the page is long, and I try to keep at most 5-7 days worth of active questions on each desk. If I expect to be away from Wikipedia for longer periods, I archive more aggressively, perhaps leaving only 3-4 days worth of questions on each desk. Hope this helps. I'll see you around! --HappyCamper 23:58, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Hey-

If you look at the discussion I listed that I made updates to the Parker High School enrollment numbers. I also updated some other information including fixing the page when it was vandalized. Let me know what the problem is as I'm a newbie.

Proposed deletion of Simon Dawes

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Simon Dawes, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Insufficient notability and unreferenced. Also poor tone and digressions into trivia.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Proposed deletion of The Cork Soakers

The article The Cork Soakers has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

NN one-shot SNL sketch that seems to have gone mostly unnoticed; no sign of controversy, less than a half-dozen relevant hits on Google News (all routine reviews of the episode in which it aired); Google web hits appear to be mostly Wikipedia mirrors, YouTube links, and linsk to SNL transcripts. Fails the GNG.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
