A question regarding image upload

Hey Pamri. I recently got permission to use an image on Jagjivan Ram, which I have already added to the article. The email I got from the webmaster is on the picture page. Do you think it is okay to have that picture on Wikimedia commons, or should it be only be uploaded on wikipedia? Thanks. deeptrivia (talk) 15:07, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Cleanup tag on Taj article

Hi Pamri: I don't agree with your cleanup tag on the Taj article. I may be more conservative than you in this regard. You tagged the Jama Masjid as a cleanup, and I agree that seems the level of messiness that deserves a cleanup tag. The Taj article, by contrast, is a rough around the edges, but doesn't deserve the cleanup tag. I would be pleased if you would reconsider the tag.

90% of the editing on the Taj article is dealing with wholesale changes made by proponents of the pseudo-science theories of PN Oak. If there were some way to slow that down, I think the article would slowly improve.

Thanks for including me with the information on India contributions. I am fairly expert in a very limited area: Aurangzeb, Shivaji, and their times and locations. The rest of India is a delightful mystery to me.

Hi Pamri, was just viewing your deleted edits yesterday on Kate's archived contributions tool and found that you've been adding CSD tags to images and articles. It is unnecessary as you are an admin; akin to "shoot-at-sight," we can "delete-at-sight" all the entries that qualify for WP:CSD. refining new goals

who defines the Top level priority? looking at the history, it seems that you play a part. india's featured articles seem a little dry at the moment. there is a distinct lack of articles related to contemporary indian culture. what is there to show that india's culture is alive & kicking as opposed to stale & dead? even the page on mumbai shows little evidence of living culture. why isn't bollywood a Top level priority? i'd like the world to know more about modern india. for balance perhaps top priority show go to articles about; 'the changing attitudes to sex in india'. other Regional notice boards are more balanced. the irish are working on Father_Ted. the japanese on Education_in_Japan. U.S._Southern on Hurricane_Camille etc. what we need are more FAs that that would make an interesting Today's featured article. surely Top level priority should goto more articles with worldwide popular appeal to balance all the dry articles? Kannada WP

Hi Pamri, I don't know if you can help me -- I have translated a page into Kannada using "Baraha", but I find that when I "export" it to a text document, what obtains is computer-generated gibberish. I am able to read the script on the Kannada WP perfectly, so I don't think the problem is with enabling my computer. Can you advice? ImpuMozhi 02:44, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Issue!!

Hi Pamri, sorry to disturb you again -- my very first contribution to Kannada WP appears to have thrown me into an issue, although great cordiality exists: please view this exchange. In this connection:

• The link to 'Vishveshwaraya tech univ' shows only the English spelling of the great man's name; how does the good Mr.Chandrakanth conclude that it is to be transliterated "Raaya"? I can think of half-a-dozen other pronounciations that fit the English spelling.
• This name can atleast be pronounced "Vishveshwa-raaya"; what about the MILLIONS of normal south Indian names like Ramaiah, Krishnaiah, Venkaiah?? Surely "Ayya" is a pervasive name-ending of only a generation ago? What is the connection with "Raaya"?
• It is unbelievable that a person who reads/writes Kannada much better than me can fall into such an error -- what is the POV here that I am missing? Can you, Pamri, tell me in straight terms what it can be?

I am actually hoping that you can take up the matter and clear it; my written Kannada (speed, speed, speed!!) is just good enough for slowly composing essays, not for an argument. Can you please do it? Thanx and sorry for imposing, ImpuMozhi 05:54, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Hindu-Arabic numerals

Hi! User:RN moved the article to Arabic numerals despite 28 votes favoring the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals" and only 17 favoring "Arabic numerals." He argues that if we don't count voters with less that 150 (or sth like that) edits, only 56% voters "support changing the title to Hindu-Arabic numerals", while at least 60% support votes are required. However, it was agreed between all parties in the beginning of the vote that the proposal is to move the article to "Arabic numerals" from "Hindu-Arabic numerals." It was also agreed (though I thought it was very unfair) that:

• Those opposing the move have the advantage that it won't be moved unless there's a 60% majority
• Those supporting the move have the advantage that the person proposing the move can do the *short* opening statement.
• For all the rest of the voting procedure both parties are equal. (quoting Francis Schonken from 21:04, 18 December 2005 (UTC))

I would definitely have preferred it the other way round, since I think an opening statement makes a HUGE difference, since many people just read the opening statement and understandably don't bother with the discussion below the votes. The present situation was accepted with the agreement that the article will be moved to "Arabic numerals" only if more than 60% voters favored that title. Thus, only 40% oppose votes were sufficient to retain the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals." In the present situation (with over 60% voters opposing the change), I find the move to "Arabic numerals" ridiculous, besides being completely unjust and unfair. I was shocked at the IISc shootout and barely managed to add a section to the IISc page; good to see you start an article on the issue which is currently on the WP:ITN on mainpage. I despaired when there was no article on Operation Duryodhan as well, but as I have been busy and would be busy for the next two months, I couldn't start it. Wish you a happy new year. Thanks for your note. Actually, I had created a page on the IISC shooting. When I came back in the morning, it was moved uncerimoniously without the required 'consensus' having being created.

I was unhappy about the manner in which it was done. I may not be an admin like you but have been here long enough to note that it was rather an unusual departure from wikipedia's normally courteous way of doing things. You could look at 2005 terrorist attack on iisc bangalore and it's history.

I still maintain that "2005 IISC Bangalore shooting" is a better title for this article, more in line with other articles in the current events category. Not everyone knows what IISC is, though many would know there has been some shooting in Bangalore and would like to know more.

I know the rules about the edit summary. I should use it more often, though I am sure you realize I am no vandal, based on looking at my contributions to wikipedia. Though, they may not match yours of course. Hope 2006 is a cheerful year for you. Manik Raina 11:31, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

My dear Pamri, I take much cheer at your reply. In truth I have come to love wikipedia and spend much time decorating the pages I create, especially on Error correction theory. I am sure you too see such sentiment in yourself. I accept some serious shortcomings in my actions including the rather silly copy paste job, which I assure you was done in the clumsiness of haste rather than with any malice. Some ethnic cleansing also going on - I mentioned this to a few of my correspondents and also on the discussion pages. Very strange. This man is Indian origin you will recall. A Kannada chauvinist seems to be bent on adding POV to Krishnadevaraya with edits to the effect that Telugu would not have survived but for his patronage etc. He is using derogatory terms for Telugus on the page. LOOK!! like i've explained before somewhere else, am new here. there are a few things every newcomer takes some time to learn. the only thing i will ever own up as having done wrong is using the word goltis. other than that the other thing i did was revert some posts repeatedly - that too only on a couple of occasions - and that was because i wasnt aware of the talk page and how it worked.

once i discovered the talk page, (soon after some gurubrahma asked me to discuss on the talk page), i've been using it. i've used it extensively in my contribs on tamil lang and bharatanatya. not very long after i started doing that, i realised that the talk page was actually a joke, meant only to be used by veterans here to bully newcomers and obfuscate things.

my concern that i raised in the bharatnatya talk page hasnt been responded to yet. at the same time, cirba has gone ahead with his blatantly biased and cooked up stories in the article page.

now that i have done some reading here...i would like YOU to lookup wiki's policies about how to treat newcomers...and also read carefully as to what does NOT constitute vandalism.

as for all the links you have mentioned below, i have realised it is you guys who have more use for them. so i suggest you go through those links again.

if you have anything to tell me, respond to the points i have raised in the talk pages of various articles i've edited. that would be a more constructive use of your time and my time, than spamming my user talk page.

so next time you have anything to say, it better be in response to any concerns i raise in a talk page of some article. if you cant do that, stay away and keep your self righteous attitude to yourself.
