The bare minimum for something to be recorded in Wikipedia is verifiability - it must have been recorded by the press, in a journal, in a book or some other reliable source first. If something was "common knowledge" for 20 years but we can't find a single printed source that ever remarked upon it, then the conclusion is that it isn't encyclopaedia material. This rule does risk losing some interesting minor facts, but drawing the line elsewhere ("if someone thinks it's 'common knowledge' and enough other people agree, then we'll include it") would lead to a very different - and probably quite self-contradictory and libellous - set of encyclopaedia articles! --McGeddon (talk) 09:04, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
