Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Jim W Bowman edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Jim W Bowman requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.ontarioca.gov/public-officials/jim-w-bowman. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Chaffey High School Edit edit

Hello Ontiger, Thank you for taking the time to leave a message on my talk page.

I understand your feelings regarding the importance of Jim Bowman. Wikipedia works on a consensus basis. Learning how the Wikipedia policies and guidelines differ from our personal view of how things should work can be disconcerting. The criteria we use for notability here in Wikipedia is different from what you might expect. You can examine the notability guidelines that apply at WP:BIO and WP:N. Simply put the requirement is significant coverage published by multiple independent sources.

The two requirements to be included in the list of notable alumni are (1) meeting a Wikipedia notability criteria and (2) having attended the school. Before adding a name to a list of notable people we suggest first writing a biography article for them. The existence of a biography article in this Wikipedia implies they are notable. Then all that is needed is a reliable source that confirms they should be a member - in this case confirming they attended Chaffey High School.

Because Jim Bowman does not have a biography in this Wikipedia his notability is in doubt. The reference provided contained only a brief mention of him and did not confirm that he attended Chaffey. Because the two requirements had not been met I removed his name.

I see that you are working on a draft biography for Bowman. The reference you've added does confirm he attended Chaffey. If the article is accepted then there will be no problem adding his name again to the school notable alumni list.

You may find it difficult to satisfy the notability criteria. The source used in the draft is not independent because it's a publication of an organization Bowman is a member of. In fact it's likely that he wrote the content himself. Look for significant coverage in newspapers, magazines or books.

Wikipedia does not allow us the cut and paste copyrighted material into our articles. See WP:COPYVIO. It appears that the entire draft is copied from the ontarioca.gov source. You need to remove that and write the article in your own words.

Writing articles is not easy. If I can be of help let me know. I've found the Teahouse is usually quick to provide helpful advice . Gab4gab (talk) 09:05, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
