Dear OlEnglish,

We have a lot in common, after all this time.......

St James' Church of Spanish Place in London is particularly renown for offering the Traditional Mass....

I am glad that Athanasius of Alexandria Page is of a good rating...

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

  Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

  • A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.

If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
  • In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Jamie Bacon, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Help authoring my first wiki page Nick Boariu 05:52, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi!

My name is Nick and I'm from Richmond, British Columbia. I'm working on authoring my first wikipedia page and was hoping I could get your help to make sure it follows the wikipedia guidelines.

The page is about a cryptocurrency project that I volunteer with. It's difficult to find verifiable sources but I've done my best. Could you take a look and send me some feedback? It's currently in my sandbox.

Many thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickboariu (talkcontribs) 05:52, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

@Nickboariu: Hey Nick! Welcome! Richmond is a beautiful city isn't it? Been there many times. :D
The article Decred is looking good! I think you're off to a very good start. Yes, I can appreciate the difficulty in finding reliable secondary sources, but I do see you managed to find a couple.. the Chicago Tribune one is a good example. The article could use some touch-ups as per the manual of style but all that is just the trimmings, it looks like the meat of it is all there already. I don't do much article writing these days, so unfortunately I probably won't be of much help, but do let me know if you need help moving it into mainspace or any other technical/maintenance issues/questions you come across. I really hope you decide to stick around and contribute long-term! -- œ 01:43, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
Hello again!
I've spent some time refining the article, finding better sources, and on the style. I think it's ready to be moved into mainspace. Could you please have another look over the article? What are the next steps to move it to the mainspace?
Many thanks! --Nick (talk) 19:31, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
@OlEnglish: Hello! I've managed to move the page from my sandbox. So far, it's looking good. Would love your feedback if you have time. Cheers! --Nick (talk) 17:30, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
I see you've made some improvements! nice :) I like the charts and diagrams. Also, thank you for declaring on the talk page. -- œ 03:22, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hi OlEnglish, since you seem experienced on this topic, do you think a list of medieval cryptographers would be good article addition? Athanasius Kircher, John Dee, Al-Kindi, Giovanni Fontana (engineer), Johannes Trithemius etc. Or may be a broader scope (not just a list)? There is this rather modern article History of cryptography, and a technical article Classical cipher - prokaryotes (talk) 19:49, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

Hehe, I wouldn't say I'm "experienced" really.. I just happen to find the topic interesting to read about. Yes I do think List of medieval cryptographers would benefit Wikipedia if that red link turned blue! List of cryptographers#Pre twentieth century has some good information and could potentially be a good starting point.. just split out that section then expand with more detail perhaps? Then maybe add a few pictures and other data like birth/death dates and you've got the makings of a future WP:FL! ;) Or maybe even a WP:Featured topic could be something worth considering? -- œ 03:12, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Kircher and Dee are scarcely mediaeval; even Trithemius is on the late side for that time period. “Mediaeval, Renaissance and Enlightenment cryptographers“ would probably cover all the above, but it’s pretty awkward.—Odysseus1479 04:12, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, but I stick with the list of cryptographers for now. prokaryotes (talk) 07:15, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

  Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

So you see even Charles was looking for a reliable source :-) Thank you for your contributions to the 'pedia. ~ MarnetteD|Talk 23:33, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
