I'm using one of your images for the article Lepidoptera morphology. Here is some of the text I've added :

The structural colour seen is dependent upon the angle of view. For example in Morpho cypris, the colour from the front is a bright blue but when seen from a angle changes very quickly to black.

To show the effects of structural colour, I wonder if it would be possible to get an image of the same specimen from the side showing the colour change?

Hello Robert! I would love to do the merge, but I have no idea how to do that.. I'm not that good with common. I would suggest to ask user Rocket000, but he seems to be inactive at the moment. Maybe ask someone at the commons help-desk? Take your time with the moths of Italy, I am working on List of moths of Australia at the moment. The list is done, but I'm making species pages. When you start with the list for Italy, you might want to use Fauna Europeae as a source, you can download a list of the Lepidoptera of every European country by family on their site. I did watch the match off course (I'm Dutch). Shame we didn't make it, but the Spanish were a lot better indeed. Anyway, those scans of Butterflies of Ceylon look amazing indeed! We would need to extract the individual species images over time I guess, but they are very nice and would be a great addition for articles we might have on these species! Many thanks for uploading them! Are these your own collection? I am only working on Lepidoptera in the digital world, so sadly I cant contribute images of my own. I think I couldn't bring myself to kill them in order to mount them, I'm too soft-hearted for that.. :) Yeah, we could use some help from museums. I am still hoping on a commons partnership with a museum. If the British Museum would be willing to donate images of their Lep species we would have an image of just about every species in the world. I wouldn't know how to pursue something like that though. Oh, and everything in RL has worked out fine luckily. About shore-flies: may help me?

Hi Robert, i'm trying for a month to rebuild the taxonomic tree of shore-flies with the revisions in last 10 years, but it's very difficult: I cannot access to most recent works of Mathis or Zatwarnicki and many data in the databases online are ambiguous, specially the BioSystematic Database of World Diptera that reports - about Ephydridae - last changes (also 2010) but also obsolete names or errors. But it's difficult to joint the palaearctic checklists (specially Fauna Europaea) with the Nearctic or other checklists, which often are incomplete or not updated. So, the BDWD reports as valid name the genus Pelignellus Sturtevant & Wheeler, 1954 with two species:

• P. subnudus Sturtevant & Wheeler, 1954 (NE)
• P. lituscolus Miyagi, 1977 (eastern PA)

So, I read (but I don't remember where) that the type-species of Pelignellus was moved to Atissa Haliday. In some websites Atissa subnudus is reported by some american catalogues online, p.a. discoverlife.org and nearctica.com, but other, p.a. catalogueoflife.org, report Pelignellus with the two species. In the Manual of Palaearctic Diptera, Pelignellus is not reported. An unknown (for me) work the abstract reports Pelignellus is synonymized with Atissa. I read this here, a webpage that chains fragments of abstracts of several articles, but I didn't find what article. I've not found references online to P. lituscolus or Atissa lituscolus, but there is a old work of Zatwarnicki (Zatwarnicki, T. (1991), Changes in nomenclature and synonymies of some genera and species of Ephydridae. (Diptera). Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift, 38: 295–333) which cites P. lituscola Miyagi, 1977). I know only the abstract of this article.

I think that Pelignellus was synonymized by Mathis or Zatwarnicki during the 90 years (so, it isn't mentioned in the Manual of Palaearctc Diptera). Can you confirm if Pelignellus whas synonymized Atissa? I'm going crazy!!!! :D greetings --gian_d (talk) 03:46, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Robert, I resolved. I sent a request also to Tadeusz Zatwarnicki and he confirmed that Pelignellus was synonymized with Atissa by him and Mathis in 1990. Johan de la Faille(1626- 1713) was a Dutch collector. He was a bailiff in Delft 1680-1713.Very little is known of his life but he visited France and Italy (1667). Johan de la Faille was the owner of a nationally famous collection which was started by his grandfather and father, of sea shells,birds, Roman coins and medals , porcelain and tapestries and a collection of paintings. Diopsidae etc

Hi Robert, this might interest you. The identity of a photograph that I uploaded to commons has finally been settled - as Teleopsis sykesii - and is used in Feijen, H.R. & Feijen, C. (2011-04-29). "On the biogeographic range of the genus Teleopsis Rondani (Diptera: Diopsidae), with redescription of Teleopsis sykesii from India and description of a new species from Borneo. Zool. Med. Leiden 85 (6):141-159". Zoologische Mededelingen - and Frederic Moore's 10 volume Lepidoptera Indica now online thank to the Biodiversity Heritage Library. Lots of work to be done, so little time ! Please go ahead and add/remove species if you feel your source is better than Fauna Europaea. I just used their list as a source without further question. The site is managed by scientists, but is not specialised in Lepidoptera, so they might have missed some records. Maybe they did not added new records from your source yet. Cheers! You might consider including a taxonomy section if sources disagree and explain that it is treated as a synonym or subspecies of species X by other authors? Great that you are diving into the subject! You might want to check wikispecies ([4]) Their taxonomy seems to be based on various sources, including articles from 2004, 2007 and 2010 so it might be pretty up to date? That is very interesting.Most of what I know about Loew I discovered during research into the Irish entomologist Haliday [5] If you go to this page and then to Wikisource you will find letters fom AHH to Loew -direct link is [6].I have access to photocopies of letters from Loew to AHH but do not read German and they are of course handwritten.They are not, therefore translated which would be very interesting.I can, I hope, provide copies. The Naturkunde museum in Berlin holds the Loew collection and some documents but I do not know if letters are included.I have never written to the museum or archive in Mesritz [7] also a possible source. Hi Robert. I recently received a photo of a Euchirine from northeast India (Nagaland) and I was able to identify it as Cheirotonus macleayi. The image that you have at File:Cheirotonus_macleayiMale.JPG seems however to be C. gestroi ? Any chance of finding the locality information for this specimen. See also this page. Irish marine molluscs

Hello Notafly. Nice to "see" you again. Yes, I do remember talking to you before. As for the idea of an article about Irish marine mollusks, on the gastropod project we had a discussion about this general idea a few years ago, and I think we decided that the smart thing to do was to make an article that lists "North Atlantic marine Mollusca", "Mediterranean marine Mollusca" and so on by faunal zone rather than having a different species list for every single country in Europe that has sea coast. And similarly for the rest of the world. But I wouldn't mind asking the project members what they think about that idea once again. And please do tell me what your opinion is. One of the tricky things about lists by overall faunal zone (even though it makes a lot of sense to do it that way) is that some countries and islands have published lists, and some of those lists have already been turned into articles. Search for "List of marine mollusks of" on Wikipedia and you still see what I mean: New Zealand, Venezuela, South Africa, Chile, Mozambique, Brazil, Australia and Angola have list articles so far.
