Schaechter-Viswanath

Hi,

I'm pretty new to Wikipedia so maybe you can help me improve the article I posted today that you flagged for deletion, on Yiddish poet Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath. I looked at the notability test and I believe she qualifies. GS-V is one of the most important poets writing in Yiddish today; she has been published in many of the leading Yiddish journals and her book was published by one of the few mainstream (non-religious) publishing houses that publishes Yiddish. Her control of the language is remarkable. Please tell me what to add to make these things clear.

I am trying to create enough information in Wikipedia about Yiddish literature and culture to make it useful for the average undergraduate student. I am a literature librarian with a specialty in Yiddish. I made myself a list of 50 Yiddish writers I thought should be in Wikipedia. My plan is to gradually work my way through the list so that in a year there will be a good body of information there for Jewish Studies and Literature students to consult. I know that many of these names will not be household names outside the small group of people who study Yiddish. But the fact is that one of the main deterrents to people who want to study these writers is the lack of any source material in a major language such as English. Wikipedia seems to me the ideal way to make this kind of information available.

The article Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath has not been proposed for deletion, but just flagged for a routine notability check. As per the relevant Wikipedia guideline, WP:BIO, we don't carry biographic articles about any given persons, but only about notable individuals. So the first thing you want to do is establish this author's notability by citing verifiable sources.

I think that this author stands the best chance of fulfilling the WP:BIO criterion of "Published authors, editors, and photographers who have written books with an audience of 5,000 or more or in periodicals with a circulation of 5,000 or more". So you might want to provide weblinks to such publications and their circulation, e.g. to the author's books on Amazon.com, or to the articles she has written in those Yiddish journals. Maybe you can also find (neutral, verifiable) information that shows that she is a "professional whose work is recognized as exceptional and likely to become a part of the enduring historical record of that field". Please note that the (perceived) quality of the author's work is immaterial to inclusion on Wikipedia. What counts is her notability, as measured by real-world impact.

Thanks for your interesting points. I changed "mental illness" to "mental problem" because I tried to stress that, even if E. K. had a problematic personality, she was not clinically insane. The way you restated it sounds just right. I added the background-facts about Moyshe because E. K. was the one her mother turned to when in greatest need, and because details about his and her mother's fate are so often slighted that I'd rather add a sentence more to get it right.

Keep in mind that Israel Joshua died in 1944; in general he appears to have been generous and helpful. He got his younger brother I. B. S. his first, important job at a Warsaw Yiddish newspaper and later managed to get him to America and safety. He is known to have sent his mother and younger brother money as long as he could, most of which, of course, never reached them. There are speculations that his relationship with the two year older E. K. were problematized by "doctor games" which she is supposed to have started when they were both teens.

I. B. S. was a self-centered, highly productive artist with a reputation for being tight-fisted, punctuated by occasional flashes of generosity. But, contrary to his brother, he had been miserably poor for many years of his life, and in the early fifties lived from a modest salary at the Forward and his wife's income as a saleswoman.

Moishe Finkel

Thank you very much for your addition to the article on Moishe Finkel. I didn't know any of that. As the Faith Jones article says "I came across an elliptical mention of the incident but could find no more information about it in English…" I wonder where was the "elliptical mention"? Anyway, I don't think there was, prior to her article, anything on this in Romanian or German, either, at least not anywhere readily available. Great find! - Jmabel | Talk 07:40, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Quebec newspapers

The List of Quebec historical newspapers is presently unmaintained. In the French-language Wikipedia, the equivalent article was abandoned and a series of articles were created to replace it:

• Presse québécoise du 18e
• Presse quotidienne québécoise du 19e
• Presse périodique québécoise du 19e
• Presse quotidienne québécoise du 20e
• Presse périodique québécoise du 20e

While these are unfinished, they are well advanced, well organized and can be improved on nicely. Would you like to work on equivalent English-language articles? For example it could be:

• 18th century Quebec press
• 19th century Quebec daily press
• 19th century Quebec periodical press
• 20th century Quebec daily press
• 20th century Quebec periodical press

The best source to find all French-language or English language newspapers in Quebec is the Catalogue Iris of the BAnQ. All you need to do is search for any newspaper, find it, and then click on the subject link to see the whole category in which the newspaper was put. I have taken a break of doing this because it is a lot of tedious work, but eventually it will be possible to have all the major newspapers listed in comprehensive tables. -- Mathieugp (talk) 13:21, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
