Welsh names for English settlements edit
Please don't add Welsh names to English settlements e.g. Bristol & Bath. As this is English language Wikipedia it is simply not necessary. --Simple Bob a.k.a. The Spaminator (Talk) 10:32, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
- This has been discussed before - at a time when I favoured adding the Welsh names because, to me, they added interest - but the consensus reached (at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements) was that they should not be added to the introductory section, and so I haven't added them since. They should be mentioned in the main text if they are relevant - for example, in the case of Chester, in discussing the history of the city, the Welsh Caer (like the English name) deriving from the Latin Castra. Similarly, for Ross-on-Wye, say, it's interesting and relevant that the English name derives from the Welsh name Rhos, so it should be mentioned in the article text.
