Re: Newsletter and assessments

About the newsletter, how should one go about doing preparedness without being POV? You or oneself would be used a lot in it. I'll give it a try.

Hurricane preparedness includes actions taken before a tropical cyclone strikes to mitigate the damage and personal danger such storms can cause. Preparedness varies by area and strength of the storm, though officials recommend residents in hurricane prone areas to have a hurricane plan well before a tropical cyclone hits. President George W. Bush declared the week prior to the start of the hurricane season as National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which urged organizations to share information about hurricane preparedness. An evacuation plan should be ready in case a storm hits. In addition, one should have a hurricane kit prepared, which should include flashlights, batteries, a battery-operated radio, first aid kit, emergency, non-perishable food and water, non-electrical can opener, money, and other items for survival. If the National Hurricane Center issues a Hurricane Watch, hurricane conditions are possible within 24-36 hours. Precautions that should be taken include listening to the latest reports, checking emergency supplies, fueling one's car, securing outside objects, boarding windows, storing water, reviewing an evacuation plan, among other things. If the National Hurricane Center issues a Hurricane Warning, hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours. Precautions that should be taken include following any evacuation warnings. If one stays at a home during a hurricane, they should stay away from windows and keep a supply of flashlights nearby. If one evacuates, they should leave as soon as possible, avoid flooded roads, securing their homes, and bringing emergency supplies.

That probably sucks, but it's a basic summarization of the hurricane preparedness page. As for the assessments, I just think we need some more guidelines for what defines each class. Some users think pages are ready for B class when they clearly aren't, and they don't know why. In the assessments page, I just gave reminders of what should be done. Maybe I am becoming overbureaucratic about it, but simple things like having sources should be emphasized. Otherwise, you don't know if something is true. That's mostly for new articles, where people tend to add things that might not be true. However, maybe the criteria is too harsh. I'll admit, I have too high of standards for articles. Maybe they should be lessened a bit. Howver, looking at our GA criteria in comparison with the real GAC, it's pretty similar.

  1. They have to be well-written is probably the biggest thing- we don't even mention that.
  2. It has to be factually accurate with no citations needed- OK, that's criteria for B class, but it's clearly stated that any citations missing does not pass GA standards
  3. Broad- We just suggest having preparations, aftermath, and having more than one paragraph for the primary impact area
  4. Neutral- no mention in ours
  5. Stable- no problem, typically one person does much of the article
  6. Images- no mention in ours

OK, I guess I might be too bureaucratic for doing that, but our criteria isn't that different. Hmm, maybe I shouldn't be wasting your talk page with this. Should we talk about it more on the discussions page? The criteria was just a few things I wrote down, that you and Icelandic Hurricane agreed to. Should we give the assessment criteria a mention in the newsletter? After all, the newsletter goes to everyone. We could have a response section to have more involvement with some of the members....? --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:03, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

The newsletter turned out well. Nice work on another good issue, and thanks for the mention. Preparations aren't that needed, really. The newsletter is for the WPTC, not for people around the world. Sorry about the assessments stuff, but real world crap is wearing me out a bit. I'm working two jobs most days of the week, so sorry if I relieve a little stress on the computer. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:16, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
That might be a bad move. The last time I left Wikipedia for a few days, I got even more stressed :) Seriously though, I'll try to keep it cool. Yea, Uncyclopedia is awesome! Thanks for a laugh. --Hurricanehink (talk) 12:54, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Your Commons visit

Hi. You made this edit on the commons and I need 'edjamacated better'... Why pray tell doth it matter. I'd presumed you followed the link in {{w2}} wherein you'd made a similar edit, but that's not so. If it's important, then that ought to be changed as well. (I'm very much the tyro at the nicities and pitfalls in these @!#)(@*#__@# things. <g> So what's the story, please? Thanks! // FrankB 04:03, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Oops! My bad... I was thinking the diff was in {{w2}}, but was the commons w and you didn't use {{w2c}} either. On further review, that space has been there quite a long while. I thought I'd perhaps added it, but my edits were to cats.
Seeing as how the wiki's system software makes it danged hard to have two spaces in a row, and seeing as how that's a widely used template, if it leaves a space after others may have used that and rely on it for proper presentation... there and here (since text is mirrored down with pictures). Hence, now I'm concerned that your edit wasn't all that minor anymore. What's your reaction and answer to that concern as well. (Well, the use list is a lot shorter than I'd have guessed! Is probably okay.) Best regards, /// FrankB 04:26, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
You may be amused I had to make similar corrections to {{w2}} and {{w2c}} both here and on the commons... at the beginning though not the end. I did that too, but I doubt if it makes a difference. (i.e. the active lines now have no spaces at all.) Cheers! // FrankB 20:02, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
xpost
Glad that helped (a little). I suppose now you are going to have a thing against whitespace in templates. No problem!--Nilfanion (talk) 00:23, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Ya got a point. Yikes! I like whitespace and all the myriad squiggly braces in template logic truly take me back to the bad old days of assembler obfusticated coding... but that was clearer! // FrankB 03:49, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Iris

I'll just delete in, then. I'm busy as well, but I'll leave the link for someone to summarize it. --Hurricanehink (talk) 18:38, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Typhoon Pongsona

As you might know, I plan on doing Typhoon Pongsona as my next redo article. You mentioned that I should use JMA. Do you think that, instead, I could source Gary Padgett's December Tropical Summary for the storm history, which includes JTWC and JMA data? Simply using the JMA best track would be a little annoying, but by referencing that site, it would offer both centers. Then, the centers' respective best tracks could be linked in the other links section. Does that sound alright? Hypothetically if Pongsona was FAC'd, would that be a big issue? Thanks in advance. --Hurricanehink (talk) 01:53, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the input, and I completely forgot the possibility of Padgett using operational data. A major problem I can forsee will be the usage of maximum sustained winds. Should it be in 1 min. sustained or 10 min. sustained? JMA uses 10, which means it should be used. However, writing 105 mph (10 min. sustained, 145 mph 1 min. sustained, 190 km/h 10 min. sustained, 250 km/h 1 min. sustained) for example would be a big pain. I suppose it could be "Pongsona reached peak winds of 105 mph (10 min. sustained, 190 km/h 10 min. sustained), or 145 mph 1 min. sustained (250 km/h 1 min. sustained)". I think I'll explain the differences in the beginning, but every wind measurement will be long and tedious. A JMA track map would be nice (to get the official feel), but it only indicates a peak of 105 mph, as opposed to 145 mph from JTWC. I don't know. I hate when things are this complicated ;) --Hurricanehink (talk) 14:51, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, I suppose using 10 min. throughout works. What about km/h? Should that be in 10 min. as well? Glad you found the conversion factor, and given that 10 min. will be used throughout, the track map should be too. --Hurricanehink (talk) 15:29, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Commons images

Well, first check if the Alberto duplicates are being used elsewhere; if they are, you'll either have to replace all three with the new colored image, or you'll have to change the pages in the other Wikimedia wikis to point to just one of them. As for the Nassau pic, since both use the same data, just overwrite the old one and tag the new one with {{duplicate}} or {{bad name}}. As for the 2006 PHS images, yes, you'll have to do that: copy the current image to commons (and copy all of the revisions they've had if they've had more than one), tag them here with {{NowCommons}} or {{NowCommonsThis}}. Then, we have to wait for a week until they can be tagged with {{db|CSD I9}}, and then I have to transwiki them, which is a PITA. Heh. Yeah... you would never think that a few misplaced images would cause so much trouble, huh? Titoxd(?!?) 15:27, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I can't even open the second one, so I can't really see it. It's 1 MB for a 1024x633 image, though, so there must be something wrong with it. However, I see that the third one is a lossy compression of the first one, which means it has to go through the {{delete}} process at commons.
As for the revisions, yeah, I meant each individual upload, not each edit to the image description page. That's the job I have to do while transwiking the page... :( Titoxd(?!?) 16:17, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Irene stored for the ages

Well, it seems that WP:1.0 has now started the FA Review page, and in there, every single featured article is nominated for inclusion into WP:V0.5. And yes, that includes everyone's favorite article: 2005's Irene. How about it being on the same release as Albert Einstein? :P

Re: criteria

Good idea. I had never thought of it, but yea, using discussions and such can make subtle, yet important changes to low-importance articles. Given that I'm already here, could you possibly do me a favor? Could you possibly make a track map for all tropical cyclones affecting South America? I'll get you the list and the numbers, but I was wondering if that wouldn't be too big of a deal. --Hurricanehink (talk) 16:33, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Whoops, I actually meant having one map for all of the South American tropical cyclones. Is that doable? --Hurricanehink (talk) 17:14, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Cool. I'll get you the list later. I'm still working on the article to see which ones affected the continent. --Hurricanehink (talk) 17:24, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

That's all of them. Thanks in advance, this will look really nice. In case you're interested, they're for a List of South America tropical cyclones article I am working on, though you probably figured that. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:58, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Good point, Catarina is just weird and not that needed. Plus, it would expand the map too much. As for Beta, it struck the Colombian island of Providencia, that's why I added it. Yes, it's closer to Nicaragua, but it's an island of a country from South America. That's why I included it. --Hurricanehink (talk) 12:38, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, I emailed you back. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:38, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Cool. Grr... I knew I was missing something! However, I know for a fact (as well as you probably know) that I am a sloppy writer at times, and I overlook the stupidest things I write. Hurricanehink (talk) 18:00, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Delaware

I fixed that. I'm fairly sure the rest are good, too. If at all possible, could there be two pics in the one larger pic? One could be a zoomed out pic with all of the storms, including those that didn't come near the state, and the other would be a zoomed in pic of Delaware with all storms that crossed the state. Hopefully that works out, and thanks again. Also, I support either version of the worldwide pic. They're both so good, that I can't decide! :) Hurricanehink (talk) 17:35, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Since the newsletter is just so damn cool, I've decided to create my own subpage for it: User:Bob rulz/Hurricane Herald if you don't mind; this is just so I can organize it and be able to look it up whenever I want with one simple click of a button; hope you don't mind, but when you send it, could you send it here? Hurricane Re-Analysis Project

It is unlikely any Mediterranean system would be added to the hurricane database as it is meant to be for the Atlantic Basin only. As for the September 1996 Huron cyclone, I don't know. My guess would be that it would not be included for a similar reason (Lake Huron is not a part of the Atlantic Ocean), though it was a minimal gale. Any study of subtropical cyclones or polar lows would have to include it, for sure. I now have to dig up some links of the January 1992 Mid-Atlantic Polar Low/Subtropical system and the mid-September 1992 hurricane-ish system for that page's "other storms". There really were a trio of May systems that could have been considered between North Carolina and Bermuda; NASA picked the best of the bunch, I see. In this case, it's best to let sleeping dogs lie and not include a 4th or 5th possible addition for 1992, eh? =P Thegreatdr 17:47, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't confuse political correctness with inexperience. Those weekly summaries were ruffling some feathers as it was. Sometimes, though, ruffling feathers is a good thing. This system doesn't look much different than Harvey (1993). There was some unofficial rule back then not to write advisories for systems that weren't expected to last 24 hours. Once the sun rose and the system sported an eye (hard to see on those images), it was too late, when you consider that guideline. That night, the system fell apart as it moved over Nova Scotia. Is it true that you have of convert all knots to mph and km/h, and all nautical miles to miles and kilometres for every single article???? That contradicts everything. RaNdOm26 07:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Hopefully that's not too much trouble. Also, I don't really see the need to delete the image. Yes, it was superseded, but there's no harm in having two different images of the same storm, IMO. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:50, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yea, yea... Ok. Hurricanehink (talk) 12:38, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yea, I try and do that, but sometimes I forget. Sorry... I don't even remember uploading that Ernesto image, come to think of it. OK, I'll try and do that in the future. Hurricanehink (talk) 18:17, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll try and follow the new organization of things when I upload images in the future, but I'll wait until most of the categorization is done. Though the average person might not notice any difference, the changes will truely be great, and we appreciate it. Hurricanehink (talk) 02:04, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Cool. BTW, now that we're on the subject of the rainfall pics, I personally believe some of them aren't needed in articles, like Chantal (2001). What do you think? Hurricanehink (talk) 13:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Images on tropical cyclones

Would like to have the image "Cumulative tracks of all cyclones from 1985 to 2005" for a report related to cyclones over Bay of Bengal. Is there a restriction?203.110.243.30 11:36, 15 August 2006 (UTC) Dhrubajyoti (India)

The cumulative track image - Image:Global tropical cyclone tracks-edit2.jpg is in the public domain, you can do whatever you want with it with no restricions. Can I ask what you are making the report for?--Nilfanion (talk) 11:52, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

This is going to help suggest mitigation measures (like embankments, mangrove plantations, and even cyclone shelters) along the coastline of southern Bengal. This region is the estuary of river Ganges and also has the huge estuarine mangorve forest zone, called the Sunderbans. - Dhrubajyoti

Sounds interesting, hope it actually helps matters there. If you want, I will be able to make a similiar image to that one which shows just the area around India at a significantly higher resolution. If that's the case you might find it best to register an account to make contacting you more straightforward, so I can let you can know when its available.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:07, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. I got myself registered just now. The area of interest for our project is the head-bay region of the Bay of Bengal (North of the Indian Ocean). More precisely, the region could be described as being approximately north of the 20 degree latitude and bounded on on the west and the east by the 86 degree and 93 degree longitudes. : Dhruba@IIT 18:36, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

What's wrong with this image? I sent an e-mail to the creator of the website and he said it was okay to use the pics associated with Jose. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 15:21, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought those were US Government images. Storm05 15:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

RE: Images

Thanks for the tip, mate. I didn`t know about the commons page. I try to write the lemmas on the historical seasons, but as they are not a mere translation of the English articles (I use any information, i could find on the webpages of the National Hurricane Centre) it is rather a lot of work. If I see an interesting pic on the en. page, I'm inclined to use it, I`ve never given it much thought. Do you mean that the pics of the tornados, spawned by Danny (1985) aren`t PD and should be removed?Tropische Storm Sven 21:11, 15 August 2006 (UTC) Done.Tropische Storm Sven 22:04, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

RE Images

User:Golbez said that the six images that you removed were in the public domain. [4] you can ask him about the images if you like. Storm05 18:11, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay then, well back to the drawing board. I think the FEMA website may have some pictures of damage left by Gaston. Storm05 18:16, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

North Indian Cyclone Tracks

Thanks for uploading the image! It's great to see the 1970 track as it grazed very close by to our study area (just east of Bangladesh). The final report might take some time, could be a couple of months, and I shall let you know about the link once it is uploaded on our institute web-site.Dhruba@IIT 03:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

saomai

Sir,can you point me out which kind of WP:NPOV I have disobeyed? In expectation of your responseKsyrie 20:44, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

that is what I want to say, during the Tropical Storm Bilis (2006) which more than 600 deaths also in china, and the Saomai which more than 400 deaths, I see no help from the international society. Isn't it strange? NO, not even a simple pity. How can we react when the Hurricane Katrina which cause more than 1000 mens and womens' lives to be 'given' more care while the the two former reveived nothing? I just want to clarify one thing, they deserve more! while nothing were offered. And Saomai is the deadliest and costliest storm in China since 1956.Ksyrie 21:00, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
So the fact which I want to state here is that There is no help, isn't it one sort of fact? And which kind of WP:NPOV I haved disobeyed?Ksyrie 21:11, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

It's grotesque to make separte aftermaths for this storm, let's compare Hurricane Katrina which influence both USA and Cuba, can you see any seperated aftermaths?Ksyrie 21:42, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Ioke

Here is an article I made for Ioke (Chacor said you were making one too). CrazyC83 04:15, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: 10 min mean

I'm just saying that 90 percent of the people who read that are not going to get the picture of how strong the storm really was, because most of them are used to 1 min mean, which makes more sense anyway. I've been to the websites of NHC, CHPC, JTWC, JMA, PASAGA and AMA (Australian Meteorological Agency) and they all use 1 min-mean. AMA uses both. I think India and RSMC Mauritius. Are the only ones I've heard of using 10 min mean exclusively and I'm not even sure about them. It's ridiculous to use one measurement when 90 percent of your audience is using something else. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 18:51, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

In your haste to prove me wrong, you overlook the fact that 90 percent of the people who read this, the English version of the page, are American and know nothing other than 1 min mean. You want to split hairs, fine, we can split hairs 'till the cows come home. That's not going to change the fact that the vast majority of the people getting information from these pages know, grew up with and live by 1 min mean. They would look at that 105 kt figure for Saomai and say, "Oh, just a Cat 3." Ennh! Try a Cat 5. This kind of confusion is definately aggrivating and could be dangerous should anyone in the way of these things get the wrong impression, say an American tourist on vacation. He thinks it's a Cat 1 and he's safe but it's a Cat 3 and he's killed in the storm. It sounds over-fretfull but these are the things people around here have to think about. These things matter. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 04:12, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
This is ridiculous. How am I being biased? I thought an encyclopedia was supposed to be informative, but apparently I'm just a stupid user who thinks Americans are better than everyone else (*gag*). You want it your way, fine have it your way. What the hell am I wasting my time for anyway? Is Wikipedia supposed to be the place where we write down info that nobody understands? This version of the encyclopedia is in English. Why would the vast majority of Asians go to the version of a website written in a language they don't undersand? If I was looking for info, I wouldn't go to the Spanish Wikipedia to look for it. We're working on the English page and the people who are reading that page are people who speak English right? So why are we putting up statistics that only Asian people are familiar with? Sounds to me like you guys are the ones being biased, not me. I don't know why you guys are getting so huffy about this, it's not like I'm saying, "Asians are stupid, the American way is better." Our audience speaks English, so we should put up statistics that those people can understand. It's not a matter of bias, it's a matter of common sense: If I was giving a lecture to an audience of English-speakers, I wouldn't give the lecture in Chinese, would I? So instead of assuming that I'm out to dis non-Americans, why don't you actually read what I have to say. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 21:21, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

JTWC archive

Stupid Question: Do you know where JTWC keeps it's archives for the current season? Reub2000 08:08, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for finding the error in the Ioke track. It is corrected. Reub2000 14:41, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: FEMA

Damn, I hadn't thought of that. The declarations actually go all the way back to Carol in 1954. Well, I suppose we can't make the maps for them, but we can still say in Camille's aftermath section, "President XXX declared counties in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi as federal disaster areas, making them elligible for federal assistance". Hurricane Ioke (2006)

Thank you loads for this article, Hurricane Ioke (2006). I have read it and it flows, well-written and all. It would probably apply for GA rightaway ;) Lincher 14:36, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorting the images

I've been sorting images and adding the correct information to them exactly as it says here. There's a vast number of them that are poorly documented, credited, and broken. I started going through the 2005 Atlantic season again thinking I missed it, but realized you changed all the sorting. What's going on with that? The older images will need to go into some of those categories. Good kitty 21:52, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair Use Images

Do you think these images above are fair use? because i have listed them up for fair use review but some user had put them up for deletion because they are orphans. I already replied to him that the images are removed because of FU dispute but I havent recived his message. Please respond imedately on my talk page when you see this message. Wondering

Why aren't red links bad. If someone clicks there then they are gonna go straight to a page where there is nothing. And also, what the heck is preventing that article from being FA. When they submitted that article did they leave a list of criteria that yall didn't meet. Not trying to be a pest, but that is all Hink seems to care about and it would be special for him if we got that thing to their approval. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it. It should be FA, hell it has a moving satellite image of CharChar making landfall... Anyway I know you will be mad at me for typing this big fat blob on your page so... StormChaser666 21:14, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to but in, but I don't want Charley FA'd yet (thanks for the kind words). I don't think is ready, and I believe that Florida and Aftermath need to be finished first. And for the record, Charley has gone down a few notches on my caring list. Hurricanehink (talk) 21:43, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
