- Thank you. You're doing some good work on Leicester's articles, in particular picking up on that copyvio. It had been on my watchlist for years but I'd never twigged. What I've put up isn't great, but at least it's not copyrighted. And your points at Talk:Jewry Wall Museum are interesting, and regardless of the outcome of the proposal readers will have a bit more information to read so a good result. It was interesting to look up a bit about the museum as I knew the council had considered reducing museum services in 2011, but wasn't aware it was a re-run of 2004.
- Unfortunately for me you also found list of castles in Leicestershire. To call it abandoned would flatter abandoned articles. I'll get round to it at some point, but I think I'll be turning my sights on Lincoln Castle as Robert EA Harvey has made a start knocking it into shape.
- Anyway, keep up the good work, it's nice to see Leicester's articles getting a bit of attention. Nev1 (talk) 14:07, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks; I'm sort of slowly working my way through a few articles I found were lacking citations or information and trying to rectify it. I've made a couple of additions to the Abbey article and added a infobox. I'll see what else I can find for it after the spectre of university exams has passed and I have time to do proper research.
- It might be worth submitting it for a DYK anyway- could attract some people in the knowledge to make some big additions.
- I know what you mean about that castle article; I thought it wouldn't be too much trouble, but then I started trying to add things to it... just trying to compress their history into a sentence or two is enough of a challenge.
- Good luck with your Lincoln Castle (you'll need it if it's anything like the cathedral's)

If we were to put it through DYK I reckon Cardinal Wolsey dying at Leicester Abbey might make a good hook, though I'll have to add more on that this evening. I don't know if it would be passed given there was an article before, but since it was a copyright violation it is effectively a fresh start so I think it stands a good chance. Thanks for that. I found the image of a monk attacking a bishop quite funny actually. Its one of the reasons I like studying monasteries- they were all so naughty! Just look at the Leicester Abbey: the monks sneaking into town (we can guess for what reasons), and the Abbot who took his Jester to church services. With the Beeston one, I found the fact monks still had close personal contact with the pope interesting- a nice reminder of a time when the pope was thought of as a human being. Though John XXII and his predecessor were the ones who started the process of centralising the power of the church, acquiring and hoarding vast wealth, and raising the papacy to "princely" status... so maybe the last glimpses of the pope as an accessible human being rather than an aloof deity.
The Map itself wasn't that much trouble- just a lot of copying and pasting of coordinates. The tricky bit is the labels- fiddling with where they are placed, trying to get as many on. I've had to leave most of the sites near to Leicester unlabeled because they were so overlapped they were unreadable. Hopefully someone will find it interesting/useful never the less; I know I find visual representations far easier to process information from than lists.
I'm surprised how few views the DYK got actually. It was the top one, with an picture, and with a prominent figure like Cardinal Wolsey.
Wikipedia's a weird place sometimes....

Dungeon
I'm inclined to agree with your scepticism in Dungeon over oubliettes, but the cited source (Bottomley) does say what the article says. Personally I suspect all oubliettes are products of the Victorian Gothic or the tourist industry, but we need cited sources. Oubliettes seem totally impractical and a waste of resources. Water cisterns. storerooms, wells and latrines are more plausible explanation in most cases. Cyclopaedic (talk) 22:35, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- I commented out that bit as a temporary measure while I track down a paper by Peter Brears called "The Administrative Role of Gatehouses in Fourteenth-Century North-Country Castles". In it he specifically addressed the 'obliettes' in the gatehouses of Cockermouth and Alnwick so we can hopefully balance Bottomley's statement. If you get the chance, the paper makes an interesting read and takes a sensible approach to the subject. If I can't track the paper down in the next few hours, I'll unhide the text cited to Bottomley. Nev1 (talk) 17:44, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

- Thank you Gerda, I suppose it's nice that I've not been forgotten despite not being around much these days! Warkworth Castle was finished in the end (even made it all the way to FA), but there's plenty more to come. Corfe Castle is a beautiful place, and I left the article half written. It would be nice to get Lincoln Castle into decent shape as well. Hopefully I'll get round to them, time will tell. Nev1 (talk) 15:02, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
