Gremlin and The Gremlins edit
In the midst of a writing project on the origin of the Roald Dahl book The Gremlins, I came across a vast array of contradictory information as to the etymology of the term. In order to further the prospects of a movie project based on the gremlin mythology, Dahl made some extravagant claims as to ownership and creation of the myth. This came about in response to concerns at the the Disney studio and with Walt Disney himself as to to "author rights." The story that was fashioned featured a RAF fighter pilot flying a Hawker Hurricane fighter, an obvious allusion to Dahl's background as a fighter pilot. Despite other claimants coming forward who had conflicting testimony as to how Dahl obtained the story, Dahl was steadfast that he was the originator of the term. One author even suggests that Dahl was greatly influenced by Nordic legends of elves and forest creatures that formed his impression of the later gremlin. All of this supposition, however, is contradicted by a clear provenance from the RAF, and even from Dahl's transatlantic travelling companion who insisted that he had regaled the author with tales of the gremlins at work. FWiW, the book that was published as a marketing tool, represents Dahl's first children's work and is now largely unknown, albeit, still available in a restored reincarnation from a new publisher.
