Ciobar edit

you are right! It didn't occur to me, and I was burrowing in etymology, but now that you point it out it's perfectly obvious it's a loan from keeper. Regarding the Gaulish phonological stuff, feel free to correct/expand it. I only just dumped the alphabets there quickly so that the topic will be expanded upon. regards. dab () 07:09, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Tables edit

Hey Mongvras, would you like me to help you getting started using wikitables? Last I looked at it, the readme on "how to make tables" was hopelessly unhelpful. I mean, the basic thing is that tables start with the line {| and end with the line |} ... each cell begins with | (or ! if you want everything in it to be bold) ... and each line is separated by |- . So, the code

{| class="wikitable"
! A table
! Looking
! Like this
|-
| might
| have
| an appearance
|-
| closely
| resembling
| this
|}

gives you a table like this:

A table Looking Like this
might have an appearance
closely resembling this

Once you've mastered those fundamentals, then you get into the extraordinarily complicated matter of colours, spacing, cell padding. But I recommend using shorthands like {{prettytable}} or class="wikitable" to simplify your life. (The latter is what Everson's using at the moment on the Cornish language page.) Cornish templates edit

Hi Mongvras, On my userpage I have some userboxes indicating languages I speak, as well as languages I would like to learn. I've used the template {xx-0} for these languages, but there isn't one for Cornish. I was wondering if you could, as the highest level Cornish speaker on the English Wiki, translate this for me into cornish so I can make a template for {kw-0}. This is the text: "This user does not understand Cornish (or understands it with considerable difficulty)."

This would be a real help, I could update each language as I become more proficient.

Thanks for reading this, Bioarchie1234 17:36, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I've been away from Wiki land for a while. Here are the words you require :

Bad behaviour on the Cornish language article edit

Mong-vras, I must caution you that if you persist with your bad-faith POV-pushing edit-warring on the Cornish Language article, the is a good chance you may face sanctions such as a temporary suspension or banning.--feline1 10:13, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Perhaps you would consider removing your silly comments. Or do I have to complain about your behaviour? Your areas of interest do not seem to be related to Cornish in any way, so I can only assume that Eventype has put you up to this. I know it looks silly from the outside but there are some serious matters at stake right now. Please keep out of things you know nothing about and which are of no concern to you. Mongvras 23:11, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I see you are adding breaches WP:OWN, WP:FAITH and WP:CIVIL to the list of your heinous violations of editing protocol. Personally I think you should stop firebombing hotels and calm down and behave.--feline1 12:57, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
That last comment is libellous and possibly racially motivate. I would like an immediate apology. Edit: and I'm still waiting! Mongvras 23:09, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
You don't need an apology, just a sense of humour. Regards--feline1 20:00, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
You think firebombing hotels is funny do you? Mongvras 23:09, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, but I'm wondering how you can be so certain it was arson ;-) --feline1 00:10, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Defamatory comments edit

I have issued a Level-1 warning on the talk page of the editor concerned. If you require help from an admin, type {{helpme}} at the bottom of this page, and one will come along to help. Hopefully, it was an unthinking "one-off" and will not recur, but I will keep an eye on this page. DuncanHill 18:28, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, this really shouldn't be happening here. I may have over-reacted to Feline1's rather mindless comments on the talk:Cornish language talk page, but it had been a long day. What can one do? The sensible party is repeatedly attached by a bunch of idiots, do nothing and their message is all people hear, oppose them and you look like idiots yourselves. Never mind bouncy castles, I'm surprised most of us don't need padded cells, we've had over 20 years of this. But thanks again, meur ras dhis! Mongvras 18:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Back in the real world, you've been engaged in a facile edit war with a respected linguist.--feline1 20:01, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just been reading your own user talk page, need I say more? Everson knows a lot about Unicode and font design, but not all that much about Cornish. You appear to be an expert on chemistry and certain types of music, and know absolutely nothing about Cornish. But thanks for confirming my suspicions that he called you in to harass me. Now I demand an apology for your libel against me, and I politely request that you keep your nose out of matters that you know nothing about and which don't concern you. I hope I've made myself clear. Mongvras 23:09, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, clear as day that you've got a very bad case of WP:OWN, clear as day that you didn't become paranoid until you realised they were all conspiring against you, clear as day that you're so far gone you even believe yourself to be of a difference 'race' to me... Let me tell you why I was reading the Cornish Language article: because I was interested in the subject, and so thought I'd read about it on wikipedia. That is why wikipedia exists! I don't have to know anything about Cornish, or have been recruited by Evertype, to see that your editwarring was in violation WP:POV, and that you are a frothing like a mentalist and really ought to calm down. Be seeing you...--feline1 00:19, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mongvras, I have said most of what I ever intend to say about the whole Cornish-language thing on my talk page, but I would strongly advise you to ignore Feline1, and not rise to his bait. As his talk-page and history of being blocked demonstrate he has a history of disruptive and inappropriate behaviour, and he really isn't worth bothering with. No-one will take his mitherings seriously, so best to pretend he doesn't exist. DuncanHill 00:26, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's true, I don't! Some Irish guy just makes me up and writes all my lines for me :) --feline1 00:39, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry Duncan, this is entirely separate from anything to do with Cornish. Feline1 has implied, whether intentionally or not, that I am engaged in or planning serious criminal acts. I have explained that I do not consider this funny and asked for an apology. If he was joking then he should retract the statement and apologise to me. If he won't then I must take the WP equivalent of a libel action. I have better things to do than engage in pointless banter with him. I will give him 24 hours to apologise and then call in the admin. (And you wonder why there's so little detailed content re Cornish Language -- What's the point of writing detailed explanations of say historical phonology or Middle Cornish verse structure when you know that certain parties will revert it next day, and abuse you into the bargin?) Mongvras 01:02, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
"stop firebombing hotels" is a sardonic metaphor for "stop getting so ridiculously over-emotional about editing wikipedia articles". It was good advice and still stands. Continually abusing other editors and making wild accusations will only make things worse.--feline1 13:15, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please both read I have requested admin help, as I believe this situation is in danger of getting out of hand. DuncanHill 13:27, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Duncan, "please try to understand before one of us dies"? lol "I'll have to kill 'im, Mr Fawlty! I'll have to kill 'im!"--feline1 13:31, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Feline1, please stop with the sarcasm and incivil comments. My advice to you would be to disengage, take a cup of tea and relax. DuncanHill gives good advice, I agree with him - Ignore User:Feline1 and maybe the Cornish language article for a while. There are a lot of difficult users and vandals on Wikipedia, and sometimes the best you can do is to ignore them - in general, they seem to thrive more on attention than anything else. I know nothing of Cornish, so I'm afraid I can't offer an opinion on the content dispute. henriktalk 13:44, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Mongvras, Feline1 has now been blocked for a week for making a personal attack on you (see WP:NPA, hopefully we can all now draw a line under the episode and move on. Best wishes, DuncanHill 18:59, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you all. This is a very serious matter. The other day a hotel in Newquay, Cornwall was burned to the ground and at least one person died. A few weeks ago an unknown person, probably a looney, told the papers that "Cornish Nationalists" would make just such attacks. I do not believe there are any such violent groups in Cornwall, but it was the silly season and the press ran with it. I have been publicly accused of involvement in a very serious criminal act (if it proves to be arson). I pointed out that the statement was libellous and asked for an apology. What did I do wrong? How do I clear my name? (It would not be too difficult to identify me from some of my posts here). Can I simply delete this section of the page and be done with it? Given Feline1's record of trouble-making a week's ban is pretty pointless really. I know his sort they never give up. I more or less know how WP works although I'm not anything of an expert. So I find it difficult to outmanoever a propaganist like Evertype who knows all the tricks. I fear that attacks like the one on me here will simply drive away many new would-be editors who just want to contribute information, not engage in endless bun-fights. If they cannot be protected from gratuitous slander then they'll turn their backs on the whole business and WP will be the looser. Mongvras 22:39, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
The guidance at WP:NPA#Removal_of_text would suggest that it would be fine to remove personal attacks on you from this page. I feel sure that anyone reading through what has been posted would realise that the comment about fire-starting was untrue, and that the block on Feline1 is an indication of the Wikipedia community's attitude to his behaviour. I shall certainly keep an eye on this page, and issue warnings where appropriate to anyone I see breaking Wikipedia's standards, and I feel sure that other editors will also be keeping an eye on Feline1, given his history. In short - and I know this is a lot easier for me to say than it will be for you to do - try to "rise above" it, and concentrate on what is good in WP. We all go through periods of finding some editors highly frustrating, and feeling like walking away, but I hope you will be able to "stick with it".
I would personally like to invite you to come along to the Cornwall Wikiproject - it's in need of some new-blood, and I am sure you have a great deal to contribute to the community there. There is so much to be written about Cornwall, and a new perspective and insight would benefit us all. Best wishes, DuncanHill 22:53, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cornish Language WP edit

Mongvras, thank you for your message with regards to Cornish Wikipedia. Cornish Wikipedia serves the purpose, as do other Wikipedias in their various languages, of offering full-fledged articles in the Cornish language for everyone with an interest in or knowledge of the language. The problem has been that these Cornish speakers and writers of which you speak have been uninterested in offering their knowledge of the Cornish language. This is a great disappointment, as Cornish Wikipedia offers the ideal venue for Cornish speakers to display and share their grasp of the language. I personally know next to no Cornish, but I found Cornish Wikipedia to be a wounded bird in need of assistance and so I've been creating stubs and constructing templates for existing articles. Cornish Wikipedia has much potential and deserves the attention of Cornish speakers. In addition to myself, there is really only one other active contributor (Moon) who has done a fantastic job of writing articles and augmenting pre-existing ones. Where is this active community of Cornish speakers? I've emailed and consulted many Cornish websites and blogs and have received no response or expressed interest in helping to improve the quality of Cornish Wikipedia. The unwillingness of these Cornish speakers to assist in Cornish Wikipedia's progression is a shame and quite a shock actually. Instead of asking me what its purpose is, or why its relevant, you should be messaging other Cornish speakers to elicit their help in improving it. This does not bode well for the future of the Cornish language in the United Kingdom and in the World. --Caponer (talk) 03:58, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the somewhat impassioned response. Even though you caveated your query by saying your intention was not to "wind up," I somehow became "wound." :) --Caponer (talk) 04:01, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
