Fairlie NZ

https://nzhistory.govt.nz/keyword/fairlie was already referenced but the article was not fully quoted. To deny this information makes Wikipedia inaccurate. There is also much complaining in the town that Bill Hamilton is not referenced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IMMSNZ (talkcontribs) 00:48, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

IMMSNZ, The text was copied from the cited source, which is not under a compatible license, making it a copyright violation- even if it's correct, information cannot be copied from incompatible sources, sorry; and since it wasn't phrased as a quote, I removed it. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 01:31, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Moneytrees - please understand your technical talk makes no sense to us in the town of Fairlie. All information I have stated is known public knowledge - no copyright - and it is us that supplied the information on that govt site I quoted. Is there a Wikipedia office we can get a petition going to get more information about Fairlie on Wikipedia, given we are fundraising for a statue for Bill Hamilton and people are looking up about the town before they commit. If you not happy quoting can YOU please reword it for us to suit your technical ends, and we will provide a letter from our local mayor. Last year I had a similar episode on another topic I am an expert author on, where a moderator popped up questioning my authority to post information when it was ME that wrote the book on that topic! So that vital info has been banned from Wikipedia. How did you become a moderator? Did you contact an office? Do you have another authority up the line? It is sad when known public facts are not allowed to appear. How Fairlie NZ got its name and the association with Bill Hamilton is utterly vital. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IMMSNZ (talkcontribs) 08:32, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

IMMSNZ Sorry but we can not add that info back. Becuase it is not under a compatible license in would make it a (copyright violation- even if it's correct. If you are the owner of the site you can donate the copyright (See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials). Also Moneytrees is not a moderator, he is a Admin. How got it with a WP:RFA. I guess is there is the WMF legal team, but that is the oppiste for your case. Copyright is one of are most important Legal rules. Sorry but that's how it goes. Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 15:43, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

4 lines your reply only makes a tiny bit more sense but what part of the naming of Fairlie NZ and the mention of Bill Hamilton is copyright?? ALL sources are the same = from the locals like me and the Museum and plenty of published material - none is original nor copyrighted. The govt website quoted was from what several of us locals told them about (including me). I have written original poems and books and yet even those get banned on Wikipedia (except one). I have offered to get the local Mayor & Council to write to you and state it is public knowledge in these parts. We have rung a copyright lawyer and he is gobsmacked that you see how Fairlie is named as being copyright held. We need that info on about our town. Can you please tell me HOW to get that info on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IMMSNZ (talkcontribs) 09:37, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

IMMSNZ, You pasted the text "It was first known as Fairlie's Creek and supposedly named by David Hamilton, the brother-in-law of James Lister (or Lizter), a pioneer settler who set up an accommodation house beside the creek. At one time the name Hamilton was suggested but abandoned because of the prior claim of Hamilton, New Zealand in the North Island. David Hamilton then suggested Fairlie after the town in Ayrshire Scotland where he and his wife had spent their honeymoon." This text was taken from NZhistory, which is licensed under a non-commercial license, meaning it cannot be used on Wikipedia. Even if something is true, if it is copied from a site that is not compatible with Wikipedia's license, than it cannot be used. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 15:24, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
You can get the information on, you just can't copy it from the source. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 15:25, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

So the nzhistory.govt.nz website, which gets info from ME over other matters and in this case from the Fairlie Museum, puts it on their website, then claims copyright on my/our supplied info. What a hoot. I have written war history and military music articles and a book. Some info I have discovered but Wikipedia moderators took it down cos there was no other validated source!!! Most war history though is rewording what is already been researched by each other - so who is the original author? Legally what makes it unique is the way you explain it. BTW as an author (internationally), I have a copyright lawyer and he finds this bizarre. The post I did from Bill Hamilton came from ME. If you can't attribute that to me, then the 'Heritage section of JBNZ' (Jet Boat) and or the 'Fairlie Museum'. I am working on a public project for Bill Hamilton where the same info has regularly been put out in the local paper. That newspaper has suggested they will print an article about how Wikipedia is not allowed to print info. They will use the example about Fairlie - paraphrasing whats on Wiki already and we can submit that to you as its come from the newspaper. I think the most commonsense approach here is if you reword it for us to make it look how you want. If you run it past me, I will pass it on to our local Museum & Council who will write to you if you supply an address and we all be happy. Moneytrees messaging me telling what I cannot do means nothing to me or others here at all. We are country yokels who no matter what way you explain, simply do not understand your rules - and I am an academic lecturer researcher.

  • (talk page watcher)I don't think I've ever done this on your talk, MT. If it's not welcome please feel free to remove it. For our unsigned colleague above, perhaps a different voice will help clarify this for you. This is an encyclopedia. By nature, encyclopedias are tertiary. We will not ever just host your work. That's not what we do. There is absolutely no problem with someone paraphrasing content from your work and citing it, although we do discourage authors who edit here from citing their own work directly. See WP:SELFCITE for details. Generally it isn't a problem for you to cite a journal review of your own work; just not your work directly. MT, do you know which noticeboard is the appropriate location for further discussion of this? I'm thinking RSN or COIN. John from Idegon (talk) 10:25, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
IMMSNZ, Nah, it's fine to pine in... I personally don't think there's a RS/COI issue here. This is a tricky situation that I've seen before, where the author can't change the license of the website the content is on, and one of the reasons why I don't like copyright. To make thing easy, I just rephrased the content. It's somewhat similar, but is different enough to not be a violation and accurately convey information. QAnon revdel

FYI, that 94.x IP whose revisions you deleted is a long-term abuse case. Since I blocked the 94.x IP they've been using mobile IPv6 ranges on Moscow Telecom addresses. We've blocked several ranges, but it's a big, highly dynamic assignment, so the goal is to take the fun out of it for the troll. You can see some of their hangouts in the 94.x contribution history. TonyBallioni, Hey, you're welcome; I'm doing pretty well (actually graduated a few days ago). Really crazy year this has been, with the Rfa and then the virus right afterwards, I'm glad the community has remained mostly intact during it. I do miss the old username a bit, I liked it when people would simply refer to me as 💵…. I'm glad you're doing well right now too; after some recent events, I really don't envy you functionaries. Fortunately, being a copyright admin isn't that difficult, since everyone in the area are friends...I I'm even now in the top 100 of admin revdelers of all time. FaisalMusicFan99 socks

Hi Moneytrees - on 12 June, you kindly deleted 8 draft articles created by User:FaisalMusicFan99 which I had nominated for deletion.
These included Draft:Mark Heatley, which they have since recreated, along with Draft:Stories from Dr. Beau, which you deleted as Draft:Stories from Beau - in addition they have recreated Draft:Boys Don't Cry (TV series) which was deleted by User:Diannaa on 10 June as being a "Blatant Hoax"
They have also created Draft:David Mackie (director), Draft:They Might Be Giants and Draft:Dexter's Laboratory: The Movie which is a retitle of The Powerpuff Girls Movie and edited Draft:Frederator filmography which was created by another sock TheCurefan99 (talk · contribs)

As can be seen at User:Arjayay/Albert I have been following these socks for a long time - they don't usually use the same IP for more than a day, which makes blocking the IPs pointless, but since Diannaa range-blocked their most common range, they have stuck with 86.97.126.205 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) which could usefully be blocked
I need to find an admin willing to work with me on this, as it cannot simply be explained in an edit summary. Would you be willing to do that? - Yours, hopefully - Arjayay (talk) 10:44, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

I have cleaned up edits by 86.97.126.205 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) and blocked for a week,— Diannaa (talk) 14:12, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Diannaa - Moneytrees, sorry to have bothered you (my first paragraph doesn't make much sense now they are all red)- Arjayay (talk) 15:33, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
I just want to mention that you don't have to explain to each admin about this LTA case if you link to your investigation page User:Arjayay/Albert when tagging things for speedy deletion. You might consider adding a description of the case (including the name of the original account and a description of their MO) at the top to make things even clearer.— Diannaa (talk) 15:53, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Done...... you always find the weirdest stuff on blogspot. 20110727 was something me and two other editors were working on a few months ago (MER-C is still doing work on it)..... That one is annoying and terrible for a variety of reasons, it's best to just remove everything given how extremely disruptive the subject of the CCI was. Presumptive removals can get pretty complicated, I'll show you how to do them later today.... I'm a little pinned down right now by IRL work and interwiki shenanigans. The4lines, Yeah, those are PD quotes; and good work on those G12s! I deleted all four of them. As a side note, you don't need to add two copyright notices when you tag an article for G12, one notice is fine. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 01:56, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Cool thanks, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 20:23, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

CCI encourages presumptively removing content inserted in listed edits if you can't access the sources cited/no source is cited but the content is suspicious. They should be used as a last resort, or if spending time tracking down the source would take too long (like in a CCI where someone copy+pasted a bunch of plot summaries into articles; it's best to remove them all instead of figuring out what came from where). When presumptively removing content, try and remove as little as possible of what other people have written, and try to avoid removing refs and photos; visual editor is easier to use than source editing, although it'll occasionally glitch out when you remove a lot of refs. To tell if the inserted content is still in the article, (since articles are edited and overwritten over time), take the diff link and paste it into the "URL comparison" box and run the comparison on the article, which well then show if it's still there. You don't need to remove anything considered "basic prose", which are simple statements of fact examples can be seen here. Edit's not made by the contributor don't need to be removed, so if the contributor makes an addition to an article they didn't created, you just need to worry about the content they inserted.
The 2011027/Billy Hathorn CCI is a terrible one, extremely large, with every page tainted by socking. Here's an example of me removing one of his edits;
I pick Bill Workman. I got the history of the page, click oldest, and then look for the last edit Billy made, this one (you can ignore small edits other users made in between). I take the diff link and compare it to the article in earwig, and it's mostly the same; time to burn it all. I remove everything except the lede and infobox in visual editor, and then save with the edit summary:
"Presumptive removal over copyright concerns, please see: Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/20110727"
You'll probably be using that summary a lot; I've pasted that summary on my CCI sort and CCI guide page for easy access, when pasting remember to remove the "INSERTNAME" tag. Once the content is removed, go to the talk page, click "new section" and then simply write {{subst:CCI|INSERTNAME}}, like I do here. TO mark the listing as done, write something like "P. removed". I include an  / {{x}} when I do so, but that's just something I do.
Keep in mind, you'll often end up removing a lot of text. On bigger/more important articles, people may notice and question you, sometimes aggressively. Keep calm, and honestly explain why if someone asks; if you don't know what to say, email/ping me.
And that's that; sorry for the lengthy instructions and wait. It's best to start doing these now, since the dead link fixer is down, making website based CCIs (such as cacrats) harder, since earwig can't scan dead sources. If you're confused, feel free to ask questions, or watch my edits since I'm going to be doing so P. removals now. Thanks again for helping out, Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 21:03, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, I declined a copy paste violation on [2] as what was copied was a quote. Do you see any problems with my copyvio removals? A editor told me that a copyvio on Football in Iraq but then Primefac comes and RevDel it. Any comments? Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 03:53, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
The4lines, you're doing well, some advice to make things easier;
  • when tagging for revdel using the script, please include the revisions that need to be redacted and the url (unless you're coming here for a quick revdel)
  • If someone asks you why you reverted them (like on football in Iraq), include the copypatrol link when responding to them. You can permalink reports using the link under the "Page fixed/no action needed" buttons.
I didn't get the hang of these early on either, so no fault on your part. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 15:16, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, hopefully I can use my other computer so I can fill out the RD-1 request. And for the football of Iran advice! Also for the Geneolgy on Devgadh Baria Its a copyied but I am not sure if I should remove it. The4lines, I rvd' the Honduras one.... that editor has become a regular at copypatrol and is edit warring, I have my eye on them. The Devgadh Baria one is a borderline example that I was also unsure about; it's not necessarily a violation, since it's just a list of names and positions, but it's not very well written, so I removed it as not being cited to a reliable source. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 20:44, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Could you RD-1 the two pages I removed copyvio? (Just look in my cont.) Also look at Draft:Charles E. Gagnon becuase I tagged it for promo but I'm not 100 percent sure. What did you do charles E. Gagnon draft? Never seen that, and what is the difference of possible Copyvio, and copyvios? in the Thanks, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 01:55, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
I blanked it for processing at Copyright problems, where more complex copyright issues are put. As (I think, since I saw an earwig search had been previously run) you saw, the draft was pretty closely paraphrased to that website, and I'm not really in the mood to carefully dissect an article, so I just blanked it for CP to handle. If an article has been listed at CP for more than 7 days, it can be deleted... and MER-C, the one who does a bulk of those deletions, is one of the top anti-spam users. On the topic of the g11, the article was a pretty close case; there was a lot of flowery wording and obituary esque language.... so instead of declining/deleting it, I just decided to throw to CP. When it comes to copyright, sometimes the best decision is to "cut the knot" so to speak. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 02:26, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
The difference is CP tends to be used by non-copyright experts when they're unsure of a problem, hence the difference in wording. Some users, like me, use it as "storage" for more complex issues. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 02:28, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Right, thanks. I will just stay in Copyvios, as I'm a trianee to be a copyright expert (lol). Maybe if ever I become a Admin (I hope so) maybe I'll work there.? I guess I will you WP:CP for storage. Thanks now to Presumptive removal over copyright concerns my favorite.... Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 02:44, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Henry Morton Stanley From Cartas Is probaly is a backwards vio. Could you check. (Sorry for bad grammar) Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 16:07, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Yeah the WordPress was a backwards copy. WordPress is just a hosting website like blogspot, so people can paste whatever there with no sort of quality control. Unless its cited as a source, be skeptical of WordPress sites. I did find a birtannica copyvio on the article and removed it; in the case of this CCI, the copied from sources were cited in the edits (compare this edit to what I removed), so you don't even need to run a full search; for bigger articles, just compare the source url to the article, it'll save time. The4lines, I see no problems with your presumptive removals... just keep in mind that they might alarm some people browsing recent changes. If someone comes to you asking about them and you don't know how to answer, just ping/email me and I can step in. Could you revdel the pages I tagged for RD-1? (looks like Spillbrick and Primefac got them.) Thanks, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 15:45, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
For CCI's do you have to RevDel the removed copyvios. I have not tagged them for Revdel... Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 02:39, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
(Sorry for not getting to your revdel requests... I've been cloged up with irl work) It depends. If it's a smaller copyvio, say around 300 bites, it doesn't need to be revdeled. Larger ones, like 600+, should be revdeled, but some admins may decline the revdel if they think it goes too far back. That's what I abide by, at least; there is no offical concensus on what requires a revdel and how far it goes back. It comes down to the performing admin's own discretion. Sorry for the delay, I'm been busy with RL stuff. Thanks, I'll use it (I have now!) Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 20:49, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
To explain dead links a bit more, they're urls that no longer link to their original content, usually redirecting to the websites home page, Like here; note the difference between the url when you hover vs. the url in the search bar on the page it loads. Other types of dead links are 404 errors and ones that redirect you to a completely different website with unrelated content. Dead pages can't be scanned by earwig, so dead links need to be fixed using Archive.org and other sites like Archive.is. These cites "crawl" pages throughout the web, creating snapshots of what they looked like on a certain date, which can be scanned by earwig. Hunting down archived versions of dead links can be very annoying, which is why a bot was created to do it for us. Go to the history of any page and you will find the option "Fix dead links" in the "external tools" line. Clicking it will bring you to a page that will add archives of dead links if you run it on an article. Make sure to check the box that says "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" before running, since the bot can't always tell when a link is dead. Once submitting, a bot will make an edit on your behalf, linking to an archive site. After that, you can compare the archived link to the article using the url comparison function. Note that you can do this on all pages, not just my subpage; I only use that for when the links are no longer in the article. For most pages involving web copying at CCI, there are three steps:
Check edits and current article to make sure the refs are the same, archive the links, and then scan+remove. If the refs are gone, just go to the subpage, plop them there with a ref tag, archive them, and then compare. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 22:43, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

That's ok.... I'm essentially the head honcho at CCI and I don't really care :p, the clerking stuff is mostly symbolic now. I just wouldn't recommend closing+ archiving some of the crazier, intense CCIs. Next time I think you should try and archive more sources, just to make sure a dead link isn't being plagarized (although that's something I also didn't do early on too, common oversight.) Guess not that best time to talk but ok, I like you copyright noticeboard idea you have. (Looking though Dainaaa's talk page) Think it is a great idea. I would love to help you (Once you have time) make it or something along those lines. And for the block of Khanya Arosi. Could you check Draft:Chandraprkash singh rajpurohit (I should stop asking you during a wikibreak :p) Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 16:56, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
Nah it's fine... I'm mostly taking this time to finish some video games I never completed, since I'm moving out to college soon. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 02:58, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Hey Money, How are you? I say we archive this dis. and make a new one. Also [4] Do you think that was condescending? Amkgp [5] thought so. Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 01:22, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
I don't think that was condescending, it was a pretty neutral response imo; it seemed that they were just removing all CSD declined notices with the same edit summary. They may be upset for some reason, so it's best to just leave them alone. I'll archive this when you thank this edit; and sorry about the OS earlier, I probably gave the wrong impression with how I was talking about graduating.
