Your recent edit

Your most recent edit to Nambassa, here, created work for others. Is it because you don't know, or are you being obtuse? I have fixed it now, but if you continue to make edits that others must necessarily rectify later, you can be blocked for disruption. Have you read the how-to links above? Moriori, why talk about blocking a new user at such an early stage in the cycle, to someone who is creating in a very important piece of kiwi history? I'm working in collaboration on that article, and I'm happy to give whatever it takes to make it up to featured article status. I would like to see authentic good faith applied to any opening discussion, to any new user, and have a few transactions under the belt before such a tone. You couldnt know that I have had a many email a day çonversation' for nearly a week with this user, to cleanup and expand this article. It was likely my lead as much as anything, influencing the style, but anyway we are FULLY into building the best we can build. It does require a time component and I plea for patience, as I do everywhere else, and suggest that there are many other kiwi stubs untouched for long periods needing such attention, only they are desperate for help and we are not, we are active. Having said al that I do appreciate your care and concern, as I have elaborated elsewhere before i read this, and I quite see the need for checks and balances, its the yin and ying of wiki, we cant exist properly without each othhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Pageer.moza 07:24, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Moza, we can do without people IF they don't try. Mombas obviously must have seen the dozens of edits I made to Nambassa, particularly to changing capitals to lower case, and the corrections to spelling. In the very next edit he made, an addition of only seven words, he capped two words which should have been l/c, and he managed a basic spelling mistake. If he continues to make lots of edits and each time someone has to come along behind him to make corrections, then he deserves a rocket IMMHO. I am astonished you can say there are stubs "desperate for help and we (Nambassa article) are not, we are active". Being active isn't the yardstick. Article quality is, and despite all the previous activity on Nambassa you can see the dozens of amendments I needed to make to get it up to reasonable standard. Your recent edit of "Hippie"

Hi Momba. Your recent edit of the "Hippie" article creates some problems.

The first problem has to to with redundancy and making the lead less concise. The lead (previously the first five paragaphs before the "Content" box) has been edited down over time to succinctly mention the main themes of the rest of the article. Much of what you added repeats themes already mentioned in a more concise way.

The second problem is that the paragraph you added should properly appear somewhere in the body of the article, not in the lead. Also, much of what you write in this paragraph is a rambling discussion of your personal perspectives. Wikipedia is not the place for such discussions.

I would encourage you to analyze your own contributions and edit them down. Eliminate any redundancies. Incorporate a concise mention of any new themes you want to introduce (mention of the Essenes or the Nazarine movement, for example) into the text of the lead as it existed before your edits. Then find an appropriate place in the body of the article to enlarge on the concise mention of the theme as it appears in the lead.

I have done so much editing lately that I am hesitant to get into this article again, especially to remove whole sections that you added in good faith. But I am sure that other editors will do so if you do not refine what you have added. Thanks. Founders4 18:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Various edits to "Hippie" article

Hi Mombas. I've appreciated your recent contributions to the "Hippie" article.

One suggestion; please try to check for consistency with the rest of the article before you press the "Save Page" button. For example, in your recent addition to the "Sexual attitudes" section, you used "hippy" instead of "hippie," which is the spelling used throughout the rest of the article.

I gather that standard English syntax and terminology may be a challenge for you. You can easily check the meaning of specific words at One Look Dictionary (http://www.onelook.com/) if you are in doubt.

A few items:

-Although I think it was good that you referenced "The Historical Jesus" aricle and linked it to "Christ," to refer to "the historical Christ" without using a similar term to refer to the other visionaries creates problems.

-Most people more easily recognize the spelling "Lao Tzu," so I changed this detail.

-In your addition to the "Sexual attitudes" section, you used a sentence that widely separated the subject and the predicate, which caused the reader to labor. In composing your sentences, please make sure you choose a structure that brings subjects and predicates into reasonable proximity. (Not a large problem, but in the same sentence you used the word "purported" incorrectly.)

-Also, hippie women began to remove their bras MUCH earlier than 1970 when Germaine Greer published her book--by 1965-66 most hippie women in California had removed theirs. I kept the last phrase (cleaned up for standard English usage) by making the timing of it indistinct.

-By the way, Greer herself made a point of not wanting to make a "rule" of bralessness, as bras do make sense for some large-breasted women. Does she, by the way, accept the "hippie" label? Personally, I'm not so sure.

Anyway, if you could please exercise a bit more diligence in your writing, that would be appreciated. Thanks. Founders4 17:02, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Points taken. However, on the question of whether Greer would accept the hippie label today I too am unsure. However her most informative period in the 60s were spent with people that were definitely considerd part of the diverse counterculture movement. To quote from this recent Australian article [1], "She studied originally at Sydney University in Australia, but headed to England in the 1960's, to the centre of the cultural life of the British Empire. There she was involved in the bourgeois counterculture with a place alongside prominent activists in the alternative press. It should be mentioned that this counterculture movement was of course part of the hippy movement with its ideas of free love and sexual liberation. This movement was not simply anarchical but had its roots in a variant of libertarian philosophy, which Greer also adhered to". cheers Mombas 05:24, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Other visionaries

Hi Mombas. Regarding the addition of Lao Tzu and Krishna to the list of visionaries who exemplified the ideals of "peace, love, compassion and human fellowship" in the "Hippie" article, there may be some problems.

-We know almost nothing of the life of Lao Tzu.

-Krishna engaged in warfare, which may or may not disqualify him.

I am not an expert on these two historical/religious/philosophical figures, but I thought I would mention my doubts. Please inform. Founders4 18:12, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Lao Tzu is the father of Taoism and violence to a Taoist is not recommended and deemed unwise. I have never read any works attributed to Lao Tzu where even the slightest connotation of violence is suggested. The Taoist work, the I-Ching, widely used among old and modern hippies reflects the sentiments of Lao Tzu that a wise person will reject hatred, intolerance and violence, rather embracing love and harmony. Perhaps this article might help? [2]

On the question of Krishna having engaged in warfare, this too is unlikely and its interpretation depends upon which variant of the Bhagavad-Gita you support. If Krishna was a violent person then his teachings against violence in the Gita are exposed as hypocrisy. If one were to judge the historic Christ on the recorded history of Christianity, then it would be presumed that Jesus was a warmonger responsible for the savaging and deaths of tens of millions of innocent people whose alleged crimes were that they refused allegiances to the Roman Church. This too would deem Jesus’ accounts in the gospels as hypocrisy. There is no historic war of Krishna Kurukshetrawar, and as indicated in this photo Krishna attempted to separate the two armies. [[3]] Much as Francis of Assisi attempted to separate Christians from Moslems from war.

My understanding is that Krishna separated for Arjuna the mindful distinction between good and bad or love and peace. And made the appropriate choice.

Hindus like Christians teach that violence is acceptable in certain circumstances. This theory contravenes what Jesus and Krishna taught. Mombas 06:43, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Please have your friend supply an e-mail to you specifically stating that he releases the image under the Creative Commons ShareAlike 2.5 license that you tagged the image with. The e-mail needs to have some kind of contact information for him for verification if necessary. This e-mail should be posted on the talk page for the image. Vandalism on "Hippie: Drugs"?

I don't think it was vandalism, Mombas. The section that was added was full of spelling errors, errors in language, errors in logic, and in general it was just very poorly done. Also, much of it was untrue, and some parts were wild exaggerations. I applauded its demise and am sorry to see it back. I think it detracts from the article in a serious way. If you think it inappropriate and unworthy of a fix up, even though it would appear you won’t say why it’s inaccurate, then you delete it yourself. It would appear that it’s difficult to get anything past the self appointed gatekeeper. Right mate ;-)? And while we are on the subject, I must admit many of the articles which make up the hippie inclusion are woefully inaccurate anyway, and reflect only that minor aspect of the 1960s and 70s social revolution involving the social dramas caused by American youth desperately seeking to find some political solution against serving in that debacle the Vietnam war. Can’t blame them really, and from down-under we helped stop this war too. The articles seem to be dominated by issues essentially covering events which the corporate media deemed important to have on their front pages at that time. We are all gatekeepers here, Mombas. We define ourselves as such when we take on a concern for accuracy and good quality. I mentioned an inaccuracy or two on the "Hippie: Talk" page; could have mentioned more. I wasn't the one who considered this addition unworthy and deleted it, but I was relieved when it happened. And disappointed when it reappeared. Its poor quality is so apparent, I thought I'd leave it to someone else this time.

You are right that the hippie article tends to be America-centric. Regarding the origins of the movement, I think that's mostly appropriate and reflects the reality. As it progressed, the development of hippie culture was much more interactive and involved many other parts of the world--for example, the interplay in music between Britain and the United States was especially important and has not been mentioned.

I was previously unaware of Nambassa, and I was glad that you added the information, the photos and so on. Sounds like the hippie movement in New Zealand maintained its freshness longer than did its American cousin. Founders4 08:22, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

couple unrelated questions

re: this edit Is either Founder or Events Coordinator official titles? If so, then maybe they should be capitalized? since you are associated with Nambassa, thought you would be the one to ask.

Also, noticed on your user page that you are into photography, and since we are working together on an article, I thought you might consider that we are friendly acquaintances, and maybe it wouldn't be too out of line to ask for a suggestion to solving a problem I have encountered with photography...

I have scanned an old black and white picture, and it looks right in photoshop, on my monitor, which I am sure is set to represent a faithful reproduction of the right color, and the pic looks right on the monitor. However, when I print it with my Epson Stylus Photo R200 printer it comes out with a slightly different appearance, a green cast to the image, and the shadows are denser and darker.

Are you aware of any easy fix for this, to adjust my printer for more faithful reproduction of what I see on my monitor? Some software or wizard or something simple? I have a fairly high degree of familiarity as far as computers go, you could give me the short version of an answer. If you have an answer and don't mind my asking for help.

Thanks for your advice and kind words. I have had that problem of printed green tinge on the odd occasion too and found it to happen when I have overworked a particular image in Photo Shop. While I am only a hobby photographer I would guess that perhaps the cause is: either that one of your cartridges on your printer is running low on ink, or perhaps Photo Shop is not set to Image--> Mode--> CYMK color, before working it and saving the image for printing. When I scan a B/W pick I always scan in full colour mode and not grayscale, this enables more adjustment of the image before saving as a jpeg for printing. Perhaps as a tester, burn the image to a CD and for a few cents you can have it processed at one of you local photo developer outlets. Kind regards Mombas 00:20, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Photosizing, Alpert, Gaskin

Hi Mombas. Thanks for resizing and relocating photos; those sections look much better! How do you like the photos that photographer Robert Altman allowed us to use? I was really excited to get them.

Made a small change, since both Leary and Alpert were Harvard professors. Most know that all Harvard professors are "Dr.'s," so dropped that appellation for Alpert instead of added a matching "Dr." for Leary.

Felt the "California hippy" label needed to go because the section starts off with a British song, moves to New York City events, then goes west; just wasn't accurate. I know you are anxious to make the distinctions between CA, NY, British, and Down Under contributions--perhaps this can be done with individual notations?

Couldn't find the reference--did you add the Gaskin paragraph? It's a good addition, as he certainly needs to have a place in all this. Given the dating, probably better to put him in the "Summer of Love" section, and I'll try to do some editing later when time allows--none this am. Also, Altman has a great photo of Gaskin's Monday Night Classes that we can use. I remember those sessions well. More later.Founders4 18:03, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I think the Altman pics are appropriate and real cool. And yes I did add the Stephen Gaskin section. I see your point with regards to the "Californian hippy" label; however I must stress the need to extend this date on the sub-heading to at least 1970, thus reading 1963-1970. By extending this period we may avoid more sub headings covering other integral events like John and Yoko and the Beatles new found hippie peace initiatives. Not to mention of course the myriad of hippie groups and sects that formed around communes and the follow the Guru era. Perhaps the movement did come to an abrupt halt around Haight Ashbury soon after 1966 due in part to the Manson fiasco, but in fact it consolidated and reinvented itself in other parts of the country and around the world- after this period. Just incorporated the Gaskin info, as well as info on quite a few other important events, in a new section called "Late 1960s." "1963-66" was kind of a prelude, then the "Summer of Love" exploded in 1967, then the "Late 1960s" saw the maturation of the movement, and then the decline ensued--at least in the United States.

Thanks for the compliment, Mombas! I have appreciated your contributions as well, many of them "diamonds in the rough," so to speak.

One quibble. Your previous reductions in photo size all seemed to help with page layout, however I looked over your recent size reductions for the "Anti-Vietnam War Demonstration," "How Do!", and "Monday Night Class" photos and really feel that larger sizing makes these photos much more effective. The "demonstration" photo needs to be at least 450 for the faces to show a bit, and for the "arms up" stance of many of the demonstrators to be apparent (at least on a 15" laptop screen)--without these details the photo loses quite a bit. Same with the "How Do!" photo, as one must be able to see the expressions of goodwill on the faces of the participants. With regard to the "Monday Night Class" photo, the lack of detail at the lower size makes the photo nearly unintelligible.

By the way, with respect to this last photo one might think, since Gaskin has his back to the photographer, that the photo isn't very good--but actually it conveys something very important, namely that Gaskin was not a guru. The collective consciousness of those assembled (and in the larger format you do see them gathered together in this fantastic space) is what made the Monday Night classes so memorable.

Page layout needs continuity and the photos you refer too should be resized smaller so that they remain consistent with the rest of the photos in this article. Remember Founders, that the pics in all Wikipedia are only meant to be photo-thumbs which can be resized to their full blown resolution with the click of the mouse, if one so chooses to do that. Anyhow the captions on each photographs clearly indicate what’s in the photograph thus enabling free choice if one so desires to take a closer look. Everyone knows Steve Gaskin is not a guru and even though he's a friend of mine, I am quite sure he would not mind his Monday night class image downsized giving continuity to the rest of the article. I hope you see my point and change these images back to their lower resolution, which after all are visually crystal clear anyway. Mombas 09:29, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

I guess we disagree, my friend! I don't think photos of different sizes are really a problem--depends on the photo and what it shows. The Altman photos are so good that it seems a shame not to show them at full advantage; many readers will miss a lot of his artistry with the smaller format. It's true that they can be clicked to achieve full size, but one has to be sufficiently enticed to want to do that. You and I may be familiar with Gaskin, but I can guarantee that lots of other folks aren't; not everyone reading this article is a former (or present) hippie. Just visited a few articles that I think have good pics: London, England; Sydney, Australia; Paris, France; San Francisco, CA; New York, New York. To me the variety of sizing is truly attractive and effective. BTW, I wasn't arguing that the Gaskin photo needed to be large to show he wasn't a guru--that was just a sidenote. Thank you for confirming what I have been intimating. I agree that your above mentioned articles are enhanced by their photo distribution and they all in the main vary in size from between 200 and 250 px unless displaying a map or similar. The photos that need to be reduced in format size in hippie are between 420 and 450px. Get the drift mate? Mombas 08:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I see a number of larger photos on the pages mentioned. Depends on how large the photo was originally, the px designation notwithstanding. For me resolution is the issue and whether or not the message of the photo is effectively conveyed, not absolute size. Founders4 16:04, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Viriditas edits to "Hippie" article

Hi Mombas. Today Viriditas arrived and created a total of 16 (I think) sequential edits that I believed damaged the "Hippie" article. In particular, I think the changes he introduced in the lead greatly weakened it. Started a discussion section dealing with this in "Hippie: Talk" and reverted to a previous edit for now. My two cents: if the roof blew off my house, I'd fix the roof, and not worry too much about where the wind came from. Viriditas is a good editor and his intent is not evil, trust his judgement and experience, and his belief that he is improving the article. Fix anything he breaks, and solicit his comments, his intent is likely the same as ours. We all just want to make the article good. So does he. We don't need to beat him up... Founders, remember the huge changes I made to the article, which you opposed... we worked out a much better article from that conflict, didn't we? I'm inclined to let him tear through the article unrestrained for a week or so and see what he comes up with. User:Pedant 19:12, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Request for citation

Hi Mombas. As I'm sure you are aware, Viriditas continues his attacks on the "Hippie" article. Pedant has, at least for the moment, washed his hands of it, as he is sick of Viriditas' high handed approach. (You thought I was bad!)

I am trying to keep Viriditas from arbitrarily deleting material. The best way to do that is to meticulously provide citations, which seems to stop him and deflect his groundless assertions. I am hopeful that after he is through trashing the article enough will be left to put it back together again. Not that ALL of his edits are wrong, but his condescending approach is clearly a problem.

Viriditas has put a citation request on a paragraph that I believe is important to you:

Outside the United States, hippie culture has remained more visible as a countercultural movement. Especially in Britain, Denmark, New Zealand and Australia, the hippie movement as a distinct social phenomenon continued to develop and thrive.

Unless we provide a citation, I am concerned that Viriditas will delete it. Can you please provide some sourcing information, at least for the New Zealand aspect? I will incorporate whatever you provide, or you can just go ahead and do it yourself.

Also, Viriditas initiated an RFC Request. If you go to Hippie: Discussion and scroll down to "RFC Request," two administrators have asked those of us who object to Viriditas' non-collaborative approach to voice our objections clearly. If you could find the time to do so, that would be much appreciated.

BTW, can you put me in touch with Stephen Gaskin. I haven't talked to him for nearly forty years, but I have a couple of important questions I'd like to ask. Founders4 23:21, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

In an attempt to satisfy V's citation requests (don't care to say his name) last Saturday I spent nine hours doing research and adding citations, only to be accused of fraud (!!). Since I have one foot in the adademic field, I do not take such charges lightly. Finally concluded that I just can't afford to invest more time in the project--too few rewards, too much heartache. Hello, I'm a neutral editor but you comment on the Hippie talk page asking that an editor leave an article alone due to consensus is in some ways out of line. Please review WP:CIVIL as this can be taken as a boarder line violation of it. Please assume good faith in this I'm trying to deescalate this issue before it goes higher. Thank you for your kind comments, Mombas. Actually I would prefer V learn civility and stay, however I have zero hope that this will happen anytime soon. He has proven to me that he is a dishonest individual, and a vicious one at that.

There is one item on the "Civility" page that I think is apropos:

"It should be noted that some editors deliberately push others to the point of breaching civility, without committing such a breach themselves."

V is clever, and I believe this describes his modus operandi. He gains strength by causing others to resent him. But it's a perverse sort of strength that is characteristic of evil--as such it can easily be defeated. All we have to do is refuse to resent V.

Not easy! I KNOW!! But essential. I think that is what Jesus meant when he said "Resist not evil." He didn't mean just let evil bowl you over; no, we have to stand up to evil. But we have to do it while disciplining ourselves to maintain love. Individual control of our own thoughts is the key; I try (when I can remember, that is) to pray for my enemies.

So, to what extent do I consider V an enemy? As I've said, I believe he is dishonest and vicious; he proves that every day by continuing to slander me. That's why I appreciate you sticking up for me--I can't do it myself without seeming to engage him.

Yet he does have his contribution to make--hey, maybe this is it! Can Pedant, Mombas and Founders4 deal successfully with evil? V may be playing the role of villain in this particular life drama.

The "Hippie" article is getting progressively worse, of course. I think we just have to accept that for the moment and let it go. The more important thing will be to maintain our love and our humanity in the face of an attack by a person who has no love himself. I think how sad that is; no love....imagine. V has to live with that every minute of every day.

Well, I may be preaching here. But I'm going on because somehow I know you are someone I can talk to. And this tragedy with the hippie article (Pedant used that word and I think it is apropros) is very much on my mind. A test really: Can we keep it from becoming a tragedy in real life, a tragedy in our hearts? Just to let you know what the TRUTH of it is- if you haven't already visited the page. All that utter CRAP about "the warrior of his POV" is utter tripe. Absolute, utter nonsense. The incident with the money changers is a single, solitary piece of a complete paragraph. One can read the entirety of my edit, which ONLY stands as a secondary balancing of the initial portrayal of Jesus as a pacifist individual. The rest of the edit concerns Jesus direct connections to Jehovah in the Old Testament- as you most likely know, Jehovah and Jesus are both considered the same individual by most Christian denominations, and Jesus himself spoke of how "I and my father are one". I have been attempting to discuss this with Rbj, but he insists on spewing absolute crap like my "edits have no integrity". He's been altering my talk page comments on top of his insults, AND shoving things like "Jesus practiced what he preached"! right into the article, as well as making threats regarding the 3RR to me. I've given up trying to civilly discuss this with someone who absolutely refuses to be civil about the matter. He can sit on the farking article all he wants with his POV in fact, because I really am tired of trying to talk about things with him. I figure you deserve the truth about the matter, however. You both need to work this threw amicably.

As far as the reference to the whip is concerned this word is ONLY mentioned in John’s gospel, while Matthew and Mark make no reference to it and speak only of trashing the tables and setting the animals free. They make NO reference to this whip whatsoever. In John, the use of the word whip is mentioned only in relation to Jesus trashing the building, where he used the whip to frightening, stampede and free the animals, which after all were probably there in the temple to be sacrificed in the old Judaic tradition. In my view, not only does Jesus demonstrate that he is a pacifist but an animal lover as well. In Matthew he goes on to teach that animal sacrifice is wrong. Quote, “It is love that I want, not sacrifice.” With respect, I disagree with your assertions that Jesus was not a pacifist, because they are unsupported given his clear and unambiguous statements on these issues as I have demonstrated below. As far as Jesus’ supporting connections to Jehovah of the Old Testament, there is some Gospels evidence to support that JC did not buy into the OT doctrines concerning violence against persons, this demonstrated by his clear objection to Leviticus’ theory on an “eye for an eye”, (turn the other cheek) and his serious character assasination of the keepers and interperaters of Jewish law, the Pharassees, in Matthew 24. Don't stalk me

I can't help noticing that edits from you have appeared overnight on a variety of articles I edit, on unconnected topics. That would be fine, but you've been nitpicking: putting {{fact}} tags slap bang next to proper citations (citation needed for already cited quotations from reputable newspapers and magazines?! wtf?), putting fact tags into the lead of a Featured Article which was promoted this year (i.e. under the current strict citation regime), and trimming captions to the extent that they don't convey any real meaning about what the picture is about (caption: "Wings"; Wings had multiple lineups).

I also suspect this is in response to my removing of excessive linkage to and reference of a music festival you were involved in. In such cases I always left context about the picture, such as the year it was taken.

To answer your question [6], My browser, Opera shows the size of page + all external elements in its built in Information panel (plus if you enable the full progress bar, it gives a running report while loading). The tendency for hippies towards eastern religion was through Hindu groups and the Beatles certainly promoted this infatuation.(Lennon and Harrison.) Hare Krishna was probably the most predominant of this wide variety of Hindu sources. In the US the first Krishna's were essentially hippies as supported by these links. just a short note to say I'm still around, checkin in from time to time. I'm blown away by how much youve done, I just read this entire page to get a handle on the state of play. Ive published several thousand photos on the galleries and banners on those sites, the index to the largest collection is here Music Image Galleries and in there you will find plenty of natural photos as well, as Ive been to the Inangahua Rain Forest via lots of places and published pics of Robins and all sorts. I'm making videos of many performances (PHAT / One Love / Parihaka) and I ran days of time-lapse sequences from the hills (Lahar Mounds) at Parihaka International Peace Festival, and I also was video camera-person for main stage video projection for Dave Dobbyn and again for Tyra Hammond and Open Souls, a totally heady experience. Good to work with Dave after so many years.. I'm running events and running stalls and speaking to audiences about Dark Sky Taonga, protecting a precious natural resource from pollution, and Ive been learning Maori Navigation and Star lore, so yeah its full on. I'm still putting together a visual show to work as a vj with live acts to bring all that knowledge and awareness to as many people as possible, without preaching too strongly, just showing the beauty of nature that we need to protect and nurture. The problem I have encountered is that while the image loads up quite normally, the photo will not display in the browser. “Second upload attempts” have failed too. I have finally figured out this problem. I usually resize an image before upload in Photoshop, and have on occasion not ensured that the saved image is in RGB format. Images that I’ve attempted to upload that are in CMYK have all rebounded and not displayed in my browser. The bottom line is, Wikipedia software will process only RGB colour and when I’ve reloaded dud images back into RGB they have uploaded successfully. Mombas 11:37, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

back in touch with you re images

just had a look.. both articles seem perf3ect to me at a glance.. isnt an event that is so rich in diversity justified in having it llustrated? isnt that the point? that it simply doesnt fit with most peoples experience of reality and can NEVER be described adequately in words? so i spose that means we are in a losing battle but whatever, if we had smellovision and toucharama we would be better equipped to convey the meanings more accurately, and then they would be complaining of the sensory overload that it actually was!! If they put as much thought into saving the planet as saving wikipedia from people like us then we would be on target I reckon. I heard people say that Lord of the rings was too loud, too long, too violent, too this too that.. people are rarely satisfied with things until they change them, its a dominance and ownership thing i reckon. I'm reading the book of est right now and ive just done landmark forum so i see where they are at and I'm trying hard to not pick any conflict, but to adopt a posture of loving and acceptance, and leading out of the difficulties so that everyone gets what they want, but hats showing me that its pretty hard to alter my ingrained behaviour. so yeah patience and communication, two areas of my life i am working on. chur moza 10:32, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Although Wikipedia is not a commercial site, there are examples of Wikipedia being used commercially, for instance the German Wikipedia was sold as a DVD. Perhaps the easiest way to resolve this is to get in touch with Greenpeace in Auckland and they can decide whether the use of the image in this instance is commercially driven. In the summary, you said the image was "released into the public domain for fair use". You can't release an image into the public domain for fair use. "Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as use for scholarship or review." If you release something into the public domain, it has no restestions to it's usage, and therefore Fair Use doesn't allpy. Right after you saying the image was "released into the public domain for fair use", you say it requires attribution. If it's released into the public domain, you can't require anything, because you basically no longer control it's use. While you might have a valid point; however in a similar circumstance I would have given prior and adequate notice to a problem which might exist with someones else image, rather than tagging the said image with a deletion notice subsequently wiping out a whole page of supporting photographs, when in fact copyright provision was quite adequate anyway! I apologize if I upset or offended you at all. That was not my intent. I think I did give adequate notice. The notice I used on the images gave a seven day timeframe to fix the images. I also put a notice on the most relevant article's talk page. I disagree that the copyright notice initially given on the images was sufficient. Naturism

You have included some really useful info on Nambassa- it needs to be linked in somewhere. However, in a heavily policed page such as this- one where the entire link section has been culled and directed into dmoz project I think you should prepare yourself for the inevitable. Blogs are frowned upon as reputable sources - but they are more likely to survive sources than as external links. You may feel that you have enough material to write a new article Naturism in New Zealand where you could explore the issues further- orNaturism in Nambassa. Sundial photos

There is a comment on the Sundial page about the lack of images from the southern hemisphere. What is needed is images of standard sundials- not the artistic or experimental, but geotagged garden dials and vertical dials on public buildings so we clearly demonstrate that the annotations go backwards (due of course to the fact you are standing upside down :-) ) Do you have any you can upload either to Commons of here? --ClemRutter (talk) 09:13, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
