Template categories

Hey, great work on all those templates! I was wondering whether you would like to put them in a good category. The best I found was the rather empty Category:German navigational boxes, but you could also create your own subcategory. Instructions are at the category page (don't forget the <noinclude>). The part that is noinclude'd out could also contain an interwiki link. All of that is not important and just silly perfectionism, though :-) Kusma (討論) 04:11, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

If you add a category to a template directly, then any page that includes the template will be in the category. (Typical examples are stub or cleanup categories). So to categorize the template, but not the pages where it is included, you put the category inside a

<noinclude>...</noinclude>

construction. (There is also the opposite: To add a category to articles using a template, but not the template itself, place it in

<includeonly>...</incudeonly>

No kidding. What's even worse is having to clean up all the links when an article gets moved to a new name, no one seems to bother anymore. Sometimes even double-redirect are not cleaned up, complete Sisyphus. Although in this case, once it gets done it should hopefully stay on top and not roll down the hill again... Gryffindor

My RfA

Hi. I am sorry to bother you but I wondered if you might be prepared to take another look at my RfA nomination. The main reason that I ask this is because there has previously been some confusion as to my talk count and I also wonder if there might have been some confusion regarding the duration of my contributions. I would also like to comment on some of the concerns raised by others, which I have discussed on the nomination page, but which you may not be aware of.

Firstly with regard to my talk contributions and the duration of my contributions. I just wanted to clarify that I do have substantial numbers of contributions in the user talk namespace although significantly less in the main article and wikipedia talk namespace, so I do have a good history of interactions with other users but primarily on their user page (furthermore I have a good track record of warning vandals - something is often lacking for many vandal fighters both admin and non-admin). Regarding the duration of my contributions, I just wanted to clarify that I have now been contributing for 15 months in total and, although I have had a few "lean" months when my focus have been outside of Wikipedia, I had almost 2000 contributions before February and there have been 9 months when I have made 100+ contributions.

WIth regards to the concerns raised by other, which aren't covered by the above, they seem to relate primarily to my lack of contributions to the article talk and wikipedia talk namespaces and what this says about my community involvement and exposure to process. Firstly I would like to say that I don't think my contributions in this area are particularly low when compared to other current nominees and recently created admins who are/were heavily supported (I have provided some details on this in the comments section of the nomination) - as I said in the comments section this is not to say "they are supported so why aren't I", rather it is just to provide a benchmark to compare how common my contribution pattern is. Secondly I would like to point out that I do not typically revert vandalism in these namespaces which I believe play a significant part in the number of these contributions for vandal-fighter editors (especially in the article talk namespace). Finally I would just like to reiterate my personal opinion that, regarding edits to Wikipedia talk, contributing and understanding are different things (i.e. I do understand the policys and guidelines even though I have not actively contributed to them). With regard to my community involvement, I do have a fair number of edits to the mian Wikipedia namespace and also the user talk namespace as previously mentioned.

I understand that contacting you in this way may well be considered "campaigning" but I want to assure you that I am driven by good practical intentions rather than ego. As you will be aware, I am primarily a vandal fighter and I feel that the admin tools will allow me to far better serve the community in this area. Specifically I come across a lot of situations were there are very few editors on RC patrol and a lot of vandalism is being missed, this is compounded by the fact that AIAV is often not being heavily monitored during the same periods meaning that blocks are delayed and a lot of time is spent reverting vandals who have already received a final warning. This extra time spent reverting known vandals obviously mean that much new vandalism is missed - with the obvious effect on the quality and credibility of Wikipedia.

I would like to sum by saying that I feel I could make good use of the tools and that I have never done anything to raise concerns that I would misuse them. Cheers TigerShark 20:55, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Regarding low edit count in some areas/spaces, I don't look for that as much as for a sign that your edits are of good quality. My ogg files

Hello Mmounties! I have recently started recording the pronunciation of the German names for various places in Central and Eastern Europe. I have begun listing them at User:Olessi/Ogg. Although I am not a native German speaker and I have been influenced a bit by Holsteinisch, I have tried to give Hochdeutsch pronunciations. However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of them sound goofy to a native speaker. Would you mind listening to them sometime and letting me know if there are any I recorded poorly and need to improve upon? Olessi 23:09, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

That's a VERY nice job, you did there. A couple of very minor comments (and I wouldn't redo anything for it): (1) You seem to roll the "R"s if they either appear in the beginning of a word or after another consonant (specifically B, P, F and T's. You also rolled it in Marienburg and Thorn. I've never heard a German in regular conversation do that (except if they're from Bavaria and even there they only really do it emphasize).  :) Apart from that I only noticed that you spoke Osterode with an open O in the beginning. It should be a closed O like is Ostern, not like Osten; and Frauenburg sounds like Frauenborg. Like I said, the way you pronounced them is perfectly acceptable. These are just some things to consider as you go on. Oh, and I changed the German word for Schlesien from Silesia.  ;-) Hope this helps. --Mmounties (Talk) 23:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your observations! When I began learning German in high school, our teacher had us rolling "R"s. An instructor in Kiel corrected me a few years later and made the same observations about Bairische. When preparing to record these .ogg files, however, I noticed how a number of files at commons:Category:German pronunciation had rolled "R"s, and that influenced the way I was pronouncing the names. I am planning to rerecord the files in question, as I would like to get them as close to Standard German as I can. The "O" in Ostpreußen should then be open as well? Also, should Lyck have standard "y" pronunciation (somewhat similar to Lück)? Olessi 00:26, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Oki, that's how I had recorded Lyck a few days ago (haven't gotten around to uploading it yet). I just rerecorded Osterode- want to give a listen again and see if I have the opening "O"s better this time? Also, should Breslau have a short or long "E"? Barnstar Brigade The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date: "Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. Austrian Emperors

Oh, they went great! I found German to be the easiest (imagine that!). I finished almost two weeks ago and I am currently back at my parents' house. It's also not too long before I head off on a trip to New England. Bad news upon returning home though, my cat of 8 years died :-( Charles 15:20, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

We have a pup (well, she's a year old) too. She's a purebred German shepherd. I'm still at the point where I expect my kitty to bolt around the corner, with this hyperactive pup in chase. Well, my cat was the feistiest little beast I ever did see. He was extremely territorial as well; he really was king of the house. Given his jet-black colour, we called him the Prince of Darkness on occasion (for his colour and feisty attitude). He would tease the dog to no end so that the dog would react and then he would passively act as if he had done nothing wrong! The dog really does miss him though. She ran away the day after he went missing. We think she was looking for him. I think deep down they really liked each other. Charles 19:49, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

It's good to see you editing again even if you're still deep in moving/unpacking stuff etc. Thanks for your nice words -- I was pretty happy myself with the lack of oppose and neutral votes. I'll be mostly on a wikibreak for the next two weeks (I'm in Europe), but I'll be able to get next month's stuff up for the Portal in time. Could you check out Portal talk:Germany and comment on Angr's proposal of a Sanssouci double feature? I think I'll create the pages for next month on Friday or so. Nice to see you back. Yeah I was surprised too, I realised there was time to re-open the FAC debate, and with one quibble it sailed through with no problems. Easiest I've ever known there. The quibble was addressed (sort of) and the objector (I don't think he actually objected) never returned and that was that. It will eventually get to the front page, but that in my experience that can be a mixed blessing, nice to see at first, but then often horrible to watch as people start to edit, vandalise and carve the page up. With all modesty, I do think it is at present one of Wikipedia's best pages - long may it stay that way. If you ever need any more architectural advice give me a call. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. Stressbusters The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome! Ancestors of Nicholas II of Russia

Remember this perplexing "little" article? It was very user unfriendly and did not present anything in a particularly readable or even all-inclusive manner. I have researched the ancestors of Nicholas II and came up with the ahnentafel (only back five generations so far). However, on the talk page, there is a user who has been following my edits and he has apparently objected to my removal of the content of the first page. Since the content is preserved in the edit history, I think it's fine even though the first batch of info is pretty useless. Charles 00:52, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I have worked a bit on finding more citable sources for the article, and have expanded it a bit more. Could you try to give it a little more polish? I am not certain how well the prose in the "Forster at universities" section flows not that I have inserted some more stuff. A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs. To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves! Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!) Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach. Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. What's New? The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one! Suillus luteus

Hallo Mmounties- Regarding the above article, are you sure that S. granulatus is a look-alike? My mushroom book, the Audubon Field Guide to Mushrooms, has that mushroom in it, but doesn't give it as a look-alike. It gives S. subluteus (Slippery Jill) and S. cothurnatus. -Eric ^(talk) 04:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mmounties- Maybe I'll just add the look-alikes from my Audubon book and leave the one that's there. Do you know the Wikipedia policy regarding directly quoting info from a reference book?
