Rater

Hello. You are probably the most extensive user of Rater right now. However, I want to remind you it is still rather beta quality software, and it has been rewritten recently, so it might have errors in code which worked fine in previous iteration. Reviewing your edits helps me find bugs I might otherwise overlook. But that task would be eased somewhat if you had an eye for them too. I update the script semi-regularly as I find errors, so please make sure you use the latest version (add the script to your watchlist and WP:BYPASS caches to fetch the updated version). Template data updates also require clearing caches to take effect. Rater has recently acquired a raw source editor and preview, so you can check that (and even manually correct) before saving.

Also, I would like some feedback about the UI: right now I think it is quite ugly, and yet I am rather uninspired about how to make it better. I promise nothing, but if I get to this, I want to know which directions to try.

Hi Kephir! Thanks for making a tool that I am obviously a fan of :) I did notice the update, and I added the script to my watchlist. Does that mean that it'll just update automatically and I don't have to change anything in my vector? I'm still trying to get the hang of the script stuff. I'll think about the UI - bear with me if I'm a slow responder, I'm preparing to head on vacation this upcoming week and I have a busy weekend preparing. Like I said, when you clear your browser cache (however you do that) your browser should download the newest version; otherwise the cached version is used. On my Chromium, the method listed at WP:BYPASS (Ctrl+F5 on any Wikipedia page) seems to work for the script itself, but not for template data — for that I myself choose the appropriate page in browser inspector and refresh that; emptying whole browser cache would work too. I probably need to find a better method. So no changes to /skin.js are necessary. But while we are at it, would you mind to drop a link back to the tool's page (after two slashes)? I want you in my statistics. Mwahahahaha! Seriously, it is more of a vanity plate than anything, right now I can still keep track of whoever is using my tools. Or just claiming they do.

As for adding template data, surely. When you click the "[ed]" link (shown when you expand the template entry), you will be taken to an editing page with a header linking to format description (a bit incomplete as of now) and some sample data pre-filled. Just remember to put all commas in place (and not put them elsewhere), it tends to choke on that a lot. A more specialised editor (or at least a syntax checker) might be a good idea, but I am as of now undecided.

I actually dislike that this data needs to be separately kept at all, but I can either do that or campaign for more standardisation in banner templates — right now some use imageneeded, others needs-image, and yet others needs-photo for a parameter that adds the same request. Deletion discussion of National Association for Gun Rights

Hi, Sarah.

The discussion was closed as 'Keep' by Faustus37, a self-professed inclusionist, in a non-admin closure. I don't think that his non-admin closure was appropriate. I realize that you can't do anything administratively since you commented in the deletion discussion. I'm asking if I'm on the right track. I plan to:

1. Ask Faustus to justify his closure on his talk page. I will let him know that if I disagree with his justification, I will take the discussion to...
2. Deletion review.

Hello Sarah -- I am revising the Guy Maddin pages in my spare time, since I am a scholar of Canadian English and Film Studies specializing in experimental film and literature. I plan to revise the John Paizs pages and do other such work in the future, but these Maddin pages are especially inaccurate and lacking depth, so since I have published essays on Maddin that seemed like a good place to start. I am relatively new to Wikipedia so just wondering if being a film scholar is somehow a conflict of interest when discussing films, and if that is what you are referring to. I have interviewed Maddin for articles in the past and of course know his work well, although I have never worked on any of Maddin's films. In any case, I have been trying to be as neutral as possible through reliance on quotation, but I'm wondering if you think I am overusing quotation or at least quotations from the primary subject (Maddin) and if that's creating the tone problem you seem to feel exists, in which case I will try to be more mindful of that. HI there. That's great that you're diving in - no being a film scholar doesn't mean COI, I'm an art historian by trade, but remember - it doesn't matter to most Wikipedians - they often don't care, so just a heads up - if you write content and someone challenges it and you say "Oh, but I'm a film historian and I have a degree in blahblah.." they don't care. "Everyone is an expert," they say. So, just remember that. Also, it's easy to get overly connected to your article especially since it's your speciality, so don't get too attached - sometimes it can cause more damage then anything else. I had to stop writing about certain subjects because I got very irritated with how the articles evolved. And, yes, if you "cite' your own work, that may be a conflict of interest. I am not sure though. I can't really promise I can provide too much insight or reviewing for your content - I am very busy with real life and if you need help you can probably find better and faster help at the Teahouse, a project I started to help new editors like yourself. There, people will give you simple and easy to understand responses, generally faster than I can. I just don't want you to rely on me. I haven't written about film or filmmakers, but, one article that I did write that I am proud of, that uses quotes, is Louise Nevelson, so that might help you as a general reference to the use of quotes in articles. Hi Sarah,

Thanks so much for improving Wikipedia. I'm in awe at your work ethic and your smarts and like your idealism.

Regarding the need for negative reviews for The Math Book, what if all the reviews so far are positive? I dislike seeing articles on things I like tagged all the time. It's really a more general problem. Has anyone at Wikipedia seriously thought about hiding the tags about articles? This way the readers would not always have to be made aware of potential issues with articles. Is the answer this is just how it is on Wikipedia? Or should the articles instead stand alone without reminders about how they are incomplete or biased?

Would you have any insight into the proposal to move article tags to the article talk page or to a new kind of page or perhaps to appear only during editing? This way, when we read articles we're not always reading tags for whatever reason. Thanks much for any insight. Your 'undue weight' tag initially annoyed me a lot. My first natural reaction was here is someone who doesn't like this article and that is why they are tagging it. But your user page really cheered me up.

I'd rather see a published article separate from its tags. They say presentation is very important in many things. Would hiding the tags improve both Wikipedia's readability and its image as an 'encyclopedia'. Ray Kurzweil's mention of 'false pretender technologies' comes to mind. Wikipedia has pretty much replaced encyclopedias, but perhaps it is still missing the original encyclopedia's clean style. Is Wikipedia a 'false pretender technology' and would making tags hidden help fix the problem? In any event, thanks again for your work.

Thank you very much for your invitation to the Teahouse, it's a godsend considering how new I am to being a Wikipedia editor as I originally posted only to help resolve the problems with bias etc on the John Riccitiello article (of which I was quite nervous to do so). I most likely will be using Teahouse in the future in order to help to resolve these issues. But I was wondering, would you or any other experienced editor be willing to check out with the John Riccitiello article? Because despite my will to improve the quality of the article, I feel I am far too inexperienced to adequately tackle and offer solutions to the various problems I feel are present within the article. If this isn't really an option that I do not mind, I still appreciate the invitation regardless.

Source usage analysis of Women in Chile

You might be interested in this page, which includes an analysis of the source usage in the article Women in Chile. I started doing this because of a discussion at the Education Noticeboard about whether students typically used sources correctly. I decided to take some example articles from the spring 2012 semester and look at every single source in them, and determine whether there were any errors in the way the sources were used -- either direct quotation without quote marks, or close paraphrasing, or inaccurate representation of the source material. You are one of the main editors of that article, so quite a few of the source attributions are to you. So far I've analyzed references 1, 2, 7 and 9, and your name has come up multiple times; I thought you might like to take a look at the analysis I've done so far and let me know if you think I've made any mistakes. Hi Sarah. I followed your direction and correcting almost everything on the article I'm writing. My only question (and problem) is: why discogs.com is not considered realiable as source for albums and records in wikipedia english, while it is considered reliable in italian and spanish wiki (you can check the corrispondents articles on both)? And so, when you need references for album released, what is considered a realiable source for wiki english? Association (ecology)

Hi Sarah. You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Association (ecology). The rules at DRV say that I should try to resolve the issue with you first, before raising it there. Given the discussion, it was entirely appropriate; unfortunately the discussion was flawed.

The term "association" was coined by Alexander von Humboldt. Links include a couple classic papers by Henry Gleason (the former cited 1538 times, the latter 339, according to Google Scholar), mention in R.F. Daubemire's classic textbook; while it is used less in modern vegetation ecology, this is a recent work on the subject.

Hopefully you find this compelling (if not, I can supply a lot more sources) and have some idea what to do next (I wouldn't be sure if someone asked me to undelete an article). I really don't have much of an idea what to do, as I made the decision based on the decisions of those who were discussing the article in the deletion discussion. I'd advise perhaps listing it at deletion review for further community input. This is nothing personal of course! I'd be more comfortable having someone else perhaps make the decision. It's quite common for admins to delete or keep subject matter that they might or might not be as familiar with, and sadly, this is a case of me not being as comfortable or aware of the subject matter to make the final decision on if it merits inclusion or not. (butting in) SarahStierch, I suggest that you discuss what to do with admin Mark Arsten. Many times when he's deleted an article, he's undeleted it upon request. Or at the very least he offers to userfy the article. I'm sad to see this deletion stay completely deleted! Especially that it was deleted after only two votes made on September 28, one from an IP with only seven edits. MathewTownsend (talk) 18:45, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, yes, Mathew is basically correct. When someone complains about an article I deleted (which happens a lot) I'll usually userfy it for them and tell them to add citations and proof of notability to the draft. In most cases, I tell them to open a DRV, using the draft as the proposed version. They seldom get that far. I suppose if they really fixed things up I'd just restore it... maybe asking a knowledgeable editor in that area what they think (I've done that with athletes before). Sometimes, instead of userfying it right away I'll ask them if they have reliable sources to add, (some of them never reply to that) and if they just come back with facebook links I'll tell them they need to find better ones to proceed. It's rare that I'll immediately undelete an article after being asked, but that's mainly because the articles are usually just spam for minor businesses/bloggers--not situations like this one. Thanks. I quite understand your uncertainty - as I said, I wouldn't have known what to do if someone asked me to undelete an article I'd deleted after closing an AfD (luckily, I haven't closed an AfD in years). But DRV said to try to sort it out with the closing admin, so I though it might be better to follow the sequence of action proscribed by the bureaucracy, (When did we get so bureaucratic anyway? I'm almost afraid to use the tools these days for fear of falling afoul of some new regulation).

removed one of your TH sem-protect templates

Hi Sar,

FYI: I removed the semi-protect template from the host navbar css install page. Tbhotch pointed out to me that because of our the way our button-click install process works, this template was being added to people's common.css pages. I think our options are to either a) fully protect the page, like we do with the Userscript install page (since that doesn't require adding a template) or b) get rid of our easy-install process (which makes me sad), or c) just leave it open and watch the page. Page creation: Jethro Rothe-Kushel

Hi Sarah, I need your help figuring something out. The article Jethro Rothe-Kushel was deleted about a month ago via an Afd. It's blatantly self promotional, has been written solely by one account (which has no other contributions) and the references fail even basic tests. The article is now up again in almost the exact state having been created using the Articles for Creation system. Since you were the one who put it back I'm wondering if you can help me figure out what happened. I have never seen this situation before and it's a pretty obvious gaming of the system by one user. Isn't an attempt at recreating a deleted article supposed to set off a warning? I can't find it and need help figuring out what happened before going through the afd process again and wasting time. Reason I added in those sections was because the previous reviewer said I needed to have evidence of notability. I have now removed the promotional language from the summary and also made it clearer that it is Wired.com calling it out as a success story.

Hi Lyn. Wikipedia has special notability guidelines for authors, you can read about them here. It is against policy on Wikipedia for people to write articles about themselves, so even if they were alive, they would be blocked as a user for doing it. Wikipedia assumes that, if someone or something is "notable" enough, it will eventually be written about. However, you have to use notability guidelines to prove their importance - or everyone would have an article. Also, Amazon and the publishers website are unreliable sources, this is because they use content that is provided by the author or the publishing house for content, meaning that they can say anything and aren't trust worthy. We need reliable sources about him and his work - if his work is that important it will be reviewed and written about by authors and scholars. Feel free to stop by the Teahouse for further help, they can generally provide a second opinion or help you faster than I can. Thank you for wanting to improve Wikipedia. Word Affluent

Hi there, it's because it's an uncited term being used to non-neutrally describe the place. Newton isn't quite the Hamptons, per se, where the media and so forth have called it affluent. The way it works in Wikipedia - if it's called "affluent" or "wealthy" by the media and writers numerous times, then we can include it, with citations, in the article. Just saying "oh the median income is xx, that means it's affluent," doesn't necessarily mean it is - maybe for New England it's middle class - I don't know. Anyway, we have to have things cited - feel free to post those articles that talk affluent in their descriptions and I'll take a look at remove the word most likely. Thanks! It occurred to me last night that you might have been referring to the German language version of the page http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakyadhita part (1st paragraph) of which I used as reference. The rest of the article came from a past president of Sakyadhita and is strictly well established information about dates of meetings and conferences.

I'm at a loss to understand why it's so difficult to get this published, except to say that having more than one reviewer is confusing. So far, I've been accused of publishing "chick garbage" on the chat room; encouraged and helped by DCG when first I submitted; and then summarily deleted by you recommendation.

I'm willing to revise and am not going to give up unless I get a clear answer as to why this article would appear in the German Wiki, but not in the English Wiki.

Hope you're having a merry holiday and will answer when you can.

Someone replaced the almost completed article on Karen McCrimmon with my old one that is far more incomplete

Hello Sarah, Please help me because I am really exausted. I have been working like 10 hours a day on those articles on Karen McCrimmon. I am the main author of this article on Karen McCrimmon in English, and for some reasons the recent article I was signing Edgard Poe was replaced by the old one. I can understand how the error occured because at the same time I was writing one in French and my user's name was Edgard Poe and this have brought the mistake in the English one. Could you put the one I was completing today, on line, instead of the one that is there now and is far incomplete and has no references?

If there is a conflict between De Medicis and Edgard Poe there should not be because they are the same author and the same person and if you verify the e-mail address, you will see it is the same. If you have some other reasons to remove more than half of my article, could you explain why?

My article: Calculation Engine

Hi Sarah, I've seen today that my article with the topic "Calculation Engine" was refused for submission.

As I understand, one reason is the lack of reliable resources.

Actually, I couldn't yet find any resources defining a calculation engine. I have seen some articles (some noncommercial, some commercial) about some calculation engine examples and applications, but not a single article defining the term "calculation engine" properly.

I have my own articles and blogs as the only resources. But I didn't indicate them in the final submitted draft because that would be (as I understand) against the rules of Wikipedia.

I don't quite agree with your comment that my article was too technical. "Calculation Engine" itself is a technical and mathematical topic. I have seen much more technical articles in Wikipedia with lots of confusing technology names and initials. The article I wrote is intentionally a mathematical article; not a technological one.

I won't spend more time on this article for Wiki. I can publish it somewhere else. Maybe a seasoned Wiki editor can use it as a starting point, because the term "Calculation Engine" needs a proper definition, there is an information gap in internet.

Hi there. Sadly, Wikipedia doesn't allow content that is considered original research, so, if the concept for your subject doesn't quite exist, or is something you perhaps developed, then sadly it isn't "notable" enough yet - until it's written about, documented, and published about by multiple reliable sources. In regards to the technical aspect - while i am not a mathematician, and math certainty is not my speciality, if I was unable to figure out the basic concept behind the subject, it's too technical for Wikipedia. In theory, all content should be accessible to English speakers around the world - we try to keep things technical but understandable for say, students, or people just curious about subjects. Your content was pretty over my head! So anyway, regardless of the technical aspect - which is the least important concern - it's the notability issue. To say there aren't reliable sources documenting or defining the subject means that it might not be a notable subject, yet. You're welcome to resubmit, with more sources if you can find them, and see what someone else says. Or, feel free to stop by the Teahouse for further advise. Thanks for wanting to contribute to Wikipedia, and perhaps you'll find another subject that needs improvement (We have an entire project devoted to math, and lots of articles that need help).
