How you can help

Hello from Ireland

Thanks for leaving me a message on my page last year. Sorry I am only logging in now to see it. If you want to talk about U2 and Ireland we can trade contact details and I'll be happy to chat. I'm not sure if you made your trip here yet or not but if you did I hope you enjoyed it. Smithcool 23:39, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

That's bad you couldn't make the trip, hopefully you can soon. Many people here like U2 but not everyone. Yes you can give me your email and we can talk. You have a good taste in music :) Smithcool 20:26, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Where did you post it? Smithcool 16:07, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
<EDIT> Please, delete the address as soon as you take it. I might not reply to ur email inmediately cuz I'm at work and I have to go to another place after 16:30 to reply, but I surely will MissBono (talk) 17:35, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes I did get it, and emailed you. Smithcool 18:29, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button   or   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 17:54, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Please do not add or change content without verifying it by citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Theroadislong (talk) 17:35, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

One thing you have to understand is that Wikipedia is trying to be serious and formal, even in articles about popular music. It is not trying to be like IMDB and it is definitely not trying to be like a fan site. The things that end up in Wikipedia are things that come from mainstream general news sources like BBC News, CNN, Reuters, and The Irish Times, and mainstream music sources like NME, Rolling Stone and Billboard. Hope this helps. Wasted Time R (talk) 12:17, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Yes, you can use an interview in Rolling Stone magazine as a source for adding something to Wikipedia. But it has to be relevant to the article and not just personal trivia. For example, if Sarah Singer says her favorite color is yellow, that's not really important enough to include in a Wikipedia article. Everybody has a favorite color, listing it is great for a fan site but not important enough for here. But if Sarah Singer says her favorite color is yellow, and that her album cover art is often dominated by yellow, and the Rolling Stone writer notes that themes of sunlight and reason but also of warning are in her songs (all themes associated with yellow), then yes the favorite color is an important part of her work and all of that should be included in a Wikipedia article. Or to take quotations. You added a whole slew of Bono quotations to the article, in a single section without dates or origins or significance. That is not what Wikipedia is for. However, you can certainly put a quote here and there in the article text, to illustrate some aspect of the subject. For example, Bono has often been accused of being self-important. There's a great quote from one of his Rolling Stone interviews: "I'm sick of Bono. And I am Bono. It's like, oh, man, shut up. But there it is. You just don't want to be dull. We might be annoying. But we're not dull." That could certainly be included in the article. Hope this helps. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:33, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, Wasted Time, it sure helps. I'm glad you took some of your time to explain that to me. I'll try to improve. Love n' Peace//Only Love Can Heal Such A Scar// (talk) 13:18, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Username issue

I asked an administrator (MBisanz) for help with your confused username and the response was: You need to log into Wikipedia with your new username of "Miss Bono" (with the space) using the password of your old username (that is, the password of "Ali Hewson" the first time you created it). Hope this helps. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:29, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm really sorry but I'm not writing U2 content right now, as I'm busy with school, WikiProject Women Scientists, and WikiProject Constellations. But if you wanted a collaborator, I've got a project in the back of my mind. Let me know! :) Keilana|Parlez ici 02:34, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

U2 by U2

I want to add some references from this book -U2 by U2- but I don't know how to cite them. Can anybody help me? Miss Bono (talk) 13:55, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, it's not too hard. Use the {{Cite book}} template. Eg. {{Cite book|title=U2 by U2|publisher=HarperCollins|date=|ISBN=978-0-06-077674-9|author=Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr.}} gives Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. U2 by U2. HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0-06-077674-9.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list (link). Now just put "ref" tags around it <ref name="U2 by U2">{{Cite book|title=U2 by U2|publisher=HarperCollins|date=|ISBN=978-0-06-077674-9|author=Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr.}}</ref> and you can use it as a footnote.[1] To reuse it simply use the <ref name="U2 by U2" /> with the closing " /".[1]

References

  1. ^ a b Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. U2 by U2. HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0-06-077674-9.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list (link)

U2 Project

When projects die off it is generally from a lack of interest. However, sometimes all one needs to do is begin inviting others to the project by placing the project invitation template on the talk page of some of the relevant articles.

Another thing might be to revamp the project and add new graphics, barn stars and other edits that might ping the older participants back to help. If you have any question feel free to ask on my talk page.--Amadscientist (talk) 19:58, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

I will create two simple templates for you. One you can drop off at the older member talk pages and one you can place on the article talk pages to generate interest. Give about ten minutes please.--Amadscientist (talk) 20:24, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Where should I post the second template. Is it legal to post it on another wikipedian talk page? Regards.. Miss Bono (talk) 12:26, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes. Its perfectly legal and allowed to post templates on people's talk pages. What this template is doing is similar to typing a message for them yourself, and posting it there. Also, if anyone finds it disrupting, they can easily remove the template from their talk page (similar to how you can delete messages) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 12:33, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Searching for templates

Check out this link and see if this kind of searching will help. I think it should be enough to locate all the templates. Otherwise, I'll try and dig deep to see if there are specific pages, but I doubt it. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 17:03, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

I have answered your "Sources" question at the Teahouse. Also, can i request you to remove those questions of yours which are satisfactorily answered (and would require no further comments)? As you might not know, we deal with an excessively long Questions page already, and it would be nice if we could remove anything that can lower the burden. Plus, I am expecting a lot of questions from you. :) P.S. All new questions go to the top; not the bottom TheOriginalSoni (talk) 21:04, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Watch out for copying text from sources

In this edit here, you directly copied language from a source into a Wikipedia article. This happened in several places, for instance the Irish Independent story you used said:

But Eve persevered and signed up to New York University determined to prove her acting bug wasn't just a flash in the pan. After almost three years of acting classes, theatre production, theatre design and academic studies, she hopes to graduate this year, leaving her free to pursue acting full-time.

And you wrote in the Eve Hewson article:

Eve persevered and signed up to New York University determined to prove her acting bug wasn't just a flash in the pan. After almost three years of acting classes, theatre production, theatre design and academic studies, she graduated in 2013, leaving her free to pursue acting full-time.

That's word-for-word copying, and it's considered a violation of the newspaper and reporter's copyright, and is something you can't do. See WP:COPYVIO for the full details.

Instead, you have to summarize the material in your own words (or more rarely, directly quote the source). So for example, it would be okay to say something like this:

Determined to show she was serious about the profession, Eve was enrolled in a drama program at New York University for nearly three years. There she studied acting, theatre production, and theatre design, and graduated in 2013.

See the difference? We need to use own our words, not the words of the sources. Wasted Time R (talk) 13:17, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

WIKIPROJECT U2 DISCUSSION

Hello, I'm Theroadislong. I noticed that you recently removed some content from Ali Hewson without explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry: I restored the removed content. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Theroadislong (talk) 15:30, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
