Photographs of Georgia

I notice you have contributed some rather nice photographs to Wikipedia. There is a particular statue in Georgia that Wikipedia lacks a free use photograph of: the original Spirit of the American Doughboy is in Nashville, Georgia, facing East on the Northwest corner of Berrien County Courthouse Square – near the intersection of Marion Avenue and Davis Street, and can be seen on this page. A free photograph would be wonderful, I wondered whether you happened to have one in your collection or, if you ever happen to head out that way, you would be able to take one? Proper article titles

I see where you moved [1] Académie des Sciences to French Academy of Sciences with the reason: moving back to English name - this is the form most used in English.

I agree with you that we should adopt the form most used in English as there seems to be much confusion and contradiction with a number of Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia currently appears to have a large number of articles with their foreign language title, yet others that do not. Example: The University article Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala is in Spanish but the Spanish Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is labeled in English as the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

There are certainly rare cases where only the foreign name is commonly and exclusively used in English (here and elsewhere) such as the Tour de France. However, it seems somewhat ridiculous that the Wikipedia for the Tour de France links to the French Maillot jaune (Yellow Jersey), and the French Maillot blanc (White Jersey), but for the third "jersey" it links to the English titled article Polka dot jersey (maillot à pois rouges).

I found a "Category:Legion of Honor recipients" and used it but then found the article is Légion d'honneur and someone recently changed the Category to French titling. Both are French titles few would ever search for in an English encyclopedia, let alone attempt to spell. In this case, I did a little research to see what was being done elsewhere and note the following:

• The Embassy of France in the United States official title is "Legion of Honor" : [2] and also uses "Legion of Honor" in referencing. [3].
• The Consulate General of France in Boston uses "Legion of Honor" [4]
• The United States embassy worldwide refers to it as the "Legion of Honor"
• New York Public Library press releases and references refers to the "Legion of Honor" (See: Paul LeClerc, president and CEO of the NYPL who received the Legion of Honor in 1996).
• I found that these English-language institutions also used "Legion of Honor"

I would like to contribute to a variety of articles including those having Spanish origins but have been a little uncertain how to do it (SEE: Guatemala National Prize in Literature). Being new, I don't want to contradict or change the work of other more senior Wikipedia editors. However, it seems that mere handful of people can vote to change a category name so perhaps Wikipedia needs to enunciate a clear policy before it gets completely out of hand. As I'm not sure how or what to do, I thought because of your interest in the matter through your change in the Académie des Sciences to French Academy of Sciences, I would defer to your experience. Your wise insight needed!

Hi Mav! It has been quite a while since our editing paths haven't crossed. Seems like last time was back in the days when Wikipedia was still an obscure website and we all seemed to know each other. I hope that you are well. I am contacting you because there is something strange going on. If you have time, look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cast of Saving Private Ryan. I am very seldom involved in AfD discussions, but this time, I seem to be fighting alone against the "deletion squad". This is pretty much a random case, but I feel that it is quite important because if the article is deleted (or rather if the material of the article is erased), then it goes in spirit against what I believe Wikipedia should be, and would create a precedent. I had "created" this list last year and put it in the Saving Private Ryan article. Someone trimmed it down one day and I created this extra page in order to keep the information without making the main article too long. Now some users are voting to delete it. I consider this information as relevant and deleting it would be a strange precedent leading to a voluntary decrease of (relevant) information. I guess that a substantial portion of the content of Wikipedia could be deleted if the logic promoted by the advocates of the deletion was strictly followed. I could not find much about this topic in pages like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Precedents. I respect your opinion. You Started It

... the article on the Gold Standard, I mean - subsequently a Featured Article. That article (now huge) has become rather a football, presumably between "gold bugs" and people opposed to their views. I expect it has come to your attention a few times since that fateful day you began it.

I don't go back very far, either with the article nor with Wikipedia (but I AM old), but I had occasion a month or so ago to consult it, and I find it's become a cesspool of extraneous material that combines attacks on the (resurrection of the) gold standard with other, unrelated agendas (POVs of WP:NPOV Type 2). The article has also acquired an "owner" in the form of a user (not administrator) who peremptorily reverts any changes to the article not made by him. You'd spot him/her readily on the History page.

Wikitext

Thanks a lot for your complement on the Geology of the Grand Canyon article. When you say "please cite that in the wikitext," are you referring to just citing my sources in the article, references? I looked over the wikitext glossary and am not sure what you mean. I'm really a stickler in citing references but in this case I wasn't able to because the dates and boundary locations of the two island arcs (Yavapai and Mojave provinces) that collided with the Wyoming craton are still being disputed, so everything was in my own words, but summarized from the numerous journal articles that I have been reading. I also went up to the Grand Canyon to look at it personally and talked with the geologists there.

I plan on revising and updating the Vishnu Group further as soon as I can get more accurate data, and then these references will be cited. I will also be writing an article on the Wyoming craton and updating the Canadian Shield and American Craton articles. These will be more difficult because of uncertainties in the dates and boundary areas but they will be extensively cited.

A major drawback that I have in writing these articles - the craton articles - is the maps and diagrams. Do you know what programs I could learn to draw my own? Also, we seem to have common paths: I studied geology but am now taking courses in biology, microbiology, and genetics. I'm trying to gather more info on the isoprene signatures left by archaea microbes in early Archaean rocks, such as the Isua greenstone belt, ca. 3.83 Ga. --Valich 19:14, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Editing Kingdoms

Mav, I've just started work here, and I can only admire the wide range of your interests--I am limiting myself to things I already know something about , primarily biology and libraries (yes, I am a biology librarian). I've been working tonight on the "Kingdom" page, and I've put some talk there, but without changing the article. It seems that I need to look first at the overall organization of the biology pages, because they are of course all interrelated. There's a point to dividing up the work,, but not to working at cross purposes--and it does seem to me as a relative outsider that the WP method is extremely susceptible to cross purposes. The practical way of handling multiple points of view or multiple levels of knowledge seems to be multiple groups of pages with different titles.

Who should I ask?

I don't really know who to ask... you left me a welcome message on my talk back in 2003, and you seem to be around and informed about how things work around here. At least maybe you can point me to somebody else.

I have noticed a user who seems to be here with the sole purpose of promoting himself and his business. The account has less than 50 edits, the oldest one from December 2005. All or almost all of the edits are related to one specific real-life person and/or his business. The text on the user accounts also hints this is the same person as the only article about - not directly, you have to do a bit of searching. Some of the articles have not been created by this user, but by another user who is not here anymore - and whose contributions show exactly the same pattern, regarding topics. One might suspect that this probably the same real-life person. This is to old for a checkuser to be of any help, of course.

I have been thinking about this for months. Then, somebody else brought the article about himself, or the real-life person that I am confident is this user, to AfD. I put some links there including a link to his contributions etc, but it seems very few people have even looked at that AfD. If they did, they did not check it very thoroughly. I recently noticed he has created a separate article about a municipal election that will take place in November, very detailed with pictures of some of the candidates. Of course, he is one of the candidates.

I could have dropped half a dozen of links here on your talk, but I feel I will soon be accused of being a wiki-stalker and I suppose it might be better to wait until I find someone who feels this is worth looking into. // habj 05:32, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

A few editors have recently put a good deal of work into it and I think it is turning into a very well-researched, accurate, sophisticated article. The problem is, I think most members of the general audience will have trouble following it, or may even be turned off by the technical prose. Not having any formal training in biology I do not want to edit it because I fear I will screw something up. You however have a very long history of making articles on scientific thmes both accurate and readible. Perhaps your intervention now would be very helpful ... A request for assistance

Would you support the concept of moving the Earhart "myths" to a separate page or article? The reason for my suggesting this is that the main article should be an accurate and scholarly work while the speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart are interesting, they belong in a unique section. Most researchers, as you know, discount the many theories and speculation that has arisen in the years following her last flight. Hi Mav, sorry to bother you. If you have a moment (haha, I know) could you please have a quick look at this:

The issue is this horror story about a poisoned Russian spy, and whether it is OK for the article to give his address, where it's thought his widow and child/children still live ... living persons. privacy etc etc?? No strong feelings and no edit warring but just a concern about what is OK under policy - and my feeling that people like you probably know! Thanks for uploading Image:Racetrack Playa from space.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. Judging article importance using links in

Hi mav,

I seem to recall us chatting at the Boston Wikimania conference about judging importance of articles using an algorithm based on the no. of links in to that article. Was it you who suggested this idea? I am working with User:Martinp23 and User:eyu100 on this problem, and we are currently testing out importance assessment by bot using this approach. We hope later to refine the results based on the importance rating of those links-in. If it was you who suggested this, could you take a look at my initial proposal, and also at our project page and our bot trials, then give us some feedback? April Fool's Main Page 2007

Hi Mav. April Fool's Main Page 2007 project affects all five changeable sections on the mainpage. To have an April Fool's featured article appear on the mainpage on April 1st, some of the SA mainpage rules may need to be bent. Thus, the project may need the approval and agreed upon cooperation from those running the SA main page section. If would be great if at least one of the SA administrators agreed to be a point person for the SA aspect of the April Fool's Main Page 2007 project. Mostly, this would involve deciding which SA mainpage rules could be bent, reviewing proposed SA mainpage content to ensure it meets SA mainpage requirements, and ensuring that this content made its way to the mainpage on April 1st.
