Kahakō edit

Mark. How did you add the kahakō to Waimanalo in the Makapuu article? - Marshman 04:48, 16 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

When I edit pages, I have a box down at the bottom that says "Insert:" and has a whole bunch of accented characters, each of them individually linked via javascript. One of them is the o with a kahakō above it. When I click on it, it magically appears in my edit box. I am using Moxilla Firefox 1.0.6, if that makes any difference.
I thought that it said to do this on the Help:Special characters page, but it looks like the section I remember was moved into the Talk section, and I can't find the section I remember seeing where it talked about this special "Insert:" box.
In any case, I don't know if it's acceptable to insert the character directly or if it is better to use the ō like you do. What's your feeling? Markkawika 09:00, 22 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

How do you add in links? edit

How does one add in links? I tried to link in Irish Mint to Currency Centre, but I don't think I was successful. - (Aidan Work 06:09, 19 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

I reckon you're not right regarding capitalisation of currency units. edit

I still reckon that you're not right about whether or not to start a currency unit with a capital letter. Being a serious numismatist, with a very strong interest in British Commonwealth numismatics, I have always traditionally used a capital letter to start a currency unit. See my article Coins of Cyprus & you will see that the currency units start with capitals, as do the coins in this article Coins of Bophuthatswana. - (Aidan Work 07:13, 21 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

Template:Infobox Coin edit

I'm not an expert on templates nor css nor HTML. Can you explain to me why you changed what you did on the Template:Infobox Coin? Why did you make some things boldface that were not, some things a different size, etc.? I'm confused. Also, why didn't put some sort of comment on the Talk about describing why you did what you did? Also, I assume you renamed it due to an improper name. I have no problem with that, but I wish you had said something like "this is the proper name, as stated here" or whatever. Markkawika 22:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I changed the template to use a centralized "infobox" style which handles the right-side alignment and other visual elements. The row headers are now bold because they are now properly specified as header cells. This is really helpful in some browsers and screen readers because they can skim the headers without hearing all the content. The use of ! over | for headers is covered in meta:Help:Tables. As far as the naming, that is per Wikipedia:Infobox templates. Sorry if the changes seemed too shocking. I am performing a large number of such template/infobox improvements, and I try and keep things close to the original. -- Netoholic @ 22:20, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Shilling sign edit

The Shilling sign is '/-', not only in terms of currencies such as the Somaliland Shilling and the Ugandan Shilling, but the British Shilling as well. See the article Coins of Somaliland for further information. If you have any questions, ask me through my website; [[1]]. - (192.190.108.19 06:46, 4 May 2006 (UTC))Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:State-Quarters-Obv-Unc.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:State-Quarters-Obv-Unc.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:24, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Football hooliganism edit

Thank you for removing the in use tag I left on by mistake. In repsonse to this message in your edit summary, "Don't leave inuse tags on the page that long". I don't leave them on usually, it was a simple mistake, we all make mistakes at times. And I had been editing the article for a while and simply forgot that I had left it on by accident as I had intended removing it but forgot.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 15:20, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Joe Walsh - Look What I Did.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Joe Walsh - Look What I Did.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 21:05, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MarcCohn.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading Image:MarcCohn.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:44, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oahu Wiknic on June 23rd edit

Aloha! I am planning to set up an Oahu Wikinic for June 23, as described at Wikipedia:Wiknic

My Wikipedia user name is Peaceray, I started about 15 months ago, & I have about 2,500 edits on en.wikipedia.org. I have been hankering to meet with some fellow local Wikipedians, especially since a few of us live in Kailua. To that end, I am sending email to or posting on the user Talk pages of 19 of us from the Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Participants page who I could identify as possibly living on Oahu.

Please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Oahu/1 & Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Oahu/1

I am open to any of the locations mentioned in the post, or other alternatives. I am like-to-operate-by-consensus type of guy, any workable location on which we could soon decide would be great!

Image source problem with File:Eisenhower dollar reverse.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Eisenhower dollar reverse.jpg.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:27, 12 May 2014 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Looking for editors to help with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu edit

On Oahu? Edit Wikipedia or Wikimedia sister projects? You are invited to help the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu this September.

Aloha!

Last summer I moved to the Seattle area after 14 years in Kailua on Oahu. I immediately fell in with the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group as it formed, joined its board and became its first president as well as the GLAM representative for Washington State.

Recently, Adriel Luis, Curator (Digital & Emerging Media) at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, contacted me about setting up an edit-a-thon like the previous Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon. In addition to discussing one for Seattle, he wrote:

As I was working two jobs while I lived on Oahu, I did not have the opportunity to meet your or any other Wikipedians at the time. Hence, the reason why I am contacting you now.

If you would like to help, please contact me through one of these methods:

Mahalo,

2019 US Banknote Contest edit

  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
