Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Speedy deletion nomination of Islamabad United (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Islamabad United (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Discussion moved

I recently pinged you at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). The discussion has now been moved to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Massive wide-ranging IP block on Airtel India users. (However, in the light of what I have now seen of recent your editing history, or lack of it, it may not be relevant to you anyway.) JBW (talk) 17:33, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, JBW. I’m a bit late but I recall I was dealing with a particularly abusive LTA on this and other ranges. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 14:54, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Odd similar editing

Malcomxl5, see your query at this user's talk page about their odd edit summaries. The editor refers to some "training we are doing" where "they asked us to be editing this way". A new editor is doing the same: odd edit summaries,[1] and re-inserting some of the same deleted edits made by PassionateLibrarian. I'm not sure what to make of this or what to do about it ... perhaps some sort of course editing, so I'm not sure SPI is appropriate yet ? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:22, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Perhaps you or Explicit can indicate whether there is anything at the deleted User:Chinemeremprince/sandbox that explains the odd similarities? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:29, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi Sandy, I think the new editor is taking part in the 'Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos' (WPWPIG2023) competition organised on meta; see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WPWPIG2023. No sockpuppetry involved. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 14:41, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

User:Chinemeremprince/sandbox was a blank submission with standard edit summaries, so nothing there. I vaguely remember similar occurrences a year or two ago that used edit summaries similar to the ones used by Chinemeremprince. I don't remember where it was discussed, but it was some sort of contest on a sister project to add images to articles that needed them. Or something. I'm afraid that's as helpful as I can be on this matter. plicit 14:39, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks to both; that explains it all. Best regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:42, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open regarding amending the paid-contribution disclosure policy to add the following text: Any administrator soliciting clients for paid Wikipedia-related consulting or advising services not covered by other paid-contribution rules must disclose all clients on their userpage.

  Technical news

  • Administrators can now choose to add the user's user page to their watchlist when changing the usergroups for a user. This works both via Special:UserRights and via the API. (T272294)
