Hi Maky, I regret to inform you that I have it on good authority that the tarsiers of the world are somewhat miffed by some of your recent edits. It's no slight to tarsiers, trust me. Though I deeply respect and care about monkeys and apes, my heart lies with the "prosimians", primarily the strepsirrhines, but also the tarsiers. My recent edits have been not to defame tarsiers, but to save both them and the strepsirrhines as being mislabeled as "primitive" or "lesser evolved" primates—something the continued general use of the term "prosimian" helps perpetuate. The term is now best used to discuss similarities in behavioral ecology between the two groups, and I avoid it in the discussion of morphology since that tends to lead people to assume monophyly. Honestly, though, my next *BIG PROJECT* will be to re-write the Prosimian article, but that will have to wait until I can write a couple research papers of my own.

Less seriously, though, I get the hint—I would like to work on the Tarsier article. I have an entire book on them... though the authors were mostly in the camp of the archaic "prosimian primates are primitive" way of thinking, and some chapters are dedicated to attempting to link them to lemurs (by some of the same supporters of the Darwinius debacle). It might make for a good collaboration article... and maybe I can even use it to lure Ucucha back on to Wiki. (I'm having lunch with him tomorrow, coincidentally.) Regardless, would a collaboration interest you? Strangely enough, I was looking over Wikipedia:WikiProject Mammals/Collaboration earlier today and wondering if I should try to start it up again. – Maky ^« talk » 08:37, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Question: Garden of Words

Hello! Big fan of yours when I saw you totally revamp The Garden of Words page! I totally love the film, and watched when I first came out. I even saw how you kept updating the article, and you did a beautiful job on it! I wanted to ask a question because I was thinking about it when have the money for the DVD, but I wanted to ask something, too. On the article, it said that the Blu-ray version has longer interviews and bonus features? Since Sentai Filmworks licensed it, is the DVD and Blu-ray the same as the Japanese counterparts? If the Blu-ray actually has more features on it on its North American counterpart, I would like to know please! Also, I wanted to ask you something about the novel. I saw some posts on Tumblr, this one for example, that novel has been licensed in French. Thank you very much. From what I can tell, the Sentai Filmworks BD has everything but the 16-page booklet. I'm assuming the DVD also has a shorter version of the cast interviews, just like in Japan. As for licensing of the novel, I haven't seen anything. I've got a Japanese copy (which I can't read), and really wish they'd license it for the US. 16-page booklet? Does the DVD have it, too? Hmm... it doesn't sound like you're very sure about it. I checked the back images for the BD and DVD on Amazon, their bonus features seems the same. As for the novel, the link I posted was my second time seeing someone from France talking about the novel. I'm so jealous~! I wish it gets licensed, too! T _ T Also, may I ask another question? The only anime series I got from Sentai Filmworks is No. 6 and I don't know much about the differences between Blu-ray and DVD besides being on a different format. Does the BD really have better quality than the DVD? I have a series that has both BD and DVD in them, but I honestly can't tell the difference.

The 16-page booklet is something mentioned in the article. It apparently came with the Japanese version of the BD and DVD. My copy of the BD (North American release via Sentai Filmworks) does not have any booklets. Again, the difference in features on the disc, regardless of whether it was released in Japan or the US, is the duration of the interview in the Extras, I think. As for Blu-ray (BD) vs. DVD, yes, BD is generally much higher resolution than DVD. However, for anime, the differences may not be noticeable. For a film with as much detail as the The Garden of Words, there might be a difference... but you won't see it unless you're playing it on a very high-resolution display, and even then it may take a trained eye to see the difference. For ordinary film, yes, there is a visible difference. Ultimately, BD will probably replace DVD, so keep that in mind. – Maky ^« talk » 10:24, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you very much for sharing the sources! Unfortunately, this runs into a wonderful gray area where I may or may not be able to use them as sources for the article. Technically, Facebook cannot be used as a source, but since it's the official company releasing news, and because they're not making the same announcement on their official website, I might be able to get away with it. I'm going to have to take a closer look over the next few days. But like you, I hope they license and release it in North America. Besides wanting to read the novel, I also need to document the differences between the film and the novel in the article. I just looked more closely, and the images in those FB posts show the DVD and BD releases, not the novel. The French link, which mentions the "novel", seems to show the DVD, BD, and the translated manga. I don't know what's shown in the first link you provided, but I can't find any other evidence of a licensed edition of the (text) novel. I'm pretty sure the link to the person on tumblr isn't confusing the novel with the manga. Just because the front cover looks similar doesn't make it so. It's defiantly the novel. I saw at least two people so far that mentioned they got the novel. And The Facebook wouldn't lie, either, considering it's from the company. Well, anyway... Thanks for your help. I do hope Vertical or some other company licenses the novel, too.

I stand corrected about the French edition. However, I stand by what I said for the Spanish and Italian material. The FB post clearly shows a Spanish DVD and BD, and the top item on the Italian side is clearly a DVD or BD case. The bottom image is probably a BD. The caption does not say anything about the novel, and seems to imply these are translations of the film. Actually, I don't think I'm going to add the French translation information to the article. I believe the article should focus on the original material (Japanese) and English translations (since this is English Wikipedia). I don't think we're obligated (or even encouraged) to provide information about every single non-English translation. But I will remember this conversation, and if further review of the article requires adding this content, I will return to this discussion for sources. Seems like perhaps some DNA work could be done based on those finds? So yeah, better get the article up to shape to tie in with the inevitable "Lemuric Park"! Perhaps I should tweak the image a bit, made it before I got a real hang of painting digital fur... I'm sure Godfrey would love to see a tweak to the image, as would I. I know that she was very happy with all the subfossil lemur art we made. I wonder if we should tackle a few more... like Mesopropithecus. Unfortunately, I think the giant aye-aye would be impossible to reconstruct given the lack of material. But maybe we could use the outline of an aye-aye and show a scaled-up version to demonstrate its size (also comparing it to a human, like I did at Gray mouse lemur...

As for the re-write, it may come later this year. I have my own research to work on publishing first. I really need to write an article about "lemur myths" so I can make my life easier when dealing with the wonky things researchers commonly say about lemurs in the literature, and then I want to try to publish an interesting piece on primate cognition. I also need to finish up "part 2" for the etymology paper I published earlier with Ucucha and Colin Groves. Maybe if I need a break I'll visit the article. Update

Just a note on the Grandidier book... I've been pretty busy with offline stuff the past few days, doing some fairly major work on my mom's car. I think I told you I had gotten all the individual pages as PDFs... I've since extracted all the 'images' from the PDFs into bitmap files. Google (the original source of the scans) is a bit lazy, they don't actually 'embed' their watermarking into the page scan, they just have images of the watermark included in the PDF that display on top (stacked)... which means that extracting the images gives you 'clean' pages scans. I could go ahead and convert them to djvu right now, but I'm taking the slightly 'extra' step of running them through a utility called 'unpaper' that removes any 'skew' of the text and centers it on the page (instead of right and left pages looking different) so that it will OCR cleaner. I'll probably have it all back together and uploaded in the next couple of days, depending on how much work I am able to do on the car (it's been very rainy on and off). And... le sigh. Problem. I have it completely converted to a djvu, ready for upload, but then started checking the details for the file page... though it was published in 1922, and is thus is unquestionably PD in the US (it's too old for any URAA issue) the author died in 1948. Since French copyright terms are 70 years after the death of the author, that means it's not PD in the 'source country', which is an issue for Commons. I can completely legally mail it to you, or put it up somewhere like the Internet Archive, but it's not going to be acceptable on Commons until the French copyright runs out in 2019. I'm not sure if the French Wikisource has different rules that would allow it to be uploaded locally, but I will ask. Revent^talk 03:48, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Free lemur photos

A Flickr user has uploaded a lot (three pages) of nice photos of various wild lemurs (and other animals) taken on a trip to Madagascar in 2014, perhaps some of them are useful: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nomissimon/albums/72157649310062289 At least the aye aye photos are better than any of those we had already. To clarify: using the {{sfn}} template requires no changes between same-named usage. Because the |loc= was different for many of them (the timestamp was different), the refs did not work properly. Okay, I can see that (not the weird error you're getting, but that the link doesn't jump you down the page), but if it's not done the way I did it, it gives big, ugly red errors where the refs are listed in the ref section. @Nihonjoe: Looking back in the history, I do see one broken ref (#46) that got introduced at some point... but all the other refs that you tweaked worked just fine for me. Sorry, I've been multitasking, and now I've had time to look more closely. I see the problem and understand. Let me look into it. I don't recall that error being there when it went through GAN, and the refs hadn't changed since then. It might have been a change in the sfn template. To be honest, you'd have to check out the source (the original manga) for yourself. I had help with the translation, and I tried to stay true to what was written. I might still have the translation notes, but I would have to spend a while tracking it down. FAC voluntary mentoring scheme

During a recent lengthy discussion on the WP:FAC talkpage, several ideas were put forward as to how this procedure could be improved, particularly in making it more user-friendly towards first-time nominees. The promotion rate for first-timers at FAC is depressingly low – around 16 percent – which is a cause for concern. To help remedy this, Mike Christie and I, with the co-operation of the FAC coordinators, have devised a voluntary mentoring scheme, in which newcomers will guided by more experienced editors through the stages of preparation and submission of their articles. The general format of the scheme is explained in more detail on Wikipedia: Mentoring for FAC, which also includes a list of editors who have indicated that they are prepared to act as mentors.

Would you be prepared to take on this role occasionally? If so, please add your name to the list. By doing so you incur no obligation; it will be entirely for you to decide how often and on which articles you want to act in this capacity. Loeris isn't clown in Dutch

Hy Alex,

as discussed on Youtube Loeris has no meaning of clown in Dutch. Not now and not in history (source Dictionary of the Dutch Language, Woordenboek der Nederlandse Taal). The only place it is mentioned in the article of the Slow Loris is in this passage:

The earliest known mention of a slow loris in scientific literature is from 1770, when Dutchman Arnout Vosmaer (1720–1799) described a specimen of what we know today as N. bengalensis that he had received two years earlier. The French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, later questioned Vosmaer's decision to affiliate the animal with sloths, arguing that it was more closely aligned with the lorises of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Bengal.[18] The word "loris" was first used in 1765 by Buffon as a close equivalent to a Dutch name, loeris. This etymology was later supported by the physician William Baird in the 1820s, who noted that the Dutch word loeris signified "a clown".

I can't say that this passage is incorrect, because it says a British physician noted this meaning. I'm sure he did, the source seems trustworthy. All I can suggest is adding a sentence stating that this is probably a misunderstanding or a translation error. Loeres is old dutch for a softy or dolt, a person of limited intelligence or lorejas, which is old Dutch for conceited twerp.

Primate taxonomy

Hi Maky. I see you have been quite inactive of late. I hope you are well. I left a long note on the primate talk page about our primate taxonomy, on which I would like your feedback. We have long used Groves (2005) as our basic source for primate taxonomy, but I think that developments over the past 10-15 years have left this reference far behind, which even Groves acknowledges. We have slowly and somewhat haphazardly updated our primate taxonomy as new research has been published, but I think it is time to acknowledge that we need a new primary source. My preference would be to use Mittermeier, et al (2013) Handbook of the Mammals of the World, volume 3, but I could see using Rowe, et al (2016) All the World's Primates if there is a consensus for that, or there may be another possible source I am not aware of. In any case I would like to get your feedback on this, and the resulting changes that could be necessary (e.g., revising common names). Rlendog (talk) 18:22, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

@Marie Salichon: I'm not Trappist the monk, but I can offer some feedback. Overall, I'm impressed with your work. In particular, you cite your sources and use proper citation templates. You've added a lot of valuable material, and most of what needs to be done involves clean-up. First of all, I'd advise running your work through a grammar checker of some kind. I noticed several sentence fragments, such as "Measuring up to 30 meters" and "The Adansonia rubrostipa also known as fony baobab." Although you want to be careful not to plagiarize and aim to paraphrase, try to weave the material together into an objective narrative rather than simply stating fact after fact. Some parts of the article are little more than lists. (See the Manual of Style regarding lists.)

The sections also don't need so many subheadings, especially when they're only a few sentences or a single paragraph in length. If people want to read about lemurs, they'll easily find them under the "Fauna" section. Anyway, lemurs are mammals, so having two separate subheadings is contradictory. Also, there's no need for putting citations, such as "(Baum, 1995)" in the text, and statements such as "According to [7]" need to be spelled out. Otherwise, there are other minor issues. Geographical coordinates can stay in the infobox and don't need to be mentioned in the body, scientific names should be italicized, and units of measurements would benefit from the use of the Convert template.

I forgot to mention: The introduction of the article could be a bit longer. It generally doesn't require citations as long as it summarizes cited information from the body of the article. Thank you today for the article, introduced by Ucucha (in 2010): This was the largest carnivore known from Madagascar, large enough to eat some of the giant extinct lemurs. We don't know much about it, except that it was quite big and that it is probably no longer there.
