Are you sure that Image:Regiomontanus.jpg is in fact an image of Regiomontanus (1436–1476)? It doesn't look much like Image:Johannes_Regiomontanus.jpg, and I don't think they had photography in the 15th century? Hello Kils

Just would like to state that i have very much enjoyed being involved in a project of this nature. To see the speed of co-operation between various people was (Uwe, Lupo and Salleman and all others) fantastic. It was a complete buzz to go off researching about a scientific subject and coming to some understanding and appreciation of a creature that i would have no knowledge or interest in otherwise. I would like to say that it takes a damn good teacher to get others interested in what they teach and i for one, if only in a rudimentary and general way have found the subject of Krill and sorrounding issues of ecology and environment fascinating. I think that says a lot about your willingness to let others participate in something which you obviously have great knowledge in and could easily have been a lot less humble with. At some point i will put up some informtion on my home page so at least people know a little more about me. Am going to try to extend the article on Ice-algae so any info you may have would be good. I hope the article on Antartic Krill gets featured as i think it is now very good.

Wikiversity sounds like a good idea but will need more time to go through the proposal (not too sure what help i could be).

1911

I annotated 50 in the biggest undone category. This is actually useful, in that it gives one an idea of what to expect, and once you get into it, becomes easy to do. The whole idea was to find done articles under another name, and a few did pop up. --FourthAve 07:11, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Tertiaries is the big find. Some of the EB stuff is useless, other of it gets transwikified into the dictionary. Somebody now gets to do a big hand-pruning.

I moved Terramara to Terramare culture, the modern name. I also somewhat modernized the article from material at hand; there is also a sexy graphic I stole from the Urnfield site. I've been annotating again tonight.--FourthAve 06:49, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

I just discovered this list too. I'm not quite sure how I'll use it, but certainly, I'll use it as a guide to cherry pick the more obvious undone articles. The present 2004 list has lots and lots of unpromising gazetteer entries, particularly those of the British Raj; similarly, dictionary entries and 100-year-old ethnological references: I've been annotating these for what they are. As you may notice, I've also been careful to note where other-named wiki-articles are found. When I do an article, I try to add appropriazte categories (otherwise the article is pretty much an 'orphan'. This list should probably be at least re-arranged to separate the promising articles from the unpromising. Question: are my annotations helpful? And see this template (know anything about it, should I use it?):

Me again

Hi Magnus, I have generated a list of microsoft encarta articles from the website, (it contins 40,000 entries, even though they claim 60,000, I assume because they havent published everything on the net or not all 60,000 are encyclopedic). Anyway, as you created Wikipedia:List of encyclopedia topics, I was wondering how you got around the problem of names being the wrong way around (e.g. Smith, David rather than what we want; David Smith), and also if you have any wizardry to quickly remove all the thousands of blues?

Additional Crosses - Encarta/Britannica X Music/Jewish/Science/Catholic

Thanks again for your crosses Magnus, it has made identifying topics of interest much easier and has generated lots of interest. Have you thought about crossing some of the other "Descendent Projects" such as the Jewish or Catholic Encyclopedia with Encarta or Britannica? There is certainly enough material, the Jewish has over 15,000 entries and the Catholic has over 12,000 entries. The music encyclopedia has over 46,000. These projects have been languishing a bit because of the scope is so large and most people may not know where to begin. A cross would really help the projects get off the ground. Pruning lists

In the the crossover lists like Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles/2004xEncarta it sais "This list will be updated automatically". Is this still true, since the original lists are deleted? Thanks, --J heisenberg 16:24, 16 September 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia/Project Gutenberg links

Thanks for your work at Wikipedia:Project_Gutenberg_author_list. I am interested in also helping to increase the number of links to wikipedia from the Project Gutenberg catalog (of which I am an editor). A little work has been done to do this in a systematic way, but so far it has only gone through the first couple letter of the alphabet, and is quite slow and tedious. Ok, I'll address a few issues here, as raised on my Talk page. First, you've asked about automatic generation of a PG author list in "wikipedia notation". At the Project Gutenberg Feeds section of the website, one can find all the catalog information in rdf/xml format. Author names could be generated from that. However, there are consistency issues. Not all author names are in the form "Last, First Middle" For example, some pseudonyms have [pseud.] added after the name, some languages use different conventions for name order, some author names have been made to use the same form as found at the Library of Congress catalog, which sometimes uses older conventions with honorifics such as "Sir", "Lady", or "Prince".

And yes, I have only been adding complimentry links when I have checked to be sure that the author in question is actually the same person.

It is perhaps also worth noting that not all the authors represented in Project Gutenberg are encyclopedia-worthy. There are many for whom it would difficult to find out anything about other than their names.

No, we do not make biographies of authors at Project Gutenberg. I belive any effort to do so could not be as thorough as the present method of linking to wikipedia as a means of providing such biographical material.

Specifically, I was interested in some way of noting what Wikipedia articles you have added a project gutenberg author template to, so that I can make a corresponding link to that article from the Project Gutenberg online catalog, if it does not exist already. I tried going through your edit history and picking these out, but I wonder if some better method could be worked out.

Also you may want to note that not every name in the catalog is neccessarily an "author". For example Francis Turner Palgrave is only listed as the editor of a book of poetry by Robert Herrick, so it might be misleading to have a link stating "Books by Francis Turner Palgrave"

Also, in an example such as Ovid, I did not add a gutenberg author template as the external links section of the article already contains a link to the PG text, with a good description of it.

Also, I note that you have been adding some gutenberg author templates under a heading "Weblinks". Is there some reason you prefer that over the prevailing name for such a section (at least in en.wikipedia) of External links?

Yes, you can find a decent amount of biographical material in the texts at Project Gutenberg. There are some texts which are entirely biographical in nature; and there are also many which contain a brief biography of the main author at the beginning. In my personal experience, trying to locate, edit, and re-write this material for inclusion in a wikipedia article is a labour intensive process.

Thank you for "being bold" and creating category:Gutenberg author list to assist me. However, as I look at it, I don't think it's useful for my purposes. One issue is that it is sorted by first name instead of last name, but I don't think that is possible to change. Also, as you point out one can get the same list just by doing a "what links here" for the template. I don't like the extra clutter added to the list of categories. Unless you have objections, I propose to delete this category.

I have already spent many hours checking many dozens of authors' names for wikipedia articles. If I were to go through a list as mentioned above, I would be redundantly checking most of those names all over again. What I was interested in was some method of reviewing a list of wikipedia articles to which you (or others) have recently added template:Gutenberg author.

I agree with you that an external link in the nature of "Works by so-and-so" is better than a list of links to individual works. This keeps the external links section more tightly focused on the subject of the article and does not require updating to stay in sync with titles at PG.

Thanks for the 'compare' links. As for Andrew Sly's comments above, why don't we keep a list of PG author names and corresponding Wikipedia article names? Something like:

John M. Smith, J. M. Smith
Sir Charles Bligh, Charles Bligh

Then every week or two Andrew (or whomever) can just grab the list of what links to {gutenberg author ...}, filter out entries already in our PG<->Wikipedia list, then double-check and add any new entries not in the list. Womble 15:38, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Just an update here. I've followed up on the idea of keeping my own local list of wikipedia articles which contain template:gutenberg author. I suspect that might work best in the end, rather than asking other users to take extra steps to let me know about pages to link to. I've also got a list of all the external links from the PG online catalog, so I've been keeping busy by comparing that to the first list I mentioned and just focusing on the names that don't show up in both. Sigh. Two very old images without sources

I was startled to see your name on the list of people with unsourced images, but it turns out there are (at least) two: Image:Lorenzo II de Medici.jpg and Image:Kuno_Fischer.jpg. Both uploaded in 2002, probably really old, i.e. out of copyright, but they don't have a source. I've removed the no-source tag, but it would be great if you could rememeber where they were from. Dictionary of New Zealand Biography

I've just finished importing this, but would like to place google links next to each name. The only problem is the spaces in the name have to be replaced with + or %20 for the links to work. Have you done this sort of thing before?
