Re:Moving some maps to Commons

Tag small ones with Template:Duplicate than move large ones? I guess that somebody empties Category:Duplicate Wikipedia files using some kind of tool (at least it happens this way on Commons) Bulwersator (talk) 14:49, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

File at CCI

Your bot added a CCI template to File:DenizliHorozu.gif. Isn't it pointless to add CCI templates to unfree files? The CCI template is normally supposed to tell that a free file might have a falsified source or licence, but if the image already is listed as unfree, there is not really anything to do. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:46, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Hm... I really do not remember why... I think I excluced non-free files. Perhaps if someone uploaded a lot of non-free files that does not qualify for fair use then it would be nice with a check? Feel free to remove if you see files tagged wrongly. --MGA73 (talk) 21:52, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah... Wikipedia:Contributor_copyright_investigations/Cretanforever#Images: "For non-free images, determine whether each image meets our non-free content criteria. " . :-) --MGA73 (talk) 21:53, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

File:DanChallis.jpg

According to non-free content review, this image fails NFCC. Shall I tag it with "di-disputed fair use"? --George Ho (talk) 23:14, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes that would be fine. You could also choose FFD if you are in doubt. --MGA73 (talk) 05:39, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Help with deleted files

Can you help me with some deleted files, that might not actually be copyright violations? I've already asked and twice reminded the admin who deleted them, Future Perfect at Sunrise (talk · contribs), without a response on these. They are File:Lord Hill Minister.jpg and File:Nick Gibb Minister.jpg (which may be exactly the same as File:Lord Hill 2.jpg and File:Nick Gibb 2.jpg) as well as File:Michael Gove Minister.jpg, File:Sarah Teather Minister.jpg, and File:Tim Loughton Minister.jpg which appear to be different from those currently on Commons, but I can't tell. I'll keep track of them and promptly move them to Commons or ask you to delete them; for more explanation see the several threads on the OGL on User talk:Future Perfect at Sunrise/Archive 26. Thanks in advance, —innotata 16:29, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi!
Hope that can help you. --MGA73 (talk) 17:12, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Are the actual deleted files the same as the ones on Commons, not just the sources? Are the last three larger resolution versions of the images on the linked pages? (It should be easier to find the actual source if I could get them for those three; they should be clear on copyright despite some incorrect claims on the copyright page.) —innotata 17:29, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
The first two are the same (same resolution). I undeleted the last 3 temporary so you can see. --MGA73 (talk) 17:33, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks. It'd be good to get the exact source, but as far as I know, in this case if the low res versions are free the high res ones are, so on second thoughts I'll move them to Commons. It's possible they'll be deleted and less likely I'm wrong. —innotata 17:55, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Michael Gove's was never uploaded on Commons, but the other two are up now and can be deleted, I've tagged them with nowcommons. Thanks for the help. —innotata 18:03, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Good... All deleted again. --MGA73 (talk) 18:09, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

You might consider filing a regular image DR on this image at wikipedia and note the original source of the copy vio. The image at Commons has been deleted I see but someone could still 'accidentally' move it to Commons one day. The wikipedia uploader reverted your edits. I want to nominate my uploads for deletion, but it must be FFD. TonyTheTiger accuses me for deleting them in an improper way, like WP:G7. Have I violated deletion agreements? --George Ho (talk) 14:49, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

No, I do not think so. But it seems that someone would like to have them on FFD so let them have it that way. Once the FFD is closed it should hopefully be clear when files are not eligible for fair use. --MGA73 (talk) 19:39, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
In other words, db-g7 does not violate. Anyway, may I nominate them right now? --George Ho (talk) 22:47, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Editor review/George Ho

I created a request of editor review on me. Just to let you know. --George Ho (talk) 23:13, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Your mentorship with me

In the past years, I had very little interest in improving Wikipedia. In fact, I've hurt people more than I did not intend, and I was a fanatic deletionist. However, since I was unblocked with mentorship agreements, I thought I could do anything I want, but then I realize there is more to helping the cause than just stand there and do nothing except nominating for deletion. In fact, I have to reluctantly agree with terms, and so far I have interests in improving pages about topics more than just deleting material. Lately, I have requested renaming of Chandra Levy, and I created season pages, like Cheers (season 6), and improved Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal.

However, I haven't used User talk:George Ho/Mentorship discussions for half a year (or something like that) because I no longer have interest in recklessly requesting deletion on things that need a lot of improvement. Neverthless, I think that List of Curb Your Enthusiasm directors must go. Lately, I've not been receiving replies. I would hope that the page is in your watchlist, isn't it? I wonder if you want to continue as my mentor. If not, then surely I can find your replacement if necessary.

Note: This post is intended for only active and semi-active people. --George Ho (talk) 06:03, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. As you might have noticed I have not been active on English Wikipedia for quite some time so I will probably not notice any changes on User talk:George Ho/Mentorship discussions. So if possible I suggest you find a more active mentor :-) --MGA73 (talk) 18:42, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Keith Vivian Alexander.jpg

Hi MGA73, sorry for the very slow reply, but I am not usually a very active member of Wikipedia. I do have all intention of following the rules and regulations of the site. Hence at the time of uploading of the image I had asked and received Keith's personal permission for use of his photo on Wikipedia. This was back in 2008, before the requirement for submission of permission to permissions-en wikimedia.org existed (as far as I was aware). The trouble now being that I no longer have the original email after such a long time. What would be the correct steps to be able to reinstate the photo? Cheers Pmi25 (talk) 11:22, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

I do not know when it was first required to send permission to OTRS but Template:OTRS permission is from 2006 and I checked a version from 2007 of Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission and there was an request to send the permission to OTRS. I also do not know how many users knew the template and the page I mentioned but it was probably not many :-(
Anyway I'm not sure if a permission for the person in the picture (Keith) is enough because it is not sure that he is the copyright holder. The university could be the copyright holder.
Commons have at Commons:Commons:Grandfathered old files a guideline that says that files from before 2006 can be kept but this file is from 2008. Perhaps you could ask on WP:UDEL? Perhaps someone knows if there is something similar on en.wiki.
Another option is to ask the university for a new permssion. --MGA73 (talk) 14:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Yes I confirm it was my own work. The outline and Regional boundaries are a derivative work of File:Scotland1974Numbered.png. If you wish, you can move it to Wikimedia Commons and include it in Commons:Category:Maps of Scottish districts 1975 (or I will add it to Commons under my own name and you can then request deletion of the Norwegian copy).--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 06:56, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Files on Wikivoyage with a different name

Hi. About 30% of the remaining NowCommons WTS Wikivoyage files are now under a different name. I do not know what to do with them when they are marked Wikivoyage:ImageUsage, Wikivoyage:NotMovedInUse, etc. Can you clarify? Magog the Ogre (tc) 04:18, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Also, see [1]. Outdoor sculpture, no FOP, but a Danish-speaking artist with an obvious internet presence. Right up your alley to ask for permission and send to OTRS. :) Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:40, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi Magog the Ogre. Thank you for your amazing work on WTS!!!
I think we should first delete all files with the same name. Many of the files left is probably not easy. Your tool seems to put the crappy files at the end :-D
Then we (or I) could work on the files with a different name. It is much easier for me to check and fix the file info on Commons with your tool. It is now almost 3 years since we migrated the files to Commons I do not think it is still usefull to keep the files on WTS once they are checked. I worked on a few and if no file excisted on Commons then I added a redirect. If you think it is usefull with redirects then perhaps you could add a button so I can add it with one click.
I also think we should delete the files with FOP issues. WTS does not have fair use and if a local Wikivoyage have fair use they can always find the file on Wikitravel.
I will write a mail about the Danish file (if I can find the owner/artist). --MGA73 (talk) 14:42, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
My plan is to leave a note on the Wikivoyages that they should have a fair use rationale. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:13, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre: But there is really no active users on WTS so no one will add a rationale and as far as I know then you can no longer use the files on WTS on a wikivoyage project. So we will just end up with unused unfree files with no rationale? --MGA73 (talk) 09:16, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
No, I mean at the local projects where the original file is being used. Magog the Ogre (tc) 18:38, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes that is a good idea. Inform them that the file is unfree and will be deleted on Commons and if they would like to keep it they should make a copy etc. --MGA73 (talk) 19:03, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
OK, well I still don't know what to do with the files which are marked with those templates (first question above). Just delete them? Go to the local projects and relink them? (???) Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:45, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Nevermind. I figured it out on my own. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:51, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
OK, I've gotten all the files that I can. A lot of files I marked ignore need to get deleted on Commons. A few files need to have old versions transferred to Commons (I can't; I'm blocked). A bunch of files are for Wikivoyages we don't have, and their incubator pages aren't imported from Wikitravel. Chinese was started from scratch without Wikitravel imports. Magog the Ogre (tc) 05:14, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
Magog the Ogre If the version on Commons is better/larger then I normally go to Wikitravel/Wikivoyage and change the name and then I delete. If possible I also make a redirect on Commons.
I'll upload the old version to Commons and fix the description for the rest of the files.
Then there is the files marked with ignore "FOP issues etc.". I guess I'll just nominate a few of those for deletion on Commons once and a while.
Perhaps we could move some of the remaining files to Commons. But it will probably take a long time to find the good files. So perhaps we should just leave a message on en.wikivoyage asking active users to check their own uploads if there is some left on WTS they would like to move.
Once all done there is also some on en.wikivoyage-old - or whatever the name is :-D - so we could check/delete those also. --MGA73 (talk) 17:13, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
I had no idea we could use Commons files on Wikitravel. Wish I'd known; I would have made updates to their site for the files I already deleted. Magog the Ogre (tc) 18:30, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
We can't know everything Magog :-D --MGA73 (talk) 19:46, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Uploads of images by Stephen Parascandolo

Hi MGA! I recently ran across uploads credited to this individual (such as File:Beddington Lane layout.gif and many more) and saw this message from you on the uploader's talk page. You wouldn't happen to remember anything about that conversation, would you? It's been a long time. Kelly hi! 09:52, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Kelly I found a copy of the mail:

"You have not been active on Wikipedia for some time so I send you this message per e-mail.

You have uploaded a lot of nice images (http://toolserver.org/~daniel/WikiSense/Gallery.php?wikifam=.wikipedia.org&wikilang=en&order=-img_timestamp&img_user_text=Web+kai2000&max=25&ofs=0&max=25).

The file mention Stephen Parascandolo as author and links to http://www.croydon-tramlink.co.uk/

Just to be sure are you Stephen Parascandolo or have you been granted a permission from Stephen Parascandolo to use the files?

Hope to hear from you soon."

It seems I never got an answer. MGA73 (talk) 19:07, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, MGA73. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Minor fixes to userscripts

Hey MGA73, it looks like you've got a user script in use by others that has bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. The page is User:MGA73/movetocommonsreview.js; I can take care of cleaning them up for you if you like, just let me know! ~ Amory (utc) 13:02, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

@Amorymeltzer: You are very welcome to fix it. I do not use it anymore and I do not know if any one else does. Now files can be moved with FileImporter it may be less relevant to do a review. --MGA73 (talk) 14:37, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
