A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks) edit

Hey, Mário/archive3, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

A question edit

A while back I translated the Carmona Rodrigues article, and I was unsure about this, so I thought you would be the person to talk to...

Is the "President of the Municipal Chamber of Lisbon" (Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa) the same as being the "mayor" (Prefeito) of Lisbon? (Does Portugal really have "mayors"?) The Lisbon article calls him the "mayor". I used both titles in the Rodrigues article. Your thoughts? Grandmasterka 06:54, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Names edit

As above, great work! One point though, taking Paranhos, Porto as an example, do you think it's best to Anglicize place names and not mention the original name? Hospital Sao Joao translates as St. John Hospital, but I would probably go for the original name, possibly with an English version in brackets like: "Hospital Sao Joao (St. John Hospital)" when referring to it, that's what I'm used to seeing in travel guides and most literature about other countries. What do you think? Deizio 13:28, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I know what you're saying, people and places in a newspaper report about a foreign country would be translated (Like at home the paper would say "King Juan Carlos of Spain", or "the Eiffel Tower") but I think when describing the places in an area for information, the local name and a translation should both be present if possible. My first thought was that the conventional translation to English would be St. John's Hospital, see St Mary's Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and others at the List of hospitals in the UK.

Portugal Template edit

The Portuguese template is mostly modeled after the Massachusetts template. I structured the template after Portugal's districts and N.U.T.S., according to the Political divisions of Portugal page on Wikipedia. The template is essentially meant to provide better convenience of information to everyone that is browsing information about the country's political geography. Although, there might be revisions needed to it, such as the color of the boxes and the political divisions of the country. Most certainly, you're welcomed to revise the template in any such way to better it, like providing precise information about the country. Thank you for your time!

Zeca Afonso edit

I did a search for motor nuerone disease and football - in the university years section it clearly states

from 1946 to 1948 he finished high school, after two prior attempts failed due to his chaotic lifestyle spent among the older students. He met Maria Amália de Oliveira, whom he married secretly due to his parents' opposition. He travelled with some of the most important university musical groups and played football for the Associação Académica de Coimbra.

So, I think an apology is due as the article clearly states he WAS a footballer (though this may not have been as a profession) Ianguy 12:17, 4 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Renaming edit

A, I've proposed the renaming of Grande Área Metropolitana do Porto to Greater Porto. The latter currently redirects to the former, along with several other variations on the name, and I feel that having the regular, simple English form as the main page makes sense. There is a survey on the article talk page. If it goes through I can use AWB to simplify all the redirects.

Speaking of AWB, I've been changing a lot of Oporto links to Porto, and I think you've done a couple as well? Just makes sense, "Oporto" was never more than a historical typo and everyone calls it Porto. I'm not about to change every link, but I think modern references to the city can certainly be changed. Deizio talk 19:30, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's officially both, for example I have friends here who frequent the "Oporto Tennis & Cricket Club", and of course the airport code is OPO, but "Oporto" is becoming archaic relatively quickly. I don't meet many people, here or in the UK who know it as anything except Porto. Deizio talk 21:59, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Porto news edit

  • Thanks for the star, like you I really enjoy getting real content in the encyclopedia, and I managed to get Funicular dos Guindais in the Did you know? section on the front page yesterday which is great. Excellent job on turning all the parishes blue on the template. Deizio talk 10:37, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • You have to nominate articles, which must be a) less than 5 days old (day of original creation, not last update or time of listing) and b) well written and longer than a stub, at Template talk:Did you know and hope it gets picked. Updates usually happen once a day. Getting Porto to featured article status is something to aim for as well. Deizio talk 11:08, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Parish article titles edit

I wrote a note on the talk page of Template:Parishes of Lisbon without realizing that you created it. The titles of the parishes in the template are all "Parish, Municipality" while the ones we've done for WP:OPO (and all the ones I see on the Pt. Wikipedia) are "Parish (Municipality)". We need to decide which format we're using for all the parishes NOW before we fill in too many of them. (For example, the Porto template has São Nicolau (Porto) while the Lisbon template has São Nicolau, Lisbon.)

I've worked on a couple pages on Neighborhoods of Minneapolis. The standard for that and for other U.S. neighborhoods is "Neighborhood, City". But I would prefer "Parish (Municipality)" for these, and that's what's done on the Pt. Wikipedia. Your thoughts? Grandmasterka 06:20, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, go with "Parish (Municipality)". That's what we've used and that's what PT Wikipedia uses for these... Grandmasterka 19:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

AfD article with long name edit

Don't worry about the slow response, I'm sometimes guilty of the same. As for the article with long name, I'm sorry for initially not clarifying my point. Either way, looks like the article made it out of AfD alive :-). Also, I'm sorry if I was overly chained to google, but I do tend to believe that any topic about a developed nation with few (or no) google results is of questionable notability at best. Anyway, best wishes. Cool3 00:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

One suggestion, if you have an account on the Portuguese Wikipedia, you write an article on the same topic there. The other contributors there would probably be more familiar with the topic and maybe their input could help you expand the English article. Secondly, if the Portuguese article survives, it would provide you with a powerful argument in a second AfD, should one occur. Cool3 00:36, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Baltar (Paredes) edit

I am working on this parish as part of my effort to fill in {{Parishes of Paredes}} (which I created.) I'd like you to take a look at it. The Portuguese article doesn't have enough context in it for me to continue translating it. (Starting from "A antiguidade do povoamento de Baltar deve atribuir-se à época romana...") Mainly, I can't really understand the concept of "honra" in this article, and the article for Honra is unrelated (and very strange.) Grandmasterka 05:56, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

My survey has changed. I am now continuing my mission for the best songs, but now I am accepting all genres. I'm giving you a chance to revote for your top ten favorite songs of any genres (not just classic rock which is still the best). I've made a executive decision to keep the existing survey results and just add on to that with the new entries. My feeling for doing this is because classic rock is the most influential genre in music currently so it should be expressed more in the survey. Re: Portal:Portugal edit

I've had some luck listing them on the main WP:PR, but your mileage may vary ;-)

As far as the portal itself, it's very nice, but there are a number of issues I noticed:

  • The "Selected picture" archive doesn't show the actual pictures (and the descriptions used when they were displayed), as one would expect. Also, convention is to give an image credit (like on WP:POTD) below the image.
  • The "Did you know" section needs an archive as well as more frequent updates.
  • The "Categories" section shouldn't include any links that point to pages which don't exist.
  • The "Maintainers and guestbook" section is too self-referential; it should be moved to the talk page or removed entirely.
  • There are a number of boxes listing things to do; I would combine the "Things you can do", "Article needed", and "Collaboration" sections into a single box.
  • There's no need for a "sub-portals" column if there aren't any at the moment.

Overall, though, it's in pretty good shape, and can probably be brought up to featured portal standards fairly easily. Kirill Lokshin 18:45, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Portal edit

Duas coisa:

  1. Excelente trabalho no portal! Não tenho andando muito activo por esses lados, mas de volta e meia lá vou actualizando algumas coisas. Mesmo assim vou tentar ajudar no que puder para torná-lo "featured".

Narrow Gauge railways in Portugal edit

Hi. Many thanks for the RfA vote, which is appreciated. I have been very pleasantly surprised by the level of support I've received.

Yes, narrow gauge railways are one of my passions. How wonderful to have grown up that close to one. I am unfortunately woefully ignorant of Portugese railways, I'm afraid. I'd certainly like to learn more about them. In fact its an area that Wikipedia also seems to be lacking coverage in. Perhaps you could help me work on some articles to correct this? It would be a great chance for me to learn more and for us to improve Wikipedia.

Many thanks, and best wishes, Gwernol 21:38, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Project edit

Hey, you can just create it as you can create any Wiki page, the only problem would be if somebody thinks it isn't a viable project... a Wiki project should attract at least a few members, if you can do that you should be OK... If it's more of a personal crusade you should think hard whether it needs to be formalised as a "project" - if you aren't sure that you can attract more people to join then maybe wait until you can, or at least make sure that similar projects have got off the ground OK... I'll obviously sign up and help where I can. I haven't had as much Wiki time as I once did recently, also my contract is almost up so I'm leaving Porto and heading back to Scotland at the end of this month. I'll still be keeping an eye on Porto affairs but obviously not with the same level of "hands on" knowledge about stuff, eg Porto Metro. Deizio talk 23:24, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The "valuable content" you describe is already discovered in the movie's plot summary. Rat thing from Skull Island bites people. People turn into zombies. Rat thing gets beaten to death. Portugal edit

Sorry. I saw some edits which , not knowing much about the subject, I could not tell whether they were useful contributions or vandalism( I did not know whether the changes were random garbage, or a serious assesment of the events). I looked at the talk page of the editor, and saw a vandalism warning on it dated today, saying the user vandalised Portugal. I noticed that the content that it said was vandalism had not been removed, so I reverted the edits. I obviously made a mistake.Dolive21 14:06, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lusophobia edit

I was amused that some people found nothing on Google to substantiate the claim that the term Lusophobia doesn't exist. As regards the Lusophobia article being POV, other contributors have been far worse than me.

I accept that the term's use in an Australia/East Timor context is tenuous, as nobody in Australia except Geoffrey Hull [1] appears to use it. Portugal-bashing would be more readily understood.

However, in Brazil, the term was definitely in use (see Jeffrey Mosher's “Political Mobilization, Party Ideology, and Lusophobia in Nineteenth-Century Brazil: Pernambuco, 1822 - 1850") and so it's worth retaining the article for that reason alone. Remove the other stuff, but don't delete the article entirely. Quiensabe 11:58, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

My edits @ Portugal edit

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It seems to have happened during an RCP. I always analyse the content of an edit carefully before reverting. I think that it probably happened due to me pressing the backspace during a period of repeated vandalism on a page, as I tend to do about 100 legitimate reverts in every session, this kind of error is possible. As there had been a revert below on the page Portugal I must have thought that this was the page that was under attack, and reverted this by mistake. Álvaro Cunhal really suported the communist invasion of Czechoslovakia. I supose you didn´t see recently the programm in RTP Memória channel, about communism in Western Europe, were it appeared excerpts of interviews with Santiago Carrillo and Enrico Berlinguer, and from a intwerview with him, from the 1980`s, were he TOTALLY suported the 1968 invasion, because he believed the Prague Spring was counterrevolucionary. I supose you don´t know very well Cunhal biography in this aspects, because it´s 100 % true. I can even do a quick search about these in his books, and show you soon his own quotations on these.
