Fair use of images

I have some concerns about some of the images you are uploading. "Fair use" has some legal restrictions, and to use images under fair use we must comply with WP:NFCC. The main criterion is that they must be of educational use, which means that the subject of the image must be accompanied by sourced commentary. Since plot summaries are not sourced commentary, fair use images must not be added to plot sections. Another problem is that you are replacing lower resolution images with higher resolution images. We purposefully use lower res images to comply with the law. While your images unquestionably look better, that is not a factor: if they look better than they need to be to identify their subject then Wikipedia is breaking copyright law. You have uploaded many fine and useful images which comply with the law, but unfortunately many that do not so I have had no choice but to tag these. Please don't be discouraged though from uploading images, it's just a case of learning the rules.

Another tip is that any US trailer prior to 1978 that doesn't carry a copyright notice is in the public domain, which makes it free content; so when uploading content for pre-1978 films, it is worth checking the Commons for free equivalents, or looking up the theatrical trailer on Youtube and seeing if the trailer inlcudes a suitable image. This is the case with File:Charlton Heston in Ben Hur trailer.jpg. Since we have free content available for that film we do not need non-free images. Betty Logan (talk) 08:33, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

• Please stop changing the boxart at Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 video game). Box art isn't supposed to be changed w/o explanation. If you have an explanation, you should start a discussion on the articles talk page, and only make the change if there is consensus to do so, as there have been several editors who are against this change at the moment.
• In general, websites like IMDB or Youtube are not considered useable, because they often lack the criteria needed to be considered to be Wikipedia-standard reliable sources. (Its too easy for random users to go and upload bogus information to them.) Try to find a website where the content is provided directed from editors/journalists, with no room for tinkering. Simple asserting in an edit summary that this is illustrative of the subject is insufficient. Man of Steel pic

If you read WP:FUC and WP:NONFREE you'll see that there needs to be more satisfied than simply "visual representation". First, simply showing the actor can be done with a free image. If it's the actor in the suit then I would say that you should argue for a change in the poster as there was a poster that showed that. There are 10 criteria that need to be satisfied, and the film's poster is the only one that gets away with simply meeting the "visual representation" criteria.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:14, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Canon

Whether something is(n't) canon doesn't factor into whether it's appropriate to include at Wikipedia. The notion of canon is in-universe -- things that "did" or "didn't" happen -- but that isn't how this project addresses subjects in fiction. Regardless of whether e.g. Darth Bane "exists" in the canon, he's had several real-world books written that focus on him, and lots of other verifiable, ancillary coverage. Wookieepedia might be preoccupied with Star Wars "truth" and include/omit appropriately, but not Wikipedia.

Probably between the new EU policy and the upcoming films, there will be tons of conflicts between what's previously been canon and what the new stuff is. That's fine, too. Take a look at this section of the Boba Fett article, which addresses EU conflicts pretty well: it acknowledges that there have been mixed messages about his origin, summarizes and cites them, and that's it. Doesn't matter that one is canon and the others aren't.

Our mission is to contribute to the general dissemination of knowledge and culture through the incentive to the collection and creation of content without restrictions on use, modification and distribution, and promote their difusion; we promote and support the Wikimedia Foundation projects, among which Wikipedia, with emphasis on projects in Portuguese and Mirandese.

We would like however to count on the support of (and in turn ourselves support) all volunteers that are citizens, resident, or simply interested in Portugal. Despite being founded in 2009, the chapter has gone through a long period of inactivity that we are trying to overcome. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
