Aussie films edit

Sorry but what part of "Note: for convenience ALL Australian films are included in this category" didn't you understand? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 17:07, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't know about the whole discussion and I'm sure you were trying to do something good by splitting Aussie films by genre, but, there is a long running precedent of not having films by country subdivided into genre because it is considered useful to have all films in their country category. If you want to change this you will need discuss it and get consensus for your changes. gren グレン 08:21, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aussie films edit

Hi Longhair sorry if you have been offended by any of this. The thing is nobody was doubting your credibility as a wikipedian and your good intentions -it was wrong of some of your project members to bring your edit count into the equation. I am not pleased with some of their responses to this (with the exception of SatuSuro who has been very reasonable) but whats done is done. With films though it happened to come into conflict with the category system by country where I guess we are trying to keep some consistency. There are as I see only some 250 -300 films from Australia currently on wikipedia which means only a page and a half for the category -as yet I think it is easier to file them A-Z in one category -it makes browsing more simplified. I as I said can also see the idea of by genre , I tried to do the same with the American films a while back which (is a huge category)!! but I was met with fierce reaction to my changes also. I was eventually persuaded that simplifying is better in regard to films. All the best ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 07:11, 8 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

  • The language is strongly reminiscent of our Gundagai friend. For the life of me though I am not sure what I have written that qualifies as defamation - I even appealed the deletion of his article as not non-notable - surely the opposite of defamation - famation?. But anyone who thinks that all 20+ million Australians know each other even if they live a few hundred miles apart has a few problems!  :-) Regards --Golden Wattle talk 20:57, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Australian biota template edit

Hi longhair

I noticed you added an Australian biota template to the Southern black bream article. Does this imply that all Australian (both endemic and widespread) fish species should be tagged with such a template? If this is the case, I'm sure i can help you with this if you would like, as i'm slowly trying to bring Australia's popular angling species up to at least GA status.

User:Longhair/AUWPtable edit

Hi, I haven't updated User:Longhair/AUWPtable since the replag for enwiki is more than a week. Do you want me to do update the page or keep waiting for a lower replag? --Erwin85 09:50, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, the replag is the time between the last known edit at the toolserver and the current time (i.e. the time of the last known edit on this Wikipedia). So an update now with a replag of seven days would give you the number of elements in the category seven days ago. Anyway, I'll update the page from now on. --Erwin85 09:55, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Since there are a lot of categories to count it puts less strain on the servers to use the database instead of counting by checking all category pages. However most bots don't use the database since there is no reason to. I don't know why the replag is so high at the moment, but normally the replag is zero, so it wouldn't be a problem. --Erwin85 10:10, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
As often as you'd like. At the moment I have it set at once per day, but I could do this, within reason, as often as you'd like. --Erwin85 10:20, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I just need to know when it's moved so I update the right page, besides that you can move it any time you want. My bot has to do what you want and not the other way around. --Erwin85 10:29, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've placed {{User:Erwin85/CatCount}} on the five subpages. Just transclude User:Erwin85/AUWPCount on any page and my bot will treat the page. I also fixed the wrong counts for the two categories you mentioned. --Erwin85 12:44, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is caused by the replag. The replag is more than 8 days at the moment ([1]), so the toolserver database doesn't "know" yet that you populated the category, it will take 8 days before the toolserver is updated with todays data. I guess we'll just have to see if the replag goes down in the near future and if not look for another method to count the elements. --Erwin85 14:51, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Any12345678 rampage edit

Ah that may be my fault. See the talk page for Student Youth Network. It's the user's 3rd attempt to create this, the previous two having been culled as non-notable (and again they just cut and pasted the previous article in). In their whine over why the article should stay they tried to use the existence of other stations as justification. I pointed out this wasn't the point, and anyone could also mark those as non-notable. *sigh* That backfired --Blowdart | talk 08:42, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:PeanutButterSolution.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:PeanutButterSolution.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Cover kennedyapp speech.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Cover kennedyapp speech.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:26, 27 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

bot work edit

Thanks, I've already created Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Cleanup and Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/BotStatistics/Maintenance in preparation of putting my own bot online (if I can figure the code out), but I see that it will be as easy as linking to User:Erwin85/AUWPCount and getting User:Erwin85Bot to do it (if Erwin agrees). There are probably many projects that would take advantage of this if contacted, so I believe a separate dedicated bot would be a good thing to set up. Are you a programmer? I'm trying to figure out how to change the bot code here so that it does not need to run off the toolserver, but from my home computer. AUWPCount edit

Hi, I've set up my bot to treat pages linking to User:Erwin85/CatCount instead of User:Erwin85/AUWPCount. I've done this to make it more general. The latter is a redirect to the former so you could still transclude User:Erwin85/AUWPCount to make the bot treat the page. However I've changed transclusions of User:Erwin85/AUWPCount to User:Erwin85/CatCount to make it clearer and cleaner. Regards, Erwin85 20:08, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

BTW I noticed you put up some new pages where you don't use the correct namespace, e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject_Australia/BotStatistics/Stubs-people. I assume in this case you want to count the pages in the main namespace so I changed the namespace. I've put up a more detailed explanation for the list of namespaces at User:Erwin85/CatCount. I hope that explains why I changed "1,14" to "0". If not, please let me know so I can try and explain it better. --Erwin85 20:43, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Australian TV Screenshots edit

Dear compatriot. As an Aussie you should be aware that the law here is in now way restrictive with regards to the use of tv screenshots from Australian tv productions for documentary purposes. Legally I can even use small clips. The restrictions here are defamation and reasonable length. Instead of a lengthy legalese, allow me to offer the activities of Media Watch and The Chaser as prima facie arguments. Anna Coren might prefer it otherwise. Both programmes would not be thinkable with restrictions with regards to providing documentary evidence via screenshots, or in their case even rather clips, for which rebroadcast permissions from the "copyright holder" would be hardly obtainable. Uneasy would be using a screenshot from ABC (or 9, etc.) of a picture of the prime minister to document him generally. To use a screenshot of him slipping on a banana peel on the other side would be permissible again if I want to document this event as documented by [[insert originating bradcaster here]]. Screenshots from foreign originating material again are a matter sui generis, therefore they are basically not used at all here. The same applies for audio broadcasts. Adding parameters to project banners edit

Hey Longhair. As you'll see here, I've "been bold" and added QLD=yes|QLD-importance=Low to the article's WP Australia project banner because of an editor's concern that Queensland wasn't mentioned in it (and originally that Australia was). This brings me to a question: Are administrators the only people who should do this, or can editors too? I added QLD-importance=Low because I felt it was fairly obvious to be the case. When searching for the Queensland parameter, I had to look through a few pages to find one with it (being lazy to copy-and-paste it) – it wasn't even in Talk:Queensland nor Talk:Government of Queensland (I eventually found it in Talk:Townsville, Queensland)! Is this, well, normal? Is help required in doing this, if it is a manual process? Thanks in advance for your advice on this.  SEO75 [talk] 23:57, 18 November 2007 (UTC) Reply

And as a very variously vagrant editor of recent - I could not find a fellow editor who deserves this particular award more - tirelessly helping out in the mundane back room stuff that gets the projects up to start - and the long term sustained high quality maintaining as well - that rarely finds another editor to ever help backup with - let alone anyone even noticing/acknowledging as such. Thanks SatuSuro 00:09, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tags edit

I see that your practice is to place tags at the bottom of articles, rather than at the top. This is my practice as well. Might I inquire as to your inspiration or rationale for this? How long have you been doing this? And do you see this as a growing trend? Unschool (talk) 04:11, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's exactly what I wanted to know. Shanes' essay was the first thing that got me thinking about it, when I read it about 15 months ago. I keep a link to the essay on my user page, and I frequently move tags to the bottom of articles—particularly cleanup tags. I'm just glad to run across someone with a similar line of thought. Cheers. The Fergusons edit

I was hoping you could look at the article on The Fergusons I have undertaken further edits to this item which can be found at Talk:The Fergusons/Temp which addresses the potential copyright issue and provides greater detail in respect to the band's history. Could you let me know whether the updated article could replace the original and the copyright tage be removed. Dan arndt (talk) 07:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

QLD edit

There shouldn't be too many of them, I generally do use QLD. I was just a little careless with that one. Thanks for fixing that one and thanks for tweaking the template too. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 23:54, 18 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

Reliable Sources - Footystats edit

I was just wondering why you don't consider Kevin Taylors Footystats to be a reliable source? I would say that it was more reliable than the newspapers or AFL websites that often get things wrong, and never update or correct their stories. If KT is notified of a mistake he corrects it immediately. He's been doing this for years and has had it published in some books, and as Bruce McAvaney is quoted on the front cover of the 2000 printed version of Footystats "I wouldn't dare venture off ot the MCG for Friday night football without Footystats". What's next, bios from fullpointsfooty not reliable either? The-Pope (talk) 14:48, 19 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

Bali Nine references edit

I've created a subpage of the talk page for the Bali Nine article that will index all news articles covering the Bali Nine, for use in the article. Add any new ones you find to Talk:Bali Nine/Collected references – I found a lot more articles from Wikinews than I expected on my search :) Spebi 02:05, 20 December 2007 (UTC) Reply

Article Ratings edit

How do I go about getting the article ratings lifted from 'Start' or 'Stub' class - I've had a look and believe that they should easily be a higher rating but don't know what the process is they I need to go through. I notice from a few other articles that I've worked on in the past (Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons, Brian Cadd) that you have changed the ratings so I was wondering if you can can you have a look at The Stems, The Triffids and The Hoodoo Gurus have been working on creating articles for the various albums, singles, band members etc for each - I wouldn't mind somebody checking them and letting me know what improvements I need to make to bring them up to a better standard. Dan arndt (talk) 08:25, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I feel a little strange rating articles where I have made most of the contributions - just like someone else to check them and see whether they feel the rating should be changed. So I appreciate your assessment. Dan arndt (talk) 05:23, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cool edit

Nice user/talk page... very unique. -- Mentifisto 03:42, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

When's long ago? How exactly did you 'steal' it? :-) -- Mentifisto 03:56, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Found it (actually I tried to find it before my above questions but gave up after year 2005 since your userpage has so many edits) - you began using the program-UI-like box about a year ago... and yeah, I know the beauty of a wiki, I'm highly addicted. :-)
Actually I meant to ask you where you got it from... who the user was, if you remember, etc. -- Mentifisto 04:17, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bots edit

HI and thanks for the tip. Generally, if I care about it enough I have it watchlisted and the bot message is redundant. Still, wasting valuable pixels replying to a bot doesn't really help anything! Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 21:15, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

unreferenced edit

you should always place {{unreferenced}} and other templates at the top of articles so editors can see them right away, and readers can be aware that the content may not be referenced and true. --Dan LeveilleTALK 08:44, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I do believe they are a little overly obtrusive, but I don't see the need to hide them. It's not like it's a permanent part of the article - editors will see it and want to get rid of it. I don't agree with you, but I'm not going to argue, as long as you're positively contributing. --Dan LeveilleTALK 08:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
