Hi, just wanted to say thanks for making the really pretty map to accompany Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe! The only problem is, "Gibraltar" is misspelled not only in the title but also twice on the map itself. "Switzerland" is misspelled too. --Angr/tɔk mi 18:35, 1 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Not to be a PITA, but it's still misspelled "Gibralter" in the heading in the upper left-hand corner of the image. --Angr (t·c) 14:11, 4 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

You have to provide a license tag because "feel free to use" is not a reliable copyright information. Beside it's better to use Wikimedia Commons. --Saperaud 05:36, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image:Ely cathedral tower.jpg edit

I saw the copyright on this image wasn't exactly what you said when uploading it. I think this is more correct, but if you could make sure this is what you wanted, that would be appreciated.

If it is, you might want to change your other images to {{Attribution}} as well. This guarantees others must give you credit if they use your pictures, unlike what's currently there, which gives people the right to use it for any purpose with or without attribution. Cheers. Guidelines? edit

Hi, I know my user blog may be a bit controvertial, although I have seen some other similar ones. Does anyone have any views on it? I was wondering if there may be some guidelines on opinions in user blogs. Lofty 17:48, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Opinion is:
    • you should not use Wikipedia as a blog - go to bolgspto and make your own
    • until you learn to spell, you should put all your submissions through a spell checker!

Image contributions edit

Hey Lofty,

Sorry I forgot to respond. You can see your contributions from any page just by clicking My contributions, but that lists all your contributions; if you just want images, you can use interiot's tool. I see that some other users have selected licenses that comply with what you want (attribution). There are actually a whole load of licenses that give attribution, most of which do the same thing (see WP:ICT for a list). {{GFDL-self}} -- the GNU Free Documentation License and {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} -- the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike are the most common. The one I used for you, {{Attribution}} does about the same, but without legal text to describe exactly what it means. Hope that helps. Telso 02:15, 24 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Blocking edit

I'm not sure why my IP address 213.40.131.66. has been blocked. User: Arwel Parry says ive reversed an edit 3 times, but I don't even know how to reverse an edit! Can this user please clarify my reason for blocking, as I must be unaware of a wiki policy! Thanks.

My IP address history says I've been editing pages I havn't and I'm beeing blamed for vandilism I didn't incur, despite having a wiki username. I can only assume that my IP address is shared. Is there nothing else that can be done, as it has happened several times that I am unable to edit pages because of being blocked for vandalism I didn't commit. Can anyone help?! Thankyou.

The IP address was involved in a Squidward attack Special:Contributions/213.40.131.66 which means that it is an open proxy. If something has been done to fix this, we can unblock this IP.--Kungfu Adam (talk) 23:38, 29 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Germany 06 154.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Germany 06 154.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 11:05, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

On the basis of what you wrote in the image description page, I added the tag {{cc-by-2.5}}, as that seems to convey your intent. You may want to double-check what that license says to make sure you're OK with it. Angr (tc) 12:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Whenever you upload an image, there's a dropdown menu from which you should select the appropriate license. If you know the template names, you can just type those in too, instead of picking one from the menu. To require attribution of an image you made yourself, you can add {{Attribution}} (which I didn't know about until I saw it mentioned above on your talk page), or {{cc-by-2.5}} (a layman-friendly version of whose text you can read here). I believe the GFDL also requires attribution, so {{GFDL-self}} will also do it. If you don't care about attribution, then {{NoRightsReserved}} or {{PD-self}} is the most unbureaucratic tag. Anglophile edit

You write: "A strange facination....unless you are a British expat?" Nope, all brances of my family, as far back as I can take them, all crossed the ocean before 1776 from various locations in the British Isles (including Ireland), with a bit of American Indian and a smattering of German thrown in for good measure.

You write: "I am sure you may know was the foundation of the empire, although the slavery related parts weren't so nice..." So was much of the US connected to slavery somehow, but you should be proud, the Royal Navy and British policy was instrumental in stamping out the slave trade in the 19th century.

You write: " I also see that you like Blackadder, which happens also to be my favourite comedy, I did not know that it could be seen in the US!" It's on PBS. Since I love British history, I get all the jokes while most Americans go "huh? what?" I hope they have a fifth series.

You write: "I'm also suprised about the fox hunting and hereditary peers." I am a supporter of gun ownership rights (see the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution) and I hear horror stories about people like Tony Martin. The problem people have against fox hunting is that they reflexively hate guns and rich people. They are socialists who want to take away rich people's money and everyones guns to solidify their own power. That's just silly. I like hunting, I like rich people (I want to be one one day), and guns keep you safe and keep you equal and free.

You write: "Although you do say that you take an interest in British politics...Can't blame yer, I think that what we have is a good system...Not to insult senates or powerfull presidencies...maybe." C-SPAN, the government TV station here in the US, broadcasts Prime Minister's Questions once a week and I try to watch it whenever I can. The problem I have with your system of government is that the House of Lords has been castrated. I'd like to strangle the authors of the Parliament Acts of 1911 and 1949 and the House of Lords Act of 1999. I think without an upper house of government to slow down and cool the often rash acts of the lower house, you get more and more socialism because the MPs hand out freebies to the voters to ensure their reelection. (That's why it is so hard to change your National Health Service and our Social Security system.)

You ask: "I am interessed to know what your views on devolution and monarchy in Britain are..." I too think it is silly. I like the quote you have from Her Majesty about a United Kingdom. Of course as a conservative republican, I think that my form of government is the best ever, but I totally respect constitutional monarchies. Though I'd like the Lords to have more power and would pay money to see the Queen to refuse to give royal assent to a bill. But that'll never happen, as she'd probably be dethroned. I don't like the republican movements in Australia, New Zealand, or Canada as I think they should be proud of being part of their history as part of the British Empire. Although I support States' rights in the US, I think devolution in the UK is a stupid idea. Does Wales really need a Parliament of their own? They've got by without one since what, 1300?

You ask: "And I would also like to know what nomlecalture is used in US for the small island on which I live...I have heard that people mistakenly say England in referance to the country of the UK...I am a keen unionist you see!" True, most people say "English" when they really mean "British" or "of the United Kingdom." Even though I know this full well, I slip into saying "English" when I mean "British." For instance, people say, "the English just passed a law..." when it was Parliament, or "he has an English accent..." when it is a Scots or Welsh accent. The biggest mistake is calling Elizabeth the "Queen of England" instead of her true title. Most people refer to the islands collectively as "the British Isles" which are comprised of "Ireland" on the west and "England" on the east. When I know damn well it's "Ireland" on the west and "Great Britain" on the east. Look up these two Wikipedia articles: Britain and British Isles (terminology) -- tell me what you think.

Template:Anglican Cathedrals in the United Kingdom edit

Hi! I like the idea behind this template that you recently created. However, the anglican church in Scotland is not the Church of Scotland, it is the Scottish Episcopal Church. JeremyA 16:16, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest using the Scottish Episcopal Church cathedrals. I know that you say that you don't want to do that, but otherwise you would have to rename the template, and as something like Catherdals in the United Kingdom it could potentially get very large as many cities also have a RC cathedral. Alternatively you could just have Anglican Cathedrals in England and Wales, and have a different template for Scotland.

Major settlements edit

I'm afraid I don't think the template is a good idea. "Major" is vague and people will very likely add their own place even when it doesn't quite merit it. I don't see the need as there are categories for towns by county and nearly all of the smallish number of English cities have a category of their own. Please don't make templates for any more counties. There's a related thing that it would be nice to see done - lots of counties don't have a geography category yet, so if you feel like creating any, that would be useful, but its entirely up to you of course. England to UK edit

Hi. Can you please tell me what your reasoning is for changing references on multiple articles from England to UK (or Great Britain)? I am especially curious about your switching England stubs for UK stubs. Generally to avoid over-filling stub-categories the most specific stub is used. Can you please explain if there is a reason for changing to a less specific stub? Thanks. Road Wizard 17:47, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for replying so quickly. Switching the stubs back where you have changed them would be useful as this will fix the category issue. For your changes in identifying articles as being in the UK rather than in England, your reasoning seems sound, but you may wish to slow down your rate of change in case someone has an objection. There are a few people around who feel strongly that English articles should be identified as English, so they may falsely accuse you of vandalism or imposing a POV on the articles. I suggest that you wait a couple of days, see if anyone objects or reverts your changes then carry on again. If someone does revert or object, you should probably discuss the issue with them in order to reach a consensus first. Hope this advice is helpful. :) Road Wizard 18:03, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

{{Lincolnshire}} edit

Hi Lofty, I don't think the way this template has been added to articles is very successful. The final layout looks quite messy (i.e. there are other infoboxes in place). Also, it would make sense to mention somewhere this refers to the Ceremonial County, as N Lincs and NE Lincs are separate unitary authorities, as you must already know. Besides these comments, I think the infobox looks good. Regards, E Asterion u talking to me? 03:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. I tried using a right-aligned table with two rows myself but it did not work either (I have to admit my coding is not very good!). Maybe it would make sense not to use it for the districts and unitary authorities (i.e. North Lincolnshire), and at your own discretion for articles with other infoboxes/templates in place. Cornwall template edit

Hi, I've removed your Cornwall template from most of the articles that you've put it on - (before you hit me I do have a good reason for this!). I quite like what you've done (trying to group Cornwall stuff together so that people can cross navigate between articles?), but in many cases where you've put the template has lead to repitition of information (a lot of what you've put is covered under "see also" when apropriate, and also at List of topics relating to Cornwall). In a lot of cases the info is not directly relevent to the article (like having constitutional status of Cornwall, and Truro on all of the district pages). Also I felt that in many cases it actually made the pages more confusing, especially where they already have several overlapping infoboxes. The other point I wanted to make is that the purpose of the template is actually covered by the Cornwall portal, which is a grouping and presentation of all the wiki Cornwall stuff, so it makes more sense to link to this page rather than using the much bulkier template. I don't want to discourage you from contributing - maybe if you want to talk about it some more and how we can develop your idea either Portal:Cornwall or Talk:Cornwall would be a good place to start? Happy to discuss this with you further, take care Mammal4 21:16, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

County footers edit

Hello. I'm going to do some more work on the existing county footers as there are currently at least 5 styles in use and I'd like to see that replaced with a standard. In the meantime if you want to create another I'd suggest using the style used for Lincolnshire and Cornwall as a template. Mrsteviec 08:33, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Yorkshire one is ok as it is outside the scheme of ceremonial counties. I've removed it where it had been placed on local government districts as there is already a district footer for those articles and this is common for all local government districts articles for the UK. I see no reason for Yorkshire to be an exception. I will work on a way to get the flag in to the county footers. Mrsteviec 08:54, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Roman Catholic Cathedrals Template edit

I really think that the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in Exile and the Bishopric of the Forcces' Cathedral should be included in this template. This is because the term 'Roman Catholic' is sometimes ambiguous - it is debated whether 'Roman Catholic' is only exclusive to Latin-rite Catholics, or whether it includes both Latin and Eastern Rite Catholics. However, the Wikipedia article 'Roman Catholicism' is the article about the Catholic Church. Therefore, because Wikipedia must have considered both Latin and Eastern-Rite Catholics to be Roman Catholics, then I do not see why the Apostolic Exarchate of the Ukrainians' Cathedral and also the Bishopric of the Forces' Cathedral should be deleted from this template. Proposed new British Isles template edit

Lofty, as the original writer of the British Isles template, I'd like to know your opinion about a proposal I am making on Ireland talk page (I understand also if you want to stay away, sorry). Consensus is moving towards being happy with the template in general but wanting a different name. This could be done by creating a new template with whatever name is chosen, but I fear that this would cause a fork - with two templates for the same thing being edited separately.

What I am proposing is a new template with a user defined title which can be used by all articles. I'm sure the Ireland article won't agree to the title British Isles, this would not stop other articles from using it and would avoid a form.

I've made some changes and corrections to your original template:

  • Included Isle of Man in the list of islands and likewise a link to list of islands of the Isle of Man
  • Included [[Briton|British] in the list of peoples
  • Added the Irish Free State to the list of historic states
  • Changed "Irish Gaelic" and "Scots Gaelic" to "Irish" and "Scottish Gaelic"
  • Substantially changed the History section, which I fear was very anglo-centric (there is of course now, as always with history, reason to say that the current history is hiberno-centric)

Please feel you can give your views on the template and idea of a common template with a user-defined name. (Even comment on which proposed title you would prefer.)

Regards and thanks, --sony-youth 14:03, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Move British Isles (common) to British Isles edit

Lofty,

Okay! There seems to be some agreement on the Ireland talk page. Would it be possible to move the Template:British Isles (common) code to Template:British Isles (- simply copy and paste?), so that when it "goes live" everyone is pointing to the same place - depsite calling it by different names :)

Also, on the "common" template, I've set the "default" name to simply "The British Isles". You may prefer to change this to something else. You have "Great Britain and Ireland - Archipelago of the British Isles" on the "normal" template at present. This is done by changing the highlighed section in the following line:

| title = [[British Isles|{{{1|The British Isles}}}]]

The first line will also have to be changed, from:

| name = British Isles (common)

to

| name = British Isles

to reflect the new location of the template.

I've also added some <noinclude> elements to provide an explaination of the template and how to use it. Please, can you edit these as you think is best to explain it to an audience outsid of Ireland.

What do you think?

RC Cathedrals in GB and Ireland Template edit

Hi Lofty, I have recently looked at the RC Cathedrals in GB and Ireland Template and I think it is really unstylishly long, especially when it appears at the bottom of an article. Why don't you just cut it short to RC Cathedrals in England and Wales, RC Cathedrals in Scotland and RC Cathedrals in Ireland? Then, the template would look more tidy and it wouldn't be that long (which was the reason why you complained to me about my addition of the Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians and Bishopric of the Forces' cathedrals a few months ago onto the same template). just to let you know, I have been accused of being your sockpuppet, along with user:ash online. Ive already complained on my userpage. the issue should be cleared up shortly --Chickenfeed9 16:01, 2 February 2007 (UTC)  Reply

Sock Puppeting edit

As detailed above be User:chickenfeed9 I have been accused of being a sock puppet of you! Obviously this is an abserd suggestions, as we have even had conversations with one another, whereby you have insulted my grammar! I think that this user (who has chosen to remain anonomous by the way) is playing a game, which needs sorting out as soon as possible. Maybe it is a Scottish or Cornish nationalist who is not happy with my campaign... --Ash online 16:23, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

TfD nomination of Template:Infobox England place with UK flag for UK map edit

Template:Infobox England place with UK flag for UK map has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. --Pit-yacker 16:03, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Break in template edit

Why are you removing the br break in Template:English_Cities, the added break makes the template look better when it's up against other templates. Look at the bottom of the Truro page, they are jumbled. Adding a break would resolve the issue. I would appreciate a response rather than you simply reverting it back. --A Cornish Pasty 12:49, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

UK infobox templates edit

There is currently a debate about replacing the existing UK place infoboxes with a unified one. I generally support this proposal but there is an attempt to remove the historic county information that a lot of people worked on and where a consensus was reached. I would appreciate your input into this. Thanks. Owain (talk) 11:07, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Userbox edit

Hello. I am not very good at making userboxes, so could you make me one. If you do, could it say "This user supports the Iraq War".

Thank you,

Types of nebula edit

I see that you created Template:Types of nebula.

Nebulae cannot really be divided very easily into "types". A large number of terms are used to refer to various objects in the interstellar medium; they cannot all be encompassed within the navigation template. While some nebulae are distinct objects (such as planetary nebulae and supernova remnants), most of the interstellar medium is diffuse. Most diffuse nebulae may simultaneously be reflection, emission, and absorption nebulae, so such distinctions are impractical. Also, many other terms are used for parts of the diffuse interstellar medium; trying to identify distinct objects is impractical.

I am curious as to your thoughts on this. I will also be starting a discussion at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Astronomy. Please comment there on the template. Also, it would help if you could indicate your level of expertise in astronomy. (I myself have a Ph.D. in astronomy, and I have published several papers on the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies.) Dr. Submillimeter 09:46, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nebulae really are not classified using some of these terms. No one in professional astronomy ever separates "emission" and "absorption" nebulae from each other. I have recommended that the template should be deleted, although the template is not nominated for deletion yet.
Maybe the template's contents need to be changed. What could you suggest? Dr. Submillimeter 09:57, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template nominated for deletion edit

I nominated the template for deletion. You can comment at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2007 June 14#Template:Types of nebula. I really do not think that it is salvagable. Dr. Submillimeter 13:51, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

An English passport? edit

Hello Lofty!

It seems a debate about the use of nationality and ethnicity has been stirred on the Bernard Manning article talk page (I do beg your pardon!). It is my believe that nationalism is spoiling the integrity of some articles, and have had Union flags and citations removed with no justification. Some are even asserting there is an English nationality!

Your comments are very much welcome on the talk page, as I feel I'm talking to a brick wall. Jhamez84 22:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Popular vote graph edit

I like your graph on the Popular vote for UK parties. Do you have the data which it was made with, and can you please send it to me? I ask because the popular vote totals for early elections (1830 onwards) are not in the wikipedia articles.

Thanks very much, BillMasen 20:06, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

but do you still have the data? would it be possible to nab it off you :p

Cheers BillMasen 01:27, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

many thanks. Please email it to grey_harry@hotmail.com :). Cheers, BillMasen 14:18, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
