revision to Barrera

Hello littlewink, I wanted to ask you why you felt it suitable to reduce the article by half of its contents? The contributions I made were all with citations and validated information that were appropriately sectioned off to make a great article. You removed quite a bit of very informative subject matter. I wanted to see if you would please revert the changes you made to this article as it took great time and effort to improve it. If there is something that I could change, please let me know I would gladly change it, but please let the format stay as it makes a better article. @Jaimecarballo: Hi! Thank you for your effort in improving the article. I didn't remove any info which had a reference. I removed a couple of entries of persons which were listed twice, and the statement that Barrera comes from a 'family originally lived beside a gate of fence' was also mentioned twice. With my edit I also applied the formatting described at the standards for surname articles. Having the same surname doesn't make people notable, so they are listed as 'neutral' as possible. Other surname articles do not have images of persons (even the one about Roosevelt for example), to avoid 'promotion' of a small number of persons. @Littlewink: Thank you so much,I did review it and you are correct, there were some duplicates, my oversight and my apologies. The reason why I wanted to include a gallery is that it does make a article that much more interesting. It references a quick visual of individuals whom have made a difference or have played an important role in society. Being that this is a surname, it would be great for those with the surname to have some type of identifiable role in their ancestry. It truly does make for a better article with visual references. Would you please reconsider and allow to incorporate the gallery section in this article? It would really make it better. Also, there is another article that I found and its relatively a beginner article, the case is such that it is a surname and also a city, located in Spain. The article is "Villacorta". Could you add a (disambiguation) page to it. Make the main page "Villacorta (name)" and have a "for other uses see "Villacorta (disambiguation). I'm relatively new to editing and don't quite know how to do this. Thank you again littlewink, you have been really helpful, cheers! @Jaimecarballo: Hi again! Regarding Barrera: I still don't see why adding a gallery with to the article is of any value for the reader. If your intention is to make the article more interesting visually, why not add a couple images at the side? I just re-added two images. Given the length of the whole article there may be room for another one.

Regarding Villacorta: the place in Spain doesn't seem to have an article at the English Wikipedia, so there's nothing to disambiguate. Is it Villacorta on Spanish Wikipedia? Please translate that article first at e.g. Villacorta (Riaza). Cheers! LittleWink (talk) 15:12, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Autovia

I don't know if I'm doing this correct, please bear with me. The Autovia Mulliner bodies car Reg. EYX 464, pictured in the panel was owned by my father for many years. I was with him when he bought it as a non-runner. A Master Mechanic, he had it running by the weekend, undertook much work on it with me and my brother as helpers. When the engine needed reboring, the strip down and rebuild was done on our kitchen table (Mum was very patient)! The car was a gem, I was fascinated by the centrifugal clutch, so simple and effective - most people assumed it was a fluid flywheel as the gearbox was manufactured by Armstrong-Siddley and a centrifugal clutch was unheard of on the whole. Dear LittleWink,

You reverted my edit to this article (explicit reference to Deutsch). I see your point. However, the confusion between (really) Dutch and Deutsch (German) seems to be systematic in US English (phonetically close), and i feel that your version does not address this problem.

• Can we find a satisfactory way to explicitly settle this confusion?

APO: descriptors for Indian persons

Hi and thank you for tidying up the mess at Guha (surname). I agree with all of the changes except one: shortening Bengali fiction writer to writer. India is a pretty big place and saying "Indian" is just about as specific as saying "European". Anything that helps narrow down the focus is a good thing: for example, for politicians it's best to specify which state's legislature they work in, and for creative professionals who work in the medium of a language (writers, singers, filmmakers, actors...) it's customary to make a mention of that language. Of course, there are cases where this is inapplicable: there are actors who've worked in the cinema industries of several languages and for them it's best to omit the language description altogether. Michael Collier

Hello, I wanted to ask, why are there two Michael Collier pages? Aren't they the same person? It's because someone (Micheal Collier himself?) overwrote the article about the British author Michael Collier (author) with content about the American poet Michael Collier (poet). Blat

Hi, thank you for cleaning up on Blat, including moving Blat, Lebanon to Blat, Jbeil District.

I normally edit (mostly villages/town) histories about Israel/Palestine; but these last 2-3 months I have been (trying!) to clean up the Lebanese villages/towns. It has been a horrible mess (so far I have discovered 6-7 villages where there were 2 articles (under different names) about the same village....)

Firstly: Every scholar of the Middle East have mixed up various village with similar sounding names.... Benny Morris, Walid Khalidi, Israel Finkelstein....just everyone. I think I became aware of the problem back in 2011, see Talk:Tira, Israel: Petersen is a professor of Middle East archeology....and totally mixed up the different Tiras......(and the Taybeh (disambiguation)s etc)

You write here that "people who mix up won't arrive here, but at Blat"....you could equally have said that people who end up at Tira, Israel would not be looking for/mixing it up with Al-Tira, Haifa...but that is exactly what happens, again and again! Mostly it is because people simply are not aware of there being more places with the same name. (And remember; historians typically (also) use sources from a time when the divisions of districts was quite different from today).

In short; I have found that a "For other places with similar names, see .....etc.." link at the top of the page is a very helpful tool... Cheers, Huldra (talk) 23:23, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

@Huldra: Hi, thank you for your message. I know the Romanizing of Middle Eastern place names can create confusion. (This is my last encounter with that phenomenon). But, although WP:NAMB has been challenged in the past with the argument hat hatnotes are always helpful (e.g. this RfC), we cannot anticipate every (Google) search. When hatnotes are violating WP:INTDAB and WP:NAMB, which was the case here, I boldly remove them.

I saw you created the redirect Blatt, Lebanon, so a hatnote is helpful now. The hatnote at Tira, Israel is helpful because it links to the possibly sought Al-Tiras, but I don't think the hatnote at [Al-Tira, Haifa]] is necessary because the disambiguator Haifa is pretty specific, and - especially - because the link to the disambiguation page exists in the first sentence of that article. Battle of Gaza (1917)

The redirects from these three pages to Battle of Gaza are seriously useless and are unhelpful to readers:

• British West Indies Regiment
• William Courtenay (filmmaker)
• The Grenadiers

They all relate to the battles in 1917; and have nothing to do with the battles in 312 BC, 217 BC, 1239, 2007, 2008-09, 2012 and 2014. That was why I made a WP:IAR DAB page. Narky Blert (talk) 01:33, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

@Narky Blert: Hi. Well, having the twee entries forked on a separate page is equally (un)helpful IMHO. I can't see why this is needs a different solution than Battle of Mogadishu (2007). If you really want an article at 'Battle of Gaza (1917)', that cannot be a disambiguation page. Many thanks for the helpful suggestion! An SIA looks the way to go. Now, to read up WP:SIA and the three main articles before writing a summary article (which is all most readers will need anyway).

It's an unusual case: offhand, I can only think of two other pre-modern battles fought in the same campaign by essentially the same troops over essentially the same ground after a breathing-space - the First and Second Battles of Wissembourg (1793) and the First and Second Battles of Zurich (1799). @Pierre cb: Yes, it has different meanings, but we have disambiguation page Nowcasting for that. Searching readers arriving at one of the meanings have searched for 'Nowcasting' + something else, so it is unlikely that they were confusing that topic for another meaning. @Launchballer: Hi. You're probably right. IMHO "Belmont Prisons" should redirect to the article about the place all three things are located, either Banstead or Belmont, Sutton. That article should describe the bus terminus and route in relation to the prisons. Because as far as I see it only the bus terminus is referred to by "Belmont Prisons" alone (the prison articles do not mention "Belmont Prison(s)"). LittleWink (talk) 20:37, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi LittleWink, I really don't see how throwing away information helps anyone. You may feel that "General Ernouf (ship)" provides excess information, but why do you think you speak for all readers? Hi - I am confused as why you have removed this disambiguation page and simply redirected the page to the 103rd regiment. The 103rd Regiment of Foot is the only regiment of foot out of 135 regiments of foot (ignoring the ones where only one regiment existed in the first place) not have its own disambiguation page. Ship index

Hi LittleWInk, the problem is that often the first person to write an article about a ship simply gives the article the title e.g., "Excalibur (ship)", preempting a disambig page. Sometime when I have tried to move such pages I have run into opposition on the grounds that as there are no other pages about other vessels named "Excalibur", there is no reason to add info about which "Excalibur" we are talking about. Even when such changes are not reverted, converting a page that was an article into a disambig page can be laborious because of the number of links that have to be changed. Yeah, I understand your position, but naming those articles 'ship index' didn't seem right to me, looking at the characteristic of recognizability of article titles, since 'a ship index' is something that 'we' invented. In other words: the page about ships named Excalibur and of the type 'ship index' (something a Wikipedia reader might not care about), not about a ship index named Excalibur. Just my 2 cents... Category tag on dab page

Hi, in your edits to pages such as H24 you've changed it to use a direct category tag rather than using a parameter of the dab template. Can you explain the reason for that change? @DexDor: Hi. Your comment about consistency in relation to {{Letter-Number Combination Disambiguation}}got me thinking:

• Only approximately 94 disambiguation pages have the format you mention.
• Consistency for who? We should do things to serve the reader, not the editor, and I assume 'we' created Template:Letter-Number Combination Disambiguation for this reason only (?). If not, then the template can be deleted and the corresponding category a maintenance-category...

Anyway, my reasoning for the change: A letter-number combination disambiguation page has that article title format. The page itself does not contain 'several items of that type' AND 'several items of another type' - which is the common use for {{disambiguation}} parameters - ALL items are of that type. Re the "Wikitext" page

Hi Little Wink,

I've been trying to assist newbies with learning and understanding Wikitext, thus my recent attempt to enable the "Wikitext" page to actually have a link to a helpful list of Wikitext codes that we use around here. You were correct that Wikitext is not an "ambiguous" term, and a disambiguation page may not have been the best use of that "pagespace." Your reversion has caused me to decide to turn that pagespace into a full fledged article about Wikitext. Just wanted to let you know.

@Scottperry: I didn't redirect it, see the diff, I only added the section to the redirect. Wiki markup was redirected earlier this year. That article also had Wikipedia self-reference issues, and not enough context or secondary sources to justify an own article. Sorry about not giving a reason for reverting the change to a SIA. The page should be a disambig page since the concepts, exponential map in Riemann geometry and exponential map in Lie theory are distinct concepts. Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero (Foster the People song) & others.

I have marked this and other R from ambiguous page for the simple expediency that they are duplicate titles to redirects already created i.e. Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero and Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero (song). This also forewarns other editors that the simple form already exists and saves duplicates cats been added. @Richhoncho: Hi. The explanation line of {{R from ambiguous term}} clearly states:

This is a redirect from an ambiguous page name to a page or list that disambiguates it. These redirects are pointed to by links that should always be disambiguated.

This is not true for the redirects you mention here, because the article titles aren't ambiguous. (There is only one "Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero" (Foster the People song)!) So, whatever the 'problem' is what you are trying to solve here, {{R from ambiguous term}} cannot be used. As far as I can tell only {{R from song}} is a usable template here. You didn't read the discussion on my talkpage did you? Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero is a redirect from a song, the other 2 redirects are not from songs because they are duplicate, misspelling, superfluous to requirements. It is, as I have already said, a way to stop all three Chins being tagged with categories. Makes life so much simplier, don't you think? @Richhoncho: Yes , I do understand what you are trying tot do, I only disagree with your solution. These redirect should not have repeated content categories, like Category:<year> songs. But being a duplicate, a misspelling, or superfluous to requirements does not mean you can tag them tagging with {{R from ambiguous term}}. And since Category:Redirects from songs is a maintenance category, duplication in that category is allowed, unless there is some policy that states otherwise? Regarding the three disambiguation scenarios:

1. disambiguation page (standard solution)
2. primary topic with hatnote link to disambiguation page (if priority is obvious)
3. primary topic with hatnote link to a single alternative article (if priority is obvious)

I don't think that an IATA code is that commonly known and used (except for those who work there), thus it quite natural for me to apply the first solution. IEV is just an abbreviation, which currently three explanations. --Gunnar (talk) 21:48, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Because IEV (disambiguation) already exists, that page has to be moved to preserve the page history. And someone could reasonably disagree with the move because the current redirect hasn't changed since 2005, and the disambiguation page was created at the current location (instead of at IEV).
