redirects edit

Your edit summary here] Links shouldn't go to redirects unnecessarily. is only partially true. In general, WP:NOTBROKEN describes There is nothing inherently wrong with linking to redirects to articles and goes on to state With a few limited exceptions, there are no good reasons to pipe links solely to avoid redirects. It is almost never helpful to replace with redirect. This is precisely what you did by changing this:

 • HMS Carlskrona (M04), a 1980 Swedish Navy minelayer modified for ocean patrol in 2009 and redesignated as P04 (* HMS Carlskrona (M04), a 1980 Swedish Navy minelayer modified for ocean patrol in 2009 and redesignated as P04)

to this:

 • HMS Carlskrona (M04), a 1980 Swedish Navy minelayer modified for ocean patrol in 2009 and redesignated as P04 (* HMS Carlskrona (M04), a 1980 Swedish Navy minelayer modified for ocean patrol in 2009 and redesignated as P04)

Further, WP:MOSDAB gives guidance on how disambiguation entries should be formatted. In particular, WP:DABREDIR and WP:PIPING describe when and how to use piping or redirects. olderwiser 17:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The article on HMS Carlskrona is not a disambiguation article. I don't agree with the statement "It is almost never helpful to replace with redirect.", I find the contrary to be true. Redirects should never be used on purpose; the function exists only to avoid dead links. Lingon of the Dark (talk) 18:05, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
You misunderstand. M4 is a disambiguation page. If you disagree with the well-established guidance at WP:NOTBROKEN, you should discuss it on that talk page. And if you disagree with the well-established guidance on how to format entries for disambiguation pages, you should discuss that on the relevant talk page. olderwiser 18:27, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
