URI schemes

Hi, thanks for explaining the reasoning behind your reverts on URI.

My reasoning for adding strange URI’s is to show the difference between webpage addresses and URL’s.

In practice, most people glance at Wikipedia and move on; they don’t follow all links. That’s why I want strange URI’s in the article.

Happy to reword or pick another place in the document to put these. I think they make the encyclopedia friendlier, funnier, and clearer.

There should be a way to do this that does not harm the clarity of your text or the rest of the exposition. Crasshopper (talk) 13:56, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@Crasshopper: I'm not sure what you mean by "show the difference between webpage addresses and URL’s", or how a long list of obscure schemes shows that. Most of them are not even wikilinks; I don't see how anyone would know what something like "things" refers to in your list or how it would help them to have it listed with no link or other explanation. Three of your links point to disambiguation pages, which is also not helpful. Even the provided links are generally of no help; links like adiumxtra just take the reader to the Adium article which has no information about the adiumxtra scheme. IP over Avian Carriers is not only an April Fools joke but is also below the network layer and not even related to the URI scheme. There is already a table for schemes with articles in Template:URI schemes, which is already included at the end of the URI article. If you still think that listing obscure schemes in the URI article is appropriate, please bring it up on the article's Talk page; I am happy to follow whatever consensus is decided there. -LiberatorG (talk) 01:36, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Code page 866

Thank you for that. I was, of course, purely thinking in terms of box drawing in existing text files in OEM-437 (hence "OEM box drawing characters"), and that 866 is the only encoding supported by modern browsers that will display them correctly. I had not noticed that I had made an incorrect statement (because, of course, the characters themselves are included in Unicode and thus UTF-8, just not in the same representations).

I'm somewhat considering adding it back with corrections, but suspect viewing old pre-Unicode text files with box drawing in a web browser is probably too niche a usage case to be worth mentioning. -- HarJIT (talk) 21:10, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

@HarJIT: If you want to share old pre-Unicode text files containing non-ASCII characters, it is generally better to convert them to a Unicode encoding first. That will work regardless of its code page, and you wouldn't have to verify that the only non-ASCII characters in use are the box drawing characters. You could then use the content with a wider variety of modern tools and editors, copy and paste into other Unicode files, etc. -LiberatorG (talk) 16:26, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

He didn't wake up one morning and think, "Oh gosh, I guess I'll write a browser for the older Mac systems !" and then discovered that by gosh, Mozilla is ending support for that platform ! What a coincidence !

He started the project BECAUSE of the end of old-mac support, not in parallel !

And that's not a biased point of view, it's simple fact and common sense. Why would anyone just accidentally decide to write an application for OS/2 if IBM were still doing it ?

The only part of your changes that I reverted is where you referred to modern Firefox features as "pointless dreck". It is fine for you to have that opinion but articles must be written from a neutral point of view. 2019 Japanese succession

Howdy. Now I gotta deal with a shifting IP over at Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan & Masako, Crown Princess of Japan. Hi @GoodDay: The best way to settle it is with a reference to a reliable source. It seems that the japantoday reference used in Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan#Akihito's pending abdication is expired; do you have another one? A Google search turns up https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/12/31/national/well-wait-mid-april-learn-name-japans-new-era/#.XGD_HWRKjeY which says that Akihito abdicates April 30 and Naruhito accedes the next day May 1. -LiberatorG (talk) 05:11, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

I suspect they're getting confused with the Accession/Era dates. For example: Emperor Akihito ascended the throne on January 7, 1989 & his era began January 8, 1989. I'll just remove the hidden info on those infoboxes & wait until the abdication actually occurs. It's possible, Akihito is abdicating at the end of the day, at midnight. Have you considered getting the WP:ROLLBACK rights, as a fellow vandal fighter, I would suggest you to request it at WP:PERM It will allow you to quickly revert all the edits by Bidhan Singh from his contribution page, and quickly. That LTA you reported to AIV

Hi, I removed that IPv6 you reported AIV. It is a Jio mobile IPv6, which means blocking it 5 hours after the edits occurred would have no impact other than preventing someone else from editing. (talk page watcher) TonyBallioni Please know more about WP:LTA/BS. We have seen instances where the IP has returned after 12 hours to vandalize from the same address. DBigXray, I’m very familiar with how Jio works. It’s a highly dynamic ISP, especially on IPv6, and the ranges are very active. I have no problem blocking disruption that is active or even making range blocks as needed, but typically these cause a lot of collateral damage. My preferred way of dealing with disruption from those ranges is page protection if it is long term. While there may be individual cases of the IP being stable for a long period, this is the exception rather than the rule for this ISP. TonyBallioni (talk) 17:55, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

TonyBallioni. The purpose of my comment above was to let you know about the LTA case page, in case you were not aware. Looking at how WP:LTA/BS works, I think its best to simply block the errant IP rather than range block. Whack a mole basically. FYI: We have seen this user using the same IPv6 /64 block for several days in a row, for example this one was used for 5 days before the whole /64 was blocked. Hi there, I'm hoping you can shed some light on this edit, please. You note "she is not in the lead role; the lead role is played by Nithiin", but I'm unclear on what your position is, exactly. Are we talking about a world where only men can have a lead role? Because that would not be consistent with reality, and it still wouldn't explain why you still indicated that she has a lead role, only that it is a "female lead role". I also don't understand why, when we're talking about a female actor, we would ever need to say "female lead" since that's what a female actor would be playing 9.9/10 times if she had earned a lead role. In contrast, Robin Williams played a female lead role in Mrs. Doubtfire, but then so did Sally Field. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:02, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@Cyphoidbomb: Absolutely there are numerous films where the lead role is played by a woman. This is about reliable sources. In the case of this particular film, the reliable sources consider the lead role to be the one played by Nithiin; some do not even mention Keerthy at all. There would be no issue if the article said that Keerthy had "a lead role" in this film, as there are reliable sources for that, but as for "the lead role" the sources that I found do not back that up. However if you do have a reliable source that states that her role is "the lead role" then please add that reference to the article. -LiberatorG (talk) 20:37, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

I'm still a bit confused, because by that argument, "the lead role is played by Nithiin", would be equally incorrect if there are at least two lead roles. Anyhow, perhaps the better phrasing the contributor could have added would have been with the indefinite article rather than the definite article, ex: "as a lead". Miscalculations in article about Unicode encoding

The character ranges for UTF-8 in the article «Comparison of Unicode encodings» are wrong. The formula for calculating how many possible characters can encode UTF-8 per n-bytes is:

For $n=1$ possible characters are $2^{7}$ or 128

For $n>1$ then the formula is $2^{5n+1}$

Example: For $n=4$

$2^{5n+1}$
$2^{5(4)+1}$
$2^{20+1}$
$2^{21}$
$2,097,152$ 

Therefore, UTF-8 encoding ranges are:

• 128 Unicode characters using 1 byte: encodes for Unicode range between code points U+0000 to U+007F (including both)
• 2048 characters using 2 bytes: The first $128+2048=2176$ covering from U+0080 to U+087F
• 65,536 characters using 3 bytes: $65,536+2048+128=67,712$ covering from U+0880 to U+1087F (covering and exceeding the remaining of Basic Multilingual Plane [which ends in U+FFFF] and covering part of the Supplementary Multilingual Plane)
• And finally, 2,097,152 using 4 bytes: $2,097,152+65,536+2048+128=2,164,864$ which covers and exceeds all the remaining 1,040,399 Unicode code points from U+10880 to U+10FFFF

In the mentioned article, this information is distorted due to miscalculations and the encoding ranges are wrong. Ajñavidya (talk) 03:40, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

@Ajñavidya: In theory UTF-8 could have been defined that way in order to allow more characters to be encoded with fewer bytes, but that isn't how UTF-8 is actually defined. Instead they went with a simpler mapping, where each bit in the Unicode codepoint maps directly to a bit in the UTF-8 representation, with no need for any addition or subtraction of an offset. As a result, the first 128 potential 2-byte encodings (beginning with 0xC0 or 0xC1) are not used because they would duplicate the 128 ASCII characters. Similarly, the first 2048 potential 3-byte encodings, and the first 65536 potential 4-byte encodings, are not used because they would represent characters that already have a shorter encoding. You're right. They chose the easy mapping trade-off instead of the compact but computationally-expensive format that would be required for using the tiny fraction of redundant code points.

My edit comment could have been worded better.
