Scott Gorham

I get your point - I'll try and find out at the music wikiproject which category Scott might fall into. I hadn't considered that he's now singing some of those songs himself, that does make things a bit more complicated! I will have a look at cleaning his article up, I've got some more bits of info that could go in, and those long quotes at the end need to be dealt with somehow. I did a big job on the Thin Lizzy article itself, and I keep meaning to do Phil's, and some of the others too. I recently did an infobox and a bit of a clean-up for Eric Bell, but they could all do with more info. I assume you're in favour? :) Bretonbanquet (talk) 15:47, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Firstly, it looks like "solo singer" is the right field for the infobox - I just looked at the guidance and it basically says that anyone who ever opened his mouth on a record is classed as a "solo singer"! So that probably means all of our Thin Lizzy boys. I totally agree that Scott's article has been way too thin for years. Both he and Robbo deserve a far longer article. Rory's article is a crying shame, and while I'm a fan, I'm not an expert - I'll add it to my list of articles to have a go at though. I'm sure Wikipedia is the first place kids go to try and find out about these guys, so the articles are important! Good luck looking for photos - that's another neglected area, and it's so important too. Hopefully we can start to improve a thing or two! :) Bretonbanquet (talk) 16:00, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

YES, that's the point, that Rory's article IS where kids and adults seek information about him and get almost nothing. That's why the album articles are important- from his interviews taped on You Tube, Gallagher kindly never forgets to mention Van Morrison and Thin Lizzy as other R&B sound-originating blues and rock bands from Ireland. At the same time, the idea of putting out a 45 rpm single scared him to tbhe core, since he didn't want to be labelled and packaged as a "Pop music artist. One very significant reason he didn't want to join the Rolling Stones and was so uncommercialistic that half the industrialized world of record buyers never heard from him and I see so many just stumbling onto him in You Tube. If you have any of his records, I hope you may be wiling to make a few sound bites for the article, perhaps, "Bad Penny", "Tatoo'd Lady", and a couple others. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 20:49, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your message - I'll certainly try to improve Rory's articles where I can. The Fleetwood Mac discography has turned into a decent article, though it certainly wasn't all my own work, sadly! What kind of improvement are you looking to make with the RG discography? Foreign chart positions, perhaps? If we can find them... We should be able to add to the compilations and archival releases too, and maybe add catalogue numbers, labels, dates etc. Also we can make sure the info at the discography matches the album articles. Regarding the album pages, some of them are a bit of a mess - I've started to clean them up a bit, so they can be used a base for adding further info. We can make sure that reviews are there, links to MusicBrainz and Allmusic, and Rolling Stone where possible. The albums look like something I can work on at first, let me know if you have any more ideas. That is, when you can! Plus, you're right that he was a very uncommerical artist, and the article should definitely reflect that. The lack of singles is a good example. I do have most of his records, but I'm afraid I have no idea how to make a sound file for wiki :( I'll investigate it and see if it's something I can figure out. Quick note to say that Wilgar Campbell now has an article - he was a tough guy to find out about! Couldn't find his date or place of birth, and only a vague reference to his date of death. But at least he has a page now, and someone may add something to it now that it exists. Peter Green image

Hi Leahtwosaints, assuming the image is File:Peter Green.jpg, I checked and it has been available on Flickr for about 4 years under a free license - see here for the current Flickr link. Rory Gallagher

Hi Leahtwosaints! Thanks for the kind words about my contributions to the folk rock article - I've still got a long way to go and a lot of work to do until that article is where I want it to be but I'm pleased with what I've done so far. I see from your user page that you do a lot of adding of pictures to music articles. This is interesting to me because I would definitely like to see more pics of musicians on Wikipedia and you're obviously pretty well versed in WP image copyright policy and procedure...so I think that you might be someone worth knowing if I want to add more pictures in the future (I have a specific article in mind but more of that at a later time).

With regards to helping out on the Rory Gallagher article, I'm more than happy to assist you with it but I'm very busy moving house at the moment and will be for the next week or maybe even two weeks, so I won't be able to devote as much time as normal to Wikipedia stuff, I'm afraid. I'm still very much focused on getting the folk rock article ship-shape as well and that's kind of my main Wikipedia priority at the moment but I'm sure I can find time to help out a bit on the Rory Gallagher article. Something you should know though is that I only have a basic knowledge of RG's music and career but then again, that's why the idea of helping out with the article appeals to me - it'll help fill in some gaps in my knowledge. Hi! Yes my e-mail is activated I believe...certainly some Wikipidians have e-mailed me in the past...so drop me a line any time. I think I will probably just start tinkering away with the Rory Gallagher article whenever the fancy takes me, rather than having a rigidly defined starting date. With regards to slide guitarists, I'm a big fan of slide guitar generally and I really enjoy both Ry Cooder and Dave Kelly's playing, as well as Muddy Waters, Bukka White, and Robert Johnson's. However, I think that my all-time favourite slide player is probably Blind Willie Johnson. Simply put, when I hear Johnson's music, it's hard to imagine anyone playing slide guitar with more precision, fluidity and feeling than he does.

Regarding Gallagher winning guitar competitions over Eric Clapton, I can quite believe it. I'm not much of a fan of Clapton...at least, not after he left Cream. I really enjoy Clapton’s work during the 1960s but for me, it was all over for him when he left Cream. Yes, Blind Faith had their moments, as did Derek and the Dominos, but certainly by 1971 it was all over for "slowhand" in my opinion. Now, I know that's a controversial opinion but I just feel that by the early 1970s, Clapton's playing had lost all of the fire and passion that it had during the 1960s - leaving the technically excellent but largely soulless guitarist that we’ve seen for the last 40 odd years. Anyway, I’m rambling on now but my point being that I think that there are a lot of superior guitarists to Clapton - technical virtuosity is largely meaningless for me. --Kohoutek1138 (talk) 14:27, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your invitation to help with unreferenced articles and with the Rory Gallagher article. I certainly will do all I can to help. I'm a little bit busy this time of year with personal projects at home - gardening, for one - but will sign up and help out just as soon as I get a few spare minutes. I'm so glad that you have become interested again in Van Morrison's music because of his article. Makes all the time put in worthwhile to know that it is beneficial to other people as an information/acquaintance source for his music. I mostly admire the fact that he has spent all of his adult life deeply involved with creating and performing new music and songs: almost to the exclusion of any other life for himself and I find most of his music unusually uplifting in mood. Hey Leah. Again, apologies that I haven't gotten back to you. As for a layout for the discography for a start a brilliant layout would be to follow the layout of another artist like The Beatles discography. Generally any album that Rory appears on would be featured on the page - so that'd include the various compilations and "best of" albums. Hi Leah, I really appreciate the Barnstar and all your thoughtfulness. As you probably noticed I did a little work on the Rory Gallagher article. To me the most difficult areas in the article are the list sections: Other Instruments and Tributes. They are mainly unsourced but still contain information that one would hesitate to just discard - athough it seems like it would be difficult to incorporate the material into the article. As you probably noticed, I put the quotations in a Wikiquote page, but there doesn't seem to be such an easy solution for these two lists. What do you think are the most difficult areas for the article? I'll try to make more time to look at it more and do some editing on it in the next few days - almost through with my largest gardening chores now. BLPs etc.

WikiProjects Most of those WikiProjects—especially ones that are tagged by a bot—include their articles by way of categorization. So, if a blues guitarist is in Category:People from Chicago and Category:Musicians from Illinois, he will likely have the appropriate tags added to his talk. As far as I can recall, the "People from X" categories are usually as broad as reasonably possible. If someone was born somewhere, had citizenship somewhere else, and lived or stayed a significant portion his time in a third place, he will be in categories for all three. The exception to this tagging might be if one or more WikiProjects is a parent (or child) to another. That is to say, anything covered in WikiProject Chicago would necessarily be in WikiProject Illinois, so if an article is tagged with the former, it's not strictly necessary to tag it with the latter. Ostensibly, the strength of this is exactly what you mentioned on my talk: the more WikiProjects that cover a topic, the more likely it is to be coordinated toward FA/FL status. If this musician was born in Mississippi, but moved to Chicago as a child and lived the rest of his life there, it's possible that the members of WikiProject Mississippi might not personally be interested in this guy, but nonetheless, the article would fall under their "domain" and could be of interest to them—especially if/when it gets to GA or FA-nomination status. Thin Lizzy and Irish bands

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been busy, not least arguing with another editor over a pointless issue... anyway! Great work with the photos, particularly the one of Downey. Now he's rejoined Thin Lizzy by all accounts, which I think is a great thing, and Wharton too. Not so sure about Ricky Warwick though. That Phil Lynott documentary is excellent - it must be the best thing of its type in existence. I think his page is a really important one to improve - a fairly small amount of work would make a great improvement. The Thin Lizzy band page is not too bad in my opinion (since I wrote it myself!) but any more photos would be great, and other detail / suggestions you have I'd be happy to edit in. I try not to WP:OWN it, but it's difficult sometimes! The band member articles we can add to here and there, and maybe concentrate harder on them later - sometimes I just get an urge to work on one, and I usually go with my urges in that respect. Scott's and Robbo's do need work. I'd like also to work on the album articles at some point. Totally with you on trivia :) I'm very happy to copyedit, format and check for typos and things on Rory's article, but I'll leave the expert info to those who know more about the great man than me. Hi. That's terrific work you're doing. The picture of Iggy that you added to the Protopunk section is superb. That's the only section in this article where a picture of Reed would really be appropriate, and I don't believe we should add him to Iggy there for reasons of both style (visual crowding) and conceptual balance (two of U.S.). I'm glad you want to be friends. I do too. It will be much easier to be friends if you familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. While I am quite aware that "It is often preferable to place images of faces so that the face or eyes look toward the text", that is very much a secondary consideration compared to the necessity to "avoid sandwiching text". Just as you simply cannot sandwich text between left- and right-aligned images, you must not sandwich text between an image aligned to one side and an audio clip box aligned to the other. Just familiarize yourself with that simple but important rule and custom and I'm sure we'll have no trouble working together. The photo is terrific and looks just fine on the right side, where the article structure indicates it be located (we customarily don't put audio boxes on the left side). Hi. Well first - thank you. You ask some interesting questions. I know it's possible to auto-archive your talk page but I don't know how to do it. I always do mine manually, but deleting from my page and then copying into an archive page. I really must find out how to auto-archive. You can set up a bot to do it. Go to User:MiszaBot III, and at the bottom of the page there is a link to explain how to set up to autoarchive. I've never bothered with it, so I don't know if you'll find that helpful or not. The images you've uploaded - that is such a treasure trove, and I compliment you on your efforts there. Outstanding. If you want to hide the list of links to artist names you just need to put a template at the top and bottom of the list. At the top : {{hidden top|title=The title that you want to appear on your page, like List of artists for example}}. At the bottom of the list : {{hidden bottom}} Your user boxes may need to be reorganized. At the moment they are stacked on the right hand side of your page and if you try to collapse any content to "hide" it in the first section of your page, you'll find those userboxes get in the way. I use sandboxes fairly often, and I give them a generic name so that I can reuse them when I've finished with and deleted content. I just add a link onto my page like [[User:Rossrs/sandbox 1]] & [[User:Rossrs/sandbox 2]] etc and while they're in use, I give them a name so a remember what's there, like [[User:Rossrs/sandbox 1|List of people with brown hair]] or something like that. Thanks for that information! ...About Snow Patrol, this is my sixth Book I've created. I'm going to do as many as I can - it's the new thing now, like how portals (which Moxy does) was the new thing sometime ago. The thing about Books, is everything (all articles) about that subject get's to be included, unlike in portals, templates and discographies. I just got done with Book:Iron Maiden, Book:Led Zeppelin. If you want a real challenge, I've another article that's missing photos: Laki Mera I don't think there's as many photos of them as they concentrated more on the recording side. Hello, sorry I should have been more explicit about what is a chapter. I generally tend to think that I was one of the few who didn't know what was a Chapter. I'm not an expert so this is my vision of things, the Chapters act as some kind of intermediate body between the Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation (the basis of the projects and the funding), they are here to ensure a greater visibility of the project and promote it in the diverse societies concerned, they can also receive money for projects and grant you an official Wikipedia status which allows you a better acceptation when you deal with institution to get free material (let's say pictures, texts...) that can be then added in the contents of the Wikipedia. It's got some kind of coordinating role and may give more strength to the Wikipedia. The creation of the Chapters went on and were only statal chapters (Wikimedia Germany, France, Italy or UK for instance) and thus it became a dominant view that the Chapters should work according to statal criterium. Obviously many stateless languages (Catalan, Welsh, Esperanto or Romani for instance) wouldn't obtain a representation in spite of their efforts and contributions if this rule was to be applied restrictively, but the fact is that they've also accepted a New York City Chapter (a city) and Hong Kong (a city/territory) but claim that since those are big territories (the USA and China) it can be cut in diverse pieces... Our association wants this view to be changed so each wikipedia can be entitled to have a Chapter if they strive hard. Music articles

Writing/editing an article about yourself isn't inherently bad if you follow WP:NPOV. These articles seem fairly neutral but low on notability (except Metropolitan; the presence of a sizeable Allmusic bio is pretty convincing). I have prodded a couple. No idea why the Downey photo was removed - unless it's Downey himself removing it (it's a Dublin IP) - in which case I'd personally rather leave it off. But as you say, it'd be nice if he could provide a photo which we could use and he's happy with. I might ask the IP why he removed it. I'll keep you posted. Yeah, I get that - there must be endless photos of frontmen and guitarists, while the drummers are a tougher proposition! I might well email that guy when I get the chance - it'd be nice to see if we could figure out a way where everyone's happy. The Sykes photo is great - about time we had a really good one of him. And yes, a good idea about trying to get a photo of each main member in the article - the changes are quite complicated so photos might make it seem a lot simpler to readers who aren't so familiar with the band. Band members new and old

As far as I know - the members in the infobox do represent the current line-up. Sykes left about a year ago, and subsequently Downey and Wharton rejoined, along with Mendoza, Campbell and Warwick. Unless it's changed again, that's it. As for "deceased", I read somewhere that we're not supposed to do that, but I can't find it now. Just on a personal level, I'm not keen on it. Band members in infobox

Hi Leahtwosaints. I notice that in the musical artist infobox for some band articles, you've added the cross symbol next to the names of deceased members. But, Template:Infobox musical artist specifies that the Current_members and Past_members fields should list the band members "with no other notation than names." This standard is pretty generally followed for band infoboxes. So, the crosses should be removed, and so should the word "deceased" if any infoboxes have that. Thanks!
