Thanks for uploading Image:Sodium hydride.png. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

But i saw the French article and I don't see any real detail which doesn't appear in the English one (apart from the scientific jargon-slang used). Indication:when i can't find a translation for a word, i'll put the ' for the possible translation and the () for the litteral translation. The chemical activity of a 'body'(species) is the influence of a quantity of a 'body'(species) on the Helmholtz free energy of a system. The chemical potential µ_i of a 'body' i is the partial derivative of the Gibbs Free Energy of the system compared to the quantity n_i (number of moles):

$\mu _{i}={\frac {\partial G}{\partial n_{i}}}$

This chemical potential depends on the temperature T, of the pressure p and of the activity a_i according to the formula :

$\mu _{i}(T,p)=\mu _{i}^{0}(T)+R\cdot T\cdot \ln(a_{i})$

where R is the Constant of the Ideal gas and µ_i⁰ is the value of µ_i in 'the 'referential'(referential conditions).

'In case of a gaseous reaction'(Case of a compound in a gaseous milieu)

The activity is of the form :

$a_{i}=\gamma _{i}\cdot x_{i}\cdot {\frac {p}{p_{0}}}={\frac {f_{i}}{p_{0}}}$

where $\gamma _{i}$ is the coefficient of '?'(fugacity) (without dimensions) of the 'body' i, x_i the molar fraction of the 'compound' in the gaseous 'milieu' and p the pressure expressed in bar.

The quantity $f_{i}$ has the dimension of a pressure and is named 'fugacity' : for a pure Ideal gas, the coefficient of 'fugacity' is equal to 1.

p₀ is the standard atmospheric pressure. It is equal to 1 bar and only serves here to 'withdraw?'(delete) the dimensions of the formula. Then, we have:

$\mu _{i}(T,p)=\mu _{i}^{0}(T)+R\cdot T\cdot \ln(\gamma _{i}\cdot x_{i}\cdot {\frac {p}{p_{0}}})$

'in case of a liquid reaction'(case of a compound in a liquid solution)

The activity is of the form :

Where $\gamma _{i}$ is the coefficient of activity of the 'body' i, C_i his concentration in solution expressed in mol.l^-1. the 'term' C₀ is equal to 1 mol·l^-1 and only serves here to 'withdraw'(delete) the dimensions of the formula. Then, we have :

$\mu _{i}(T,p)=\mu _{i}^{0}(T)+R\cdot T\cdot \ln(\gamma _{i}\cdot {\frac {C_{i}}{C_{0}}})$

We will point out that in a liquid solution the activity coefficient of a given ion (ex : Ca²⁺,…) isn't measurable because it is experimentaly impossible to measure independantly the electrochemical potential of a ion in solution. That's why we introduce the notion of 'average activity coefficient'.

Simplification

We simplify sometimes the formulae above considerating that :

• For a chemical solution :
  • the solvant has an activity of 1
  • The activity of a 'soluté'(in French, it is the contrary of solvant, the 'body' which gets dissolved) is equal to the ratio of its concentration over a referential concentration as long as it keeps low values ;
    $a_{i}={\frac {C_{i}}{C_{0}}}$
    Concretely, it is equal to its concentration in mol·l^-1 ;
• For a mix of gas : the activity is equal to the ratio of the partial pressure of the gas over the referential pressure, as long as this pressure keeps low values ;
  $a_{i}={\frac {p_{i}}{p_{0}}}$
  Concretely, it is equal to the partial pressure in Bar (unity) (dealing with a referential pressure of 1 bar)
• For a solid body : a solid, alone in its phase, has an activity of 1.

The chemical activity occurs in the definition of the 'Constant of equilibrum'(?).

Welcome

Thanks Ksbrown for the welcome. Actually I have been a wikipedian on mostly nl:, since they had about 400 pages. I don't come here very often, but my students are now using wikipedia as a source for their P Chem and I need to make sure they do not get confused. So i decided to clean up a bit. It's actually a bit of a mess in thermodynamics I'm afraid.. Details smietails but still: important details.

Re: Stub Message

I do try and tag the ones I am familiar with. Most, if not all the stubs I tag are those from the Newpages list. As such, my primary goal isn't the stubsort, just the removal of useless junk pages. When I come across a small article that doesn't resemble patent nonsense or a n-n bio, I'll stub tag out of courtesy. I also got your note and am making the effort to use specific stub tags. however, I feel very strongly that a lot of articles are only ever going to be short, and that recognising this, and removing the tags, would help. especially all those actors! raining girl 23:06, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
