Reply about Lucky edit

Sorry about that VfD nomination! But that nomination is partially inspired by looking through the Category:Pages on votes for deletion, and I found some listing happened to be users.

Anyway, I will now leave Lucky's user page alone. It's just that at one time, I was put onto RfC which was intimidating for me. --SuperDude 06:13, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

note to Lucky edit

I just left a note. Also, I remember a time when somebody said that Wikipedians will start throwning muck, and that was a euphanism for anger over problematic edits that I thought were legitimate contributions.

In the past, my original intent of making Superdude was to have a fresh re-start on my habit of contributing to Wikipedia since SamuraiClinton was put up for RFC, but now I realize that sockpuppets will be detected! --SuperDude 06:37, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Did you know? edit

Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article chromoblastomycosis, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

I guess it's not really your field but I wondered if you could take a look at the polydnavirus article with a view to expansion. It's not my field either and I have done all I can with it for now. More eyes/grey cells would be very helpful. [195.157.197.108 (talk · contribs)]

Hi Again and other subjects edit

Hi how are you doing? Aren't you an admin now? Thats cool. Anyway I have this question about templates that I thought you might know the answer to. I've made this warning box on my user page and I want to condense the box on the editing page so that it only needs to have a template tag. Do you know how to make something into a template? If you don't, it's not that important, but if you do I think it would be a lot easier. Rentastrawberry 21:47, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Block and blocklog tabs edit

Hi KS, Fuzheado, now an admin, doesn't seem to have the block and block log tabs visible to him on user and user talk pages. He asked me how to set it up, but as you did it for me, I have no idea; and I remember you explained it to me, but I still had no idea. ;-) Would you mind telling him how to do it? He's been experiencing a few block conflicts because it's awkward for him to check the log. SlimVirgin (talk) 02:46, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I just found the note you left for me about it back in April, so I've copied that to Fuzheado's page, and that may be enough for him. SlimVirgin (talk) 02:59, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks folks, I've created the .js file, and think it's a great feature. Any other cool tab hacks out there? Fuzheado | Talk 17:57, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I kind of went slow/short with the archiving because I was concerned about screwing it up and loosing stuff. Anyway, your archive and talk page lengths seem to make sense and I'll try to keep more control in the future. Thanks for getting me off the dime on this, I 'preciate (to quote George W.) your suggestion. ;-) hydnjo talk 17:47, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi Knowledge Seeker,

I was interested in your comment on Talk:Main_Page#Pic_Of_The_Day about the demotiviting effects of WP:FPC. I'm sure you are not alone in this; I know of at least two other editors who have been put off by the FPC process, and I've had some of my own photos savaged, so I know what it is like. I've often tried to think of ways to improve the guidelines to reduce the negative impact of criticism whilst still maintaining a quality bar. If you have any suggestions for improvements I would be interested. -- Solipsist 7 July 2005 09:45 (UTC)

SPUI's user page edit

I edited SPUI's user page because it contained offensive content. SPUI sometimes also places offensive and vulgar words in the sandbox. The words "ANAL" and "GAY SEX" on his page is not really suitable. If you think I have done anything wrong, I do apologize. I just thought that bad content should be immediately removed. Should we discuss this matter with other Wikipedians to be sure that SPUI's user page is really OK to stay here? — Stevey7788 (talk) 00:19, 13 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Knowledge Seeker, since you don't think the material is really appropiate either, I just thought I'd stop by and say that I have requested that it be taken down myself, feel free to second my request. Y0u (Y0ur talk page) (Y0ur contributions) 19:42, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Away note edit

Hello Knowledge Seeker,

So you are moving up North! Hmmm, progress on Bengali grammar articles has considerably been slowed down due to your absence. Hope to see you back soon. We need to get that transliteration table up somewhere. Any ideas where might be a good place? Cheers and good luck moving.

-- Urnonav 03:47, 13 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hey congratulations on your real world achievement. Good to know that I can now also seek professional advice from you on non-Wikipedia stuff. OK, now coming back to our little knowledge world, I put up a table of transliteration and pronunciation guideline (that got registered as anon due to my stupidity and self-inflicted sleep deprivation) on the Bengali script page. If you get time, could you check the IPA symbols? Thanks. -- Urnonav 06:46, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Informing DYK authors edit

Hi, MacGyverMagic, thanks for all the work you do on WP:DYK. I love seeing the new articles Wikipedia is producing. I was wondering though why you removed the "Older articles" section whose authors hadn't been informed. From your edit summary it appears to be intentional. Did you feel that too much time had passed and that it wasn't worth informing people any more, or perhaps that if no one was going to inform them, that you might as well remove the entries? — Knowledge Seeker 23:30, 12 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, that was pretty much it. The size of the page was becoming unwieldy and I wanted to keep the archive, hoping AllyUnion's bot would come back to do an automatic update on it soon. So removing something from the inform these authors section was my best option. If you think it's important to still contact them, feel free to do so, so the section could be cut down without any such problems. Cheers! - Mgm|(talk) 04:59, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Bangla article edit

Hello

I was just editing the Bangla article when I noticed my changes were removed and the article reverted to an older revision.

I hate to sound rude, but may I ask why? I realize some of my italicized Bangla translations may have been superfluous, but as a researcher of Bangla linguistics (particularly phonetics and phonology), I feel that those sections need editing. Not only are their grammatical mistakes in the English, but the information is misleading and/or inaccurate.

Please let me know why my revisions are not being considered.

Thanks, Sameer ud Dowla Khan UCLA Department of Linguistics [70.33.82.99 (talk · contribs)]

I came with the same question actually. I just saw the rv. I know at least two of the edits involved a crucial error. There are 11 vowels and there can't be 52 consonants, since there are 52 letters, maximum, which I think got reduced by one after "lee" was removed. Could you explain why the rv was needed?

Sheep Vote edit

In response to your comment about the Sheep Votes article and my response to it in the author's talk page: I'm not sure if you referring to the current version or the version before I removed the attack. I'm going to save myself a post and assume you meant the latter (although I do not believe this is the case).

In it, it singled out a specific user and their voting policies in an article in the Wikipedia namespace. While this may not be the more extreme form of attack (using profanity and the like) I'd say it comes close to being just as bad. Specifically condeming the actions of a user (consistently voting in a certain way without justification), and then associating such actions with Grumpiness and eccentricity is an attack. There are recourses for disagreements with a user, but this was not such an effort. It was an attempt to make a point.

"In the past, many contributors have found their Wikistress levels rising, particularly when an issue important to them has been handled in a way they consider unfair. The contributor may point out inconsistencies, perhaps citing other cases that have been handled differently. And the contributor may postulate: "What if everyone did that?" - a common rhetorical technique. These devices may not persuade for the reasons cited above.

In this situation, it may be tempting to illustrate the point using either parody or some form of breaching experiment. For example, the contributor may apply the decision to other issues in a way that mirrors the policy the contributor objects to. These activities are generally disruptive: i.e., they require the vast majority of nonpartisan editors to clean up after the "proof". Many consider such "point-proving" acts to be vandalism."

This isn't the same exact situation as cited, but it is still an obvious disruption. The article has to be removed and debated... etc.

Sorry, if my tone comes off as hostile, as I am not upset. =) -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING) 05:48, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm just curious, which revision were you referring to? Thanks. -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING) 06:10, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Newset Articles edit

I have seen that the Picture of the day section has been put on the front page in place of the Newest Articles section. Three things: First, have the newest articles section been moved? Second, is there still a link somewhere that tells us what the newest articles are, and third, if we keep the picture of the day section on the main page then why do we have it also on the community portal? If that newest articles section is in fact gone, maybe instead it can take the place of the old picture of the day section. If you can, talk to the other admins about this. I would appreciate it because I always thought looking at the newest articles were interesting. Rentastrawberry 05:05, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

Adminship edit

Hi Knowledge Seeker. Thanks for the very nice note on my talk page, and sorry for the delay in answering. I am also currently rather busy with other work, and cannot visit Wikipedia as often as I wanted to. Congratulations on becoming a doctor by the way. About your Adminship: You're a good admin, and I am very glad that I nominated you. Somehow, when I first had a contact with you, I really liked your calm style, trying to bring common sense and neutrality into a heated discussion. Unfortunately, back then you had only about 600 edits, so I decided to wait till you got 1000 edits. And luckily, your nomination went through with no problems at all. You are only the second admin I nominated (the other one is user:Lupo, also a very good pick). Keep up the good work, and don't get stressed out too much about it. (I recently had a tough phase while trying to defuse a POV dispute, taking a lot of stress and doing a lot of reverts. That wasn't too pretty.) Anyway, best wishes and happy editing -- Chris 73 Talk 10:10, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
