Regarding the use of "van der Waals" or "Van der Waals" in text

It is indeed listed as "van der Waals" in "APPENDIX 9-1: recommended spelling list" of "The ACS Style Guide (2006)". However, their recommendation is wrong. The proper way to write Dutch surnames can be found on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_name#Surnames. This is a matter of writing names correctly.

The same applies to "Van 't Hoff" or "van 't Hoff".

Furthermore, the ACS recommended spelling list is inconsistent: van der Waals VandenHeuvel van’t Hoff–Le Bel (use en dash, see p 124) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.83.182.84 (talk) 21:23, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

From van (Dutch): "Derivative terms like van der Waals radius (Dutch: vanderwaalsstraal) the "v" is not capitalised, unless it is the first word of the sentence." Motivations are WP:ACRONYMTITLE and naming consistency within Category:Nuclear magnetic resonance. The consensus seems to be spelling out NMR in article titles. External Links removed from "Physics Education" page

Hello!

I am new to wiki-editing, so I wondered if perhaps I stepped on a rule or something. In my recent additions to the page "Physics Education", under the "Major areas of research" I included some external links within the paragraph text to different curriculum web-pages.

I see that they have been tagged as "dead links" and removed. Was this because it was inappropriate to have external links in the paragraph text? Should they have been references instead?

They certainly were live, I tested them and they led to the right pages...

The guidelines are at WP:NOTLINK and WP:EL. Concepts should be integrated into the body of the article; unique resources that can't be integrated are potential external links. A good rule from WP:ELNO is that "one should generally avoid providing external links to any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article." --Kkmurray (talk) 01:09, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Department of the Gulf

Thanks for adding the additional references to the page. I'm working on Winfield Scott Edgerly. When I looked for the department (ones of his last commands), I found it was a redirect to Army of the Gulf. I didn't realize that your internal text used the word "Department," so I turned the redirect into an article. I hope I haven't confused anything you had on your to-do list. I don't know right now if the department on "my" page traces its lineage to the department on "your" page. The Army probably doesn't know either. More research to follow. If it is the same entity, it can be one article. Mass spectrometry template

Dear K K Murray,

In the template {{mass spectrometry}}, you removed the item "NEMS" which I added recently. You said in the comment "reverted good faith edit. That is a size of a mass spectrometer, not a type". Well, at least thank you for the "good faith".

I am afraid that this is a misunderstanding. NEMS-MS does not mean a microminiaturised mass spectrometer (as e.g. developed by the UK start-up Microsaic, see Miniature mass spectrometer). It refers to a new kind of analysis by detecting the frequency shift caused by the adsorption of the particles on a NEMS resonator. I invite you to consider the articles cited in the stub I created Nanoelectromechanical systems mass spectrometer (and to which the item "NEMS" on the template was linked).

It is not (yet?) a commercial instrument, but I think it deserves being mentioned in the Wiki encyclopedia. It is being developed by several research groups.

Yes, you are correct. I thought that you meant a MEMS based mass spectrometer. I didn't realize that nanoresonator mass measurement devices were being referred to as mass spectrometers, but it has made it to the secondary MS literature (e.g. doi:10.1002/mas.21495). This doesn't fit the IUPAC definition of mass spectrometer, but the question of where mass spectrometry stops and particle size and mass measurement begins seems to be an open one. --Kkmurray (talk) 13:55, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

Links Removed

Hello, my links you removed provide actually photos of the Southwest Louisiana Refuge Complex and Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. The photos are not some random photo of a duck taken in Missouri to depict a duck photo on Sabine NWR for instance. All my wildlife photos are taken mostly on Sabine NWR, Cameron Prairie NWR, and Lacassine NWR otherwise known as the SWLA Refuge Complex. Removing the links, I feel, would be limiting viewers to the 2 or 3 photos on the page. Were I have hundreds of photos in my portfolio taken directly on the property. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
