License assessment edit

Hi King of Hearts. Would you mind taking a quick look at File:Seymour Indiana Public Library.tiff and File:Colonel Samuel Wells.jpeg? I think they're probably OK as licensed based upon their file descriptions, but there's really no source information provided to allow a more thorough verification. The library photo can actually be seen here and here. The second site show a reverse image of a post card the photo appeared on that looks like it was postmarked in 1908. The other photo looks like a Civil War Era photo, but I can't find it anywhere online. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:53, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think it's OK. For image copyright, we care about probabilistic truth, not verifiability. When we write an article, "is this fact actually true" matters less than "is this fact widely accepted by mainstream experts in the field". But when image licensing is concerned, it's all about the former: is there significant doubt about whether the license is correct? So sources which would normally not be considered WP:RS are acceptable for verifying things like publication dates, as long as there is no reason to believe that the information is incorrect. -- King of ♥ 03:12, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking a look at these. The uploader did subsequently add source links to each file's page after I queried them about the files; so, they should be OK now, but I understand what you're saying about reliable sources as it applies to images. My concern was mainly that the images had to come from somewhere since the uploader wasn't claiming them as "own work" and knowing where they came from probably would be helpful. I'm also assuming that these are OK to be moved to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:36, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Maybe you could also take a look at WP:MCQ#yearbooks. The OP is the same person as the uploader, and the "scolding" they're referring two might be my interactions with them so far. I don't want to put them off, and I've tried to explain what needs to be done (or at least what I think needs to be done) over on their Commons user talk page about the hotel photo, but I'm not sure exactly which photo (or photos) they've been trying to use comes from a yearbook. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
