Mangalore Rainfall

Hi Kensplanet,

The Rainfall figures for Mangalore are incorrect as they are 10% of the actual figures. The legend "precipitation in mm" cannot be changed to "precipitation in cm". Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ardsouza

== Need for sympathy towards the too many anti-Christian violence articles ==

There is a question of garnering donations from America and Europe with sob stories of anti-Christian violence, involved in the large number of articles being posted on anti-Christian violence in India, with seperate articles for each and every incident for whatever reason on anyone bearing a seemingly Christian name. This is good for India also because it brings in foreign direct investment. I have therefore, decided not to induce any more NPOV in this and similar articles because they are only belly-filling exercises by resourceful missionaries; and as such deserve sympathy.Jobxavier (talk) 09:45, 11 October 2008 (UTC) Jobxavier (talk) 09:45, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kenneth, been busy lately, and I guess I will be so this month. Don't think I can devote too much time to copyediting till Diwali. A word

Apropos of your edit summary here - I'm sorry but I do not need to "contact" you or anybody else to move an article. There is such a thing as a WP:BOLD and I moved it because the two articles struck me as dealing with the exact same thing. If you disagree (and you are perfectly entitled to your disagreements), the way to go about it is to simply revert and/or ask on the talk page. Having thought of you as a rather laid back and pleasant editor, I'm taken aback by your choosing to vent your spleen in such a manner. Anyway, I will add {merge}} tags to the article and we can discuss it there. Thanks. Sarvagnya 18:54, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello Kensplanet, sorry for the very very late response. I have been really busy with University and hence I haven't been that active on Wikipedia. I am temporarily back though it won't be for that long!! :(( As for the question you asked me, the procedure is quite complicated and time-consuming. When I was in talks with the people of IndiaFM to use the images on their site, they indicated to me that we were allowed to use any images that came from "on the sets" and "events", such as award functions, music releases, etc. We are allowed to use these images as they have been taken exclusively and personally by the IndiaFM photographers team. So I am pretty sure that there shouldn't be a problem regarding the image you wanted to use on the specified article.

We cannot just upload the images and stick on the IndiaFM tag with the OTRS ticket number. This is what it says on the template documentation: "Don't just upload images from there and put this license on it - all images from IndiaFM must be verified, individually or in small batches, by OTRS. This may be considered inconvenient, but it is a lot more inconvenient for people to have to delete all the images because one person may have done it wrong." As for the uploading technique, here I go... lol.. It is a very long and complicated process... To avoid the mess like what was the case with the Bollywood Blog images, we have to upload images in batches, for e.g. three-four images. BUT it must first have to pass through the OTRS system. You have to e-mail them at "permissions@wikimedia.org", providing the links of the pictures from the IndiaFM website and the original ticket number of the agreement between the IndiaFM people and I regarding the use of their images. (The original ticket number can be seen on the image's page where it says: "For reference, the correspondence with indiaFM can be viewed at...") Then after that, you upload it onto Commons, adding an OTRS pending tag. When an OTRS member comes across the image, he/she will go find your e-mail and then replace the OTRS pending tag with the permission ticket. Just a reminder that the OTRS members take quite a while to ticket the images!! Note: the permission ticket is different for all images as the ticket is when you sent your e-mail to them. See take a look at these images for yourself: (It is right above the "File History") Image:KareenaKapoor.jpg & Image:Zinta IIFA 04.jpg. If you have any questions regarding this long and confusing process, feel free to let me know. BTW, if you want me to upload the image for you and are in no rush, I have no problem!! Just a reminder that the OTRS members take quite a while to ticket the images!! So you will have to wait a while!! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Red links and edit summaries

Rev. Keep two things in mind:

  1. Please NO "All caps" in edit summaries – It's construed as hostile and shouting, not to mention immature on WP.
  2. There is no policy on not having red links. Red links are part and parcel of Wikipedia, and encourages editors to create articles. While red links do look bad on a featured article, the best way to combat this is for the FAC nominator to create stub articles. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:43, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

What's wrong with Almas Heshmati et al. view on globalization in India?

Dr. Amit Kumar Bhandari (a very promising younger Indian economist from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) in Calcutta) et al in Heshmati (a world class Swedish economist, who worked a long time with the United Nation's WIDER Institute in Helsinki and who is now among others Professor in Seoul's KNU, among the top 5% of the world's economists according to the IDEAS/REPEC criteria of Number of Works, Number of Distinct Works, Number of Distinct Works, Weighted by Number of Authors, Number of Journal Pages, Number of Journal Pages, Weighted by Number of Authors, Number of Abstract Views in RePEc Services over the past 12 months, Number of Downloads through RePEc Services over the past 12 months Number of Abstract Views in RePEc Services over the past 12 months, Weighted by Number of Authors, Number of Downloads through RePEc Services over the past 12 months, Weighted by Number of Authors) and associates portray a valid picture about liberalization, globalization and development in India. What's so wrong with it that you simply erased it? And you also erased the Tony Blair quote - which reminds especially us Europeans not to project superiority complexes onto this important nation, and democracy. If you do not agree with the presentation, at least include the argument in other style and in a condensed fashion, but simply erasing it is without justification. Roadmap to Bangalore was recently very positively reviewed in the "Journal of Common Market Studies", one of the leading social sciences journals in the world, and how come that you simply erase the entry, once and for all? Re. Help required

Hello Kensplanet. Do you have a link for that article? I am currently very busy off-wiki and might not have time to do that translation very soon. But please let me have a look. Yes, "Nossa Senhora de Salvação" means "Our Lady of Salvation". Best regards, Húsönd 20:43, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh. I thought that Nossa Senhora de Bom Concelho was the name of an article somewhere. If it's just to translate that, it makes the task much easier. "Concelho"" means "municipality" in Portuguese. Perhaps the best translation would be "Our Lady of the Good County", as municipality would sound rather odd. Regards, Húsönd 21:22, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Mangalorean Catholics

Thank you for giving me more background. Overall, I'm stunned by the quality of sources you've gathered to address a notable, large group of people with a fascinating history. There must be many communities like this which other encyclopedias will never successfully research and document. The article represents precisely the sort of thing Wikipedia can provide like no other encyclopedia. It is unique as well as useful, interesting and engaging. Some complain Wiki is full of Pokemon and pop culture (though I'm sympathetic to their inclusion). But articles like yours are where Wikipedia seriously engages with "the people".

I think I need to look more closely at each reference to see what it is being used to establish. I think our issue is that we need to be more "specialist" in examining reliability in articles like MC. Broad guidelines are excellent, multiple editors considering the decisions is an excellent help. But it would be good if everyone was clear about the unique value of such articles—a Wiki specialty, if you like—and generous with time and consideration of what reliability means in their context.

In other words, yes, I agree with you (though I should check further) that it seems reasonable to have time to address source reliability in detail. I think both you and I agree that it's natural for other responsible editors to have more questions about sources for these articles than in other cases, and they do ask the right sort of questions.

I feel your frustration at the moment, and I am deeply concerned. Others are doing what they think is right, yet grieving someone who has clearly taken sourcing as matter of top priority, and been judicious in selection of sources. I know Redtigerxyz to be an extremely hard working contributor himself. Perhaps I don't understand the process well, must you wait a very long time for another bid for GA? Opinions regarding reliability

I am proud that India's tragedy is Australia's also, may those who suffer together learn to love together.

Indiancatholics.com

"The Indiancatholic.com is owned and maintained by the Office of the Spokesperson and the Media/Information Office of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India." The Media/Information Office was established as the "Public Relations Office in 1992". They claim to be "the most popular Church News and Information Service on the Internet from India."

They are a public relations office, hence represent an authoritative, but self-interested, source of information regarding matters within their jurisdiction—the CBCI. This jurisdiction includes Mangalore Catholics. However, they are not a reliable source of their own popularity.

Some articles are written by contributors external to the Office, but reviewed by professionals. Regarding historical information, better sources should be obtained. Regarding contemporary and local opinions and matters of self-identification, it is a valid and reliable source.

Daijiworld.com

Daijiworld claim "100,000 individuals from around 180 countries" visit their site daily. I can only repeat that a Wiki editor who specialises in Wiki standards regarding RS has confirmed that an e-paper, with a named editor-in-chief and published head office address is acceptable.

Magalorean.com

Dear Ken, I consider this a reliable source, but you are right, controversial claims should not be sourced on this site. However, the photographic documentation of the events is outstanding. I think those underline the value of local e-papers to Wikipedia. I suppose photographs can be doctored or mis-captioned, but there is nothing controversial here. How better could we convince someone an event took place in a local community than to show photographs of that event published in a local e-paper?

I trust David M. Cheney, but Wiki cannot. But we can cite the sources he cites, and those are reliable (the Bibliography, that is, and maybe the web-sites). Perhaps you need to isolate the references that he used to produce the information you use. Additionally, it is a convenient online summary of information based on those reliable sources, which contains no advertising and costs nothing to visit—an excellent External link.

I will be busy for a few weeks. Please don't forget me, I love your work. Alastair Haines (talk) 13:52, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
