Collections Management Systems Analysis

The obvious benefits to this management system is its ease of use and the fact that it is digital. Everything is right in one spot and once the information is available the record can be updated easily and efficiently. I was interested in how public art was catalogued and I wanted to experience how a museum's management system functioned. I must say, though, that I found it difficult to get used to the mass amounts of information and how that information was organized. I performed a few different searches in order to familiarize myself with the system. Once I was given my results, I did like that I had the option to change the view of those results. I think that not only gives the user an option, but it also enables interaction and control.

I looked at the Opus sculpture by Harvey Fite. It took me a moment to realize how I had gotten to the record or how the search works but I was able to eventually figure it out. I found the information to be useful as it listed the current owners of the piece, the object type and the fact that it is site-specific. This is interesting information that is not always easy to find. What I did have a problem with was the fact that the "condition" had no condition listed at all, only that it was surveyed 15 years ago and needed treatment. The record had two images available, both of which opened in a separate tab.

Indiana SOS!

Researching and using the Indiana SOS! system was a very useful way to familiarize ourselves with different techniques and systems. Because most other management systems now are digital and online, it was beneficial to see how it worked in an analogue context. The obvious downfalls of this system are the potential inaccuracies. With the inability to update it as new information becomes available, it becomes somewhat outdated and often useless. It does not seem effective or efficient to keep an analogue database or system as society becomes more and more technologically advanced.

Wikipedia

I found my articles through the homepage and the links to the right of the page. They have set up the site to assist a person who has no idea how to start. They have put the topics into single links that direct the user to the Portal page. I clicked on the Arts link and it took me to the Portal:Arts page. It seems to be some sort of introduction to the arts and what they have to offer on the subject. I think this idea of a "homepage" for our database or category might be useful. It also has an area for WikiProjects and categories within this page. At the top of the page, they define art and link to the Art page. The Art page seems a little loaded and it seems like they took on a lot to try and define such an abstract term.

I went to the category link on the Arts portal page and I clicked on the page which took me to the subcategories within Jazz music. I thought this might be relevant because it is an art form and can offer a different look of things. It has links to various radio stations, films, genres, awards, etc, all of which are relevant to Jazz music. I think this could be helpful to keep in mind as we are working on our articles. We could keep subcategories and other relevant topics in mind.

Other categories I think might be useful for the project are the and the categories. Both of which deal directly with our topic and I think most of the people in the class might be on the same page. It seems the most relevant and obvious. I think that if we can relate our category to another category or think of a subcategory within ours, that might be a useful way to organize 40 sculptures.

Charging Bull

I chose the Charging Bull article because I have always been interested in the sculpture as it is very popular and I have never had the opportunity to see it. I wanted to see how the article was written and discussed as it is closely related to our Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia Saves Public Art! because it is a piece of public art. The article first presents information on the sculpture's dimensions, location, weight and medium. It continues on to describe the meaning of the bull and why it was built. This information is all contained within the first paragraph. The following paragraphs explain the bull's construction and installation process, who owns the bull, and the bull as a tourist attraction. I think the article has a lot of great information but it does leave out the condition of the sculpture, which I think would be useful to know. The information given is extremely useful and I think that if this sort of information is available to us regarding our sculptures then we should use it. The background information makes the sculpture more relatable and familiar. For example, if we can find from where the sculpture was commissioned, if it was ever damaged, if it was originally in another location in Indianapolis or IUPUI, or any sort of background information, that would be extremely useful for the reader.

Laocoön

The Laocoön group, now located in the Vatican Museum in Rome, is an ancient sculpture with a significant amount of controversy. Attributed by Pliny the Elder, there is question as to when exactly the sculpture was actually prduced. Also, the artists, Agesander of Rhodes, Athenodoros and Polydorus are in question. I was curious to see how the article was formatted and how the sculpture was represented.

The article begins with a brief introduction to the sculpture and the article outline is situated below this. I think the idea of an introduction then an outline might be useful to us for the final project. If every student were consistent in opening the article with general sculpture information and moving on to explaining how the article is outlined, it gives the reader an option and an opportunity to choose whether they want to continue reading or not. This would also create a consistency within our own database. For example, we could have the artist, location and the date. For some sculptures or pieces of art, this may be the only bit of information available but if we all stay consistent on this, I think it would be a success.

Pliny the Elder

I found this article through links and navigation. I am also familiar with Pliny's writing as I have researched him extensively. He was a Philosopher who lived during the height of the Roman Empire. He chose to write a book called Natural History, which covered every topic from art to religion to geology. He literally discussed everything any person would have known about during that time. It was like an encyclopedia. Because his word was considered the ultimate and final word during his lifetime, I was also interested to see how he was represented. He is not a piece of artwork nor is he an artist but his documents and writings are crucial to the ancient art world.

The article is extremely extensive and covers his entire life including the details of his death. He had many different careers and this article covers each of them. At the end, there are notes and an extensive bibliography which is helpful to the reader. We will need to make sure we include a bibliography with any additional research we are able to find. The article also includes many photos and even a map showing where Pliny spent his time as commander, which is also useful to the reader. Kenjenki (talk) 18:26, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
