Hello, I'm SpinningCeres. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, David W. Orr, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. SpinningCeres 19:47, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Keep Colorado Wild. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page David W. Orr, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Edit summary indicates you were asked to edit article by the subject. Please clarify if that is not the case. SpinningCeres 19:48, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

DEAR SPINNING CERES. THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN. THE SUBJECT OF THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE, DAVID W. ORR, ASKED ME TO UPDATE HIS WIKIPEDIA PAGE. I AM NEW AT THIS AND I HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT HOW TO CITE A SOURCE WHEN THE SUBJECT OF THE ARTICLE IS THE SOURCE. PLEASE HELP ME. THANK YOU.

First, please don't type in all caps. Second, unfortunately the rules for conflict of interest and paid editing are very clear so you'll need to review them if you have a COI. If you have/are/will be paid for editing, then you must follow the guidelines at WP:PAID. If you've not been paid then it's a bit easier and most of the information you will need is directly in the text above without having to click through the guidelines.
With that said the paragraph you added doesn't appear to have any issues at first glance. If you've just been asked to make the change and your job/family/whatever is not related to him then I think you can go ahead and make the change again with something like the edit summary you used the first time. If you do have some connection to him, then you should put the template listed above next to propose changes and the verbatim changes/additions on the article talk page. You can include inline citations with <ref>LINK TO SOURCE HERE</ref>. SpinningCeres 21:32, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi SpinningCeres. Sorry about the caps. I am a peer of David Orr and I have no personal or professional gain from editing his wikipedia article. I will read through your advice carefully and try to adhere to wikipedia's guidelines. Thank you. Keep Colorado Wild

Sorry, but this does not adhere to our guidelines: it is written in an obviously promotional tone. I know you are not done with it, but the tone needs work. Drmies (talk) 02:37, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the helpful feedback. You're right, I'm still working on it and didn't realize that you would be able to see this draft. Thank you.Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 15:23, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

(talk) Would you please point out examples of the "promotion tone". Would that language be acceptable if I quoted the publication source? Thx. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 15:28, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • "Orr became well known for his pioneering work at the Environmental Studies Center at Oberlin College, that still serves as a model of how institutions of higher learning have a broad responsibility to walk the talk of "ecoliteracy"." "Pioneering" is not a neutral term, unless we're talking about things in the past that have had enough time to become fact, rather than opinion. Einstein and Levi-Strauss and Heisenberg's work, that's pioneering, we can say that objectively now. In this case, it would have to be ascribed to a reliable source of some weight, but it isn't--in fact, it's from this (which actually doesn't say "pioneering"), a promotional piece advertising a talk the subject gave at an institute, published by that institute. "Still serves as a model" could be a neutral statement, but here it is not sourced to a reliable secondary source. Worse, the source is an interview with the subject, so is it the subject himself who said it? Again, this needs to be ascribed. And "walk the talk", for all its cuteness, is not neutral either. So there are things to do here, yes, on sourcing, on tone, on ascription. Drmies (talk) 17:03, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

(talk) Ahh. I understand now. Thank you for taking the time to explain why some of the language may be interpreted as promotional. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:David Orr-2010.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:David Orr-2010.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. File permission problem with File:David Orr-2010.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:David Orr-2010.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 14:48, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Message received. I appreciate your help since I am not a copyright attorney and the wikimedia requirements are complex. I will ask the owner of the photograph to submit a statement to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 15:42, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, I can see that a COI query was made on this page earlier, and you have sort of admitted to some sort of relationship, possibly, but it's not quite clear what. In any case, the COI disclosure needs to be made expressly and clearly, so that it is obvious to any editor looking at your user and/or user talk pages. Please attend to this matter now. Thank you, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 19:02, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I have no conflict of interest with the subject of this Wikipedia page, David W. Orr. What information do you need for me to prove this? Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 20:07, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
You said above that Orr asked you to update his page(we prefer the term "article"). That is a conflict of interest. Please read WP:COI. Note that it is not his page, but an article about him. 331dot (talk) 20:12, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Because I have an interest in the topic of sustainability, I reached out to David Orr to ask why his current work wasn't listed in the article about David Orr. He expressed interest in having the Wikipedia page updated. I expressed interest in learning how to update the article. I am not getting paid for working on the Wikipedia page, I have no relationship with David Orr other than as an acquaintance. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 20:32, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
You don't have to be paid or gain something to have a conflict of interest. (paid editing is different) You have been in communication with an article subject regarding an article about them and are editing on their behalf. That is a conflict of interest. Please read WP:COI. 331dot (talk) 20:43, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I suggest you re-read the above and disclose. It is very clear you have some sort of conflict of interest - it doesn't mean it has to be solely financial. PICKLEDICAEšŸ„’ 20:12, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi. Please tell me how I should disclose a purported conflict of interest. I've known of David Orr's work for 20 years because I have also worked in the field of environmental education. I have never worked for him or with him on any projects. Janna Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 21:57, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please see WP:COI for instructions; if you find the coding too complicated(no problem, many do) you may simply write a statement on your user page stating that you have a COI with that topic. That page also has information on best practices(as does this plain language explanation). 331dot (talk) 22:00, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have offered an update to the Wikipedia article about David W. Orr. I stated in my edit summary that "I have a conflict of interest in that I worked in a similar field as the subject of the article, David Orr, in the past (1995-2003). I have never worked with or for David Orr. I am not being paid to edit this Wikipedia article. I am updating this article because it is woefully incomplete." Are you able to review the changes to the article I've suggested, please. Thanks for your help. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 21:25, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
You have repeatedly said and implied that Orr is not good with computers and you are helping on his behalf, so one would assume you're contacting him and vice versa. That is a conflict of interest, it's no different than him trying to edit directly. WP:COI - read on how to disclose. PICKLEDICAEšŸ„’ 22:01, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'll try to figure out how to disclose and avoid any COI. Should I just suggest changes in the article about David Orr on my talk page? Thanks for your help. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Persistent COI edits

edit

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing David W. Orr for the persistent addition of promotionally-toned content in an article where you have a conflict of interest. The article talk page remains open for your to make suggested edits as outlined at WP:COI.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}. Ā Ponyobons mots 20:31, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • You've been here for a while now; people have been pointing out to you that these edits are promotional. In addition, I indicated in my summary what else was problematic and I am not going to repeat that. If you are going to ask me to point out in detail what I found problematic in your edits, you can ask me that, but NOT in the edit summary while you are again inserting the same material. So that you are now blocked from directly editing the article strikes me as a logical consequence. Drmies (talk) 21:00, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for taking the time to reply. I wish I knew someone who is a Wikipedia expert with the time to explain to me in layman's terms what I did wrong. It's sad that there are Wikipedia pages for many of David Orr's peers and students. David W Orr deserves as much. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 21:22, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
      • He has a page. You were editing it. Doesn't mean you get to fill it up with what is essentially a resume. If you work in the same field, surely you understand the difference between primary and secondary sources. In layman's terms: you were padding his resume with unacceptable sources. Drmies (talk) 21:35, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I hear you. But I'm still struggling to understand where "I padded his resume with unacceptable sources." Today I added a paragraph to the Wikipedia article about David W Orr about his involvement in the Meadowcreek Project. There are no primary sources of references listed, no padding of information. Are you able to see that paragraph? Did the citations not transfer correctly from my sandbox to the Wikipedia page? Thank you. Keep Colorado Wild (talk) 22:05, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
