There are some words that are the same, but most words are not. I can write about 5 sentences on your hometown in Pidgin, but that does not mean that the next person would come along and say I am wrong and completely change it. It doesn't make sense to lock almost every editor out of these articles because two users have a dispute. When there's only two, the edit warring is limited substantially by the three-revert rule. Thank you for your note. I'm happy to have your help in finding middle ground, and greatly appreciate your kind and gentle words. Insofar as the disagreements I've been having lately with others on some of the Hawaii based articles, most of them seem to be based on context. On the one hand, you have people who believe that things like the Apology Resolution are factual accounts of history. Once you believe that, and have internalized that as a world-view, my challenges and edits seem irrational and rude. On the other hand, you have people who have read not only the post-1970 "Hawaiian Renaissance" literature, which has led people to believe that the U.S. overthrew and imprisoned Liliuokalani, but have been curious enough to go back to the source materials from the time, and have been skeptical of layers of interpretation. Not to say that there aren't those who have a pro-sovereignty viewpoint who are very well read on the subject, but one can safely say that they maintain their POV by dismissing a large body of history as propaganda. That being said, how do we proceed together? My challenge is that I want to go to a level of depth greater than perhaps others are willing to - for example, some may just want to cite PL103-150, and declare it as historical fact, when I want to illustrate very clearly that such interpretations do not represent the only POV or even the correct POV necessarily. I contradict many of the basic assumptions believed by other editors here, and by a host of pro-sovereignty sources. This kind of opposition definitely rubs people the wrong way, but I cannot be pono and remain silent. On your user page, you say you support an independent nation of Hawaii, and do not approve of the 1893 Hawaiian Revolution. Imagine your answers to a few of these questions: Did the 162 marines who landed from the U.S.S. Boston ever threaten the royalists? Did all of the nations with diplomatic ties to the Kingdom of Hawaii recognize the new Provisional Government? Was the population of the Kingdom of Hawaii majority native Hawaiian in 1893? Did Kamehameha III negotiate a treaty of annexation with the United States, but failed to sign it before he died? Was the Republic of Hawaii a legitimate nation from 1894-1898? Did any land change hands due to the overthrow of Liliuokalani? Did the native Hawaiian political parties who were anti-annexation support Statehood after annexation? Was it illegal to speak the Hawaiian language during either the Kingdom, Republic, Territory or Statehood period? Was the Hawaiian Flag taken down on the day of annexation, torn into shreds, and given to the people who helped overthrow the queen? I don't ask these questions to challenge your support for an independent nation of Hawaii, but to help you realize that depending on what one believes those answers are, one may have a rationally differing opinion. And so my arguments with the others often end up emotional - and my task is to try to bring the conversation around to verifiable citations, and NPOV language and presentation. I think together we can get over our disagreements (although there will always be new faces joining in who start things up again), and appreciate your help in maintaining tone and dealing with specific citations. As a haole who has come to our islands recently, and integrated into the life, land and culture, I hope you can imagine that the people of the 1800s, from John Young who helped Kamehameha unify the islands, to the missionaries who arrived in 1820 and spread Christianity with the blessing of Ka'ahumanu, to all the other immigrants to the islands during that time, up to and including folk like Lorrin Thurston, Sanford Dole and William Richards Castle who helped unite us with the United States, all had the same mana in their hearts as you have in yours. Although it may seem unbelievable to you, even Liliuokalani saw hope for her people being a part of the United States, and proudly flew the American flag over her home in 1917 to honor native Hawaiian-American sailors who fell in the Great War. If, as per Wikipedia, we assumed good faith about all of the people involved in the Hawaiian Revolution of 1893, I think the story is much richer, more realistic, and a greater honor to the human spirits they characterized. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 04:37, 14 May 2007 (UTC) Dr Blaisdell He seems a worthy subject for an article, but if you would like the article to remain you must write it in the WP style, which includes: listing college degrees with university and year -- and putting the university names in double brackets listing important awards, important memberships and offices held --a list is more readable than paragraphs listing books published as formal references style: Author, title, Publisher, year ISBN if possible. listing some major published papers, say how many total. Do not just link to Google, list the most prestigious papers. State the importance the journals are. Say how many other papers cited them. Use PubMed, not Google or Google Scholar. --Pub Med covers this field better. and, most important, giving some 3rd party sources. A website at a university etc. can be one, but it cannot be the only one. Book reviews are fine, or a newspaper stories. Print or web is OK, but not from a list or a blog. These is, very unfortunately, some prejudice against people from the academic world. If you do not do this right away, the article will probably be deleted in a day or two--though not by me. If you want to make your life easier, you can request permission to use WP:AWB for categorizing Hawaii-related articles and adding okina's automatically. Take a look, but you won't be able to run it without permission. Also, you may want to do some more work on WP:HAWAII to bring your mainspace contributions higher. If you have less than 500 mainspace edits, they probably won't approve you, and Portal work isn't part of mainspace. If you are looking for stuff to do (and want to increase your mainspace edit count) take a look at the articles in Category:Stub-Class Hawaii articles, Category:Start-Class Hawaii articles, and Category:B-Class Hawaii articles. The goal is to move those articles up a notch. Stub articles should be worked on to move them up to Start, Start articles should be improved to move them up to B, B articles should be moved up to Category:GA-Class Hawaii articles, until the goal of Category:FA-Class Hawaii articles is reached. Looking at current statistics, we have a lot of work to do, which is why we need to recruit more members. Anyway, make your way through those categories and you should be able to bring your mainspace edit count up so you will be approved for AWB. Category:Hawaii articles with comments will point you in the right direction. Chris 01:49, 29 August 2007 (UTC) Hawaiian diacritics Don't know if you've seen this, but as a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii, you might want to comment on the current proposal in the Wikiproject Hawaii MOS [3]; User:Erudy has posted a "modest proposal" to completely eliminate all diacritics from Hawaiian articles, except for a citation at the beginning. Right now there are only 4 comments, evenly split. As far as I can tell all of those supporting it haven't contributed to Hawaiian articles, so it would be disturbing if they claimed victory when hardly anyone who is actually from or connected to Hawaiʻi has put in their voice. See more here! --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:38, 8 November 2016 (UTC) New Challenge for Oceania and Australia Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest!
