Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

P.S. One last helpful hint. To sign your posts like I did above (on talk pages, for example) use the '~' symbol. To insert just your name, type ~~~ (3 tildes), or, to insert your name and timestamp, use ~~~~ (4 tildes).

Image copyright tag missing edit

Hello, we're working hard to add image copyright tags to every image so that the copyright status is not ambiguous. I'd appreciate it if you could add the appropriate copyright tag to these images:

Since you took the photo, you can release it under the GNU Free Document License by adding this information to the image description:

Speedy deletion nomination of Talk:ACORN random numbers edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Talk:ACORN random numbers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. I mistakenly changed the name of the talk page instead of the page itself and that (I think) is why they decided to delete it. A pity ! following my request, this deletion was reverted, and then tha page was deleted again - I decided not to insist. jw (talk) 20:30, 16 January 2020 (UTC) Reply

Is there a moderated mass update script with flag 'Y' , to correct language errors ? edit

looking for a script that will allow me to do a mass update but after reviewing each affected page. I don't have the time to go thru the proper verify, edit, preview, check, publish, but am willing to help if such a script exists.

The error is "went onto"+verb , which occured 1237 time a short while back, which ought usually to be "went on to" + verb . Most, but beware not all, should be changed: eg. "he went onto free horses" would depend on the exact context to interpet its meaning [sorry it's a rather contrived example]

jw (talk) 20:45, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

I use JWB for this purpose and make some custom regular expression substitutions. I'm not sure what sort of flag you are looking for, but JWB does not have a bot flag set for it, if that's what you mean. Though I don't think that really matters for this sort of task. -- Beland (talk) 22:52, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
Not a bot-flag but 'flag' would be for the human editor, after reviewing the context in each relevant page, to indicate Y (before the script updates that page)... too dangerous to mass update when there might probably be a small number of false positives. ... so looking for a sort of "moderated mass update" jw (talk) 14:35, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
JWB lets you review the changes one page at a time, and then makes the changes you've approved for that page immediately. However, all the changes are made for you, you only see the part of the page where changes have been made, and it's a single button press to approve or skip. You do have an opportunity to make manual changes as well. -- Beland (talk) 15:07, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am trying to use JWB but suspect that I need to be added to the list of approved users Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage.

@Beland: Can you approve me? I undertake to only use it for this one operation i.e. to fix went onto (at least until I find something else to fix :) ). In addition, I undertake to refer to you if/when I wish to do that.
@Beland: If you consider I don't have enough experience or that I am not sufficiently trustworthy for some other reason, then how can we find a trusty volunteer to do the task on our behalf? jw (talk) 20:10, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Oxford Ornithological Society moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Oxford Ornithological Society, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. creffett (talk) 23:11, 1 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Your draft article, Draft:Oxford Ornithological Society edit

Hello, Jwikip. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Oxford Ornithological Society".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion.
